A customer of Airtel India created a furore over social media after asking for a Hindu customer representative, as she didn't trust the Muslim representative assigned to solve her query. The entire episode unfolded on Twitter as Pooja Singh, a direct-to-home (DTH) customer of Airtel wasn't happy with the service engineer assigned to her by the company.
When the customer care executive named Shoaib responded on Twitter to Pooja's displeasure over the service by the company's engineer, Pooja asked Airtel to assign a different (read Hindu ) representative as she had “no faith in his working ethics”. Here's the entire Twitter conversation that sparked a war of words on social media:
@airtelindia pathetic Airtel DTH customer service.I raised complaint for reinstallation of DHT.but assigned service engineer miss behaved with me. His words are "Tum Phone Rakho Dobara call mt krna " his number is+91 79-85195094. This is how Airtel is looting it's customer.

— Bharti Airtel India (@Airtel_Presence) June 18, 2018Dear Shohaib, as you're a Muslim and I have no faith in your working ethics because Kuran may have different version for customer service, thus requesting you to assign a Hindu representative for my request. Thanks

As outrage from Twitter spilled over to mainstream news media, Airtel clarified their stance on the entire issue with this statement.
Dear Pooja, at Airtel, we absolutely do not differentiate between customers, employees and partners on the basis of caste or religion. We would urge you to do the same. Both Shoaib and Gaganjot are part of our customer resolution team. (cont) https://t.co/lbwhRE95vm
— Bharti Airtel India (@Airtel_Presence) June 18, 2018It must be noted that Pooja Singh is followed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Tajinder Bagga and has received a lot of support for her bigoted comments.
Recently, a similar case involving the cab-sharing app Ola had caused a major storm on social media as well. The case pertained to a customer who complained to Ola cabs for providing a Muslim driver.
While such stray incidents do not bode well for India as a nation, what's even more worrying is the kind of support these communal elements receive on social media.
