iPhone 8 Plus Production Halted Due To Discovery Of Unauthorized Components

The second largest iPhone 8 Plus manufacturer in the world, Wistron, has been accused of using unauthorized parts in its production process. As a result, the device production might've been halted for two weeks.

Taiwan's Chinese-language Commercial Times reported on Thursday that Apple ordered Wistron to halt production of iPhone 8 Plus handsets at its plant in Kunshan, China for two weeks pending a probe into alleged use of water-proof components from a supplier not certified by Apple. Wistron penalized several high-level executives in an attempt to regain Apple's trust, according to the report.

The components in question concern waterproofing the device, a report said, and they came from a supplier that Apple has not certified.

Wistron has issued a partial denial stating, that the company will not comment on matters concerning specific clients and there was not a “two-week production suspension as reported and operations remain completely normal.”

The statement as reported does not deny that it was found using fake components, and leaves open the possibility that production was halted for a shorter period.Following Wistron's disclosures to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, Wistron shares dropped by more than 5 percent in early trading but soon recovered.

Wistron provides Apple with a smaller portion of iPhone 8 Plus models compared to rival supplier Foxconn, which makes up to 80 percent of the handsets, although Wistron has recently emerged as Apple's principal iPhone manufacturer in India.

Should iPhone 8 Plus buyers be worried? We don't think so. Firstly it is expected that the affected inventory that still hasn't been dispatched to retail has been called back and quarantined. Secondly, Apple has always maintained strict quality control measures on all its products that are manufactured off-shore by partners, this is probably how the issue was discovered in the first place. And lastly, there hasn't been any reported incident of an iPhone 8 Plus having faulty resistance.
