Janhvi & Ishaan's 'Dhadak' Is Watchable, But Fails To Recreate The Magic Of 'Sairat'

First love always holds a special, bittersweet place in our hearts. We fight, we break-up, we make-up, we turn the world upside down for that one person. Well, pehla pyaar and its nasha linger on for a very long time.

This particular, heady feeling of young love was captured and shown beautifully in Nagraj Manjule's Marathi superhit 'Sairat'.

The movie was everything that defines the untouched reality of young love and its battles, with utmost sincerity. Archi and Parshya's story was ordinary and that's exactly what made it extraordinary.

Manjule talked about caste and discrimination and did not make any attempts to hide the ugly truth of loving someone whom you are not 'supposed to', as honour killing formed the main premise of the story.

And now, here comes 'Dhadak', the official Hindi remake of the film. When a remake happens, comparisons are bound to be made.

If you are going to watch 'Dhadak' carrying in the expectations of 'Sairat', then let me stop you right there. Sairat wasn't just a film, it was a display of raw emotions and 'Dhadak' doesn't even come close to the true spirit of it.

The movie refreshingly isn't your typical Bollywood love saga, but at the same time also doesn't hit you as hard as 'Sairat' did. Maybe that was how they wanted the film to be.

Maybe that is the reason everything in the movie looks so glorified. From the on-point costume, dazzling makeup, to the dance sequences, everything simply screams that it is a Karan Johar movie, and that's where the reality and rawness go missing.

As I listen to 'Sairat Zhala Ji' and 'Zingaat', I can't miss the factor of how REAL it was. It was a story that defined true people.

Remember the opening scene? Where Parshya was dreaming and Archi sneaks into his room? She was beautiful and not your Vogue beautiful. She wasn't anything like our Bollywood divas but in his eyes, she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. But why didn't I feel the same emotion, same depth when Janhvi and Ishaan re-enacted that scene?

Throughout the film, Janhvi's perfectly kohled eyes fail to express what the fate of the story is. But Archi, in 'Sairat', didn't need anything artificial to express those unsaid words.

This time, the story is set in Udaipur. Parthavi (Janhvi Kapoor) and Madhu (Ishaan Khatter) fall madly in love with each other, however, the young lovers are clueless that the fate of their love isn't that simple.

Janhvi stays true to her character, and I really liked her in the beautiful dance sequences, because of the happy expression that floods throughout her face when she moves.

Ishaan, as expected, is excellent. He is a talented actor who overwhelms you with his sheer acting skills.

Ashutosh Rana (Parthavi's father) is a cruel and ruthless politician and loving his daughter has consequences. He sends Madhu to jail and even locks up his daughter inside the house. Cliche but okay, we can live with it.

Just like any love story, there is drama, struggle, and beautiful moments building the plot. But the perfect-looking world of Johar fails to fall in sync with Manjule's world. Kjo's world is pleasing to the eye for sure, but not to the soul.

The climax of the movie is something that takes you to a new high. Well, of course, because you just don't expect it to happen. If you still haven't seen 'Sairat', the climax might have an impact on you. But if you have, then you are in for a major disappointment. So maybe you can give this a skip, or just watch it once to get it out of the way.

To sum it up, Janhvi and Ishaan stand out in their performances and that's a pretty good start to their blossoming careers in Bollywood. You will surely enjoy the movie if you haven't seen 'Sairat'.

All said and done, 'Sairat' triumphed spectacularly because it remained true till the end, and that's where 'Dhadak' failed!
