MS Dhoni broke a million hearts across the globe when he announced his decision to step down as Team India's limited-overs captain, late on Wednesday. His decision has now paved the way for Virat Kohli to take over across all formats.

Eleven days before the first ODI against England, in Pune, Dhoni informed the BCCI that he decided to renounce his captaincy from both ODI and T20 formats. "Mahendra Singh Dhoni has informed the BCCI that he wishes to step down as the captain of the Indian cricket team for One-Day International and T20 International formats of the game," a press release from BCCI CEO Rahul Johri said.

Despite relinquishing his captaincy, the good news is that Dhoni will still be available for selection; something his fans will truly cherish. Also, freed from the responsibilities of leading a side, Dhoni will now be able to focus on his batting that has taken a toll over the past few years.

Following Dhoni's announcement, the cricket fraternity rallied behind their pragmatic leader to pay tribute to his accomplishments as the Indian captain. Amongst fans, teammates and former cricketers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also paid a tribute to Dhoni with a unique video.

During his nine-year stint as India's captain, Dhoni boasts of an impeccable record with 110 ODI wins and 74 losses. Having won the 2007 World T20, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy, Dhoni became the first-ever captain to will all major ICC tournaments.
