Twitter Up In Arms As Mohamed Salah Pips Cristiano Ronaldo To FIFA Puskas Award

Ever since joining the Reds from Roma in 2017, Mohamed Salah has become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp's rampant Liverpool brigade.

Arriving at the Anfield for 50 million euros, the Egyptian footballer justified his price tag with a sensational run last season. With 30 goals to his name, Salah was awarded the Golden Boot and was eventually named PFA Players' Player of the Year in the 2017/18 season.

Thanks to his dribbling skills, speed and ball control, Salah raked in goal after goal and played a crucial role in propelling Liverpool to the Champions League final last year. Thus, there was no surprise to see him being shortlisted in the final list of three footballers, who were competing for FIFA's Player of the Year award this year.

But, during the glitzy FIFA ceremony in London, Salah missed out on the prestigious honour as Croatia's Luka Modric edged past Ronaldo and the Liverpool talisman to clinch the award. After suffering a heartbreak, Salah did find some consolation in the FIFA Puskas award that was handed to him for his goal against Everton last season.

    ICYMI, @MoSalah is a #Puskás award winner! #FIFAFootballAwards

Salah's strike in the Merseyside derby, where he weaved through multiple Everton defenders before curling the ball into the top corner, was deemed as the most aesthetically pleasing goal in the world of football over the previous year. Thus, the Egyptian's effort was adjudged the best in the category.

Apart from Salah's goal, Gareth Bale's overhead kick against Liverpool in the 2017/18 Champions League final was also a contender for the award, along with Cristiano Ronaldo's similar acrobatic effort against his, now current, club Juventus in the same tournament. But, Salah managed to pip both Bale and Ronaldo for the top prize.

While Salah might have bagged the Puskas award, football fans didn't think his goal was worthy of the award. The fans believed that Ronaldo's effort was more deserving of the Puskas award than Salah's.

While some called it the biggest injustice in football since Michael Owen's Ballon d'Or win in 2001, others were simply baffled by FIFA's choice to hand the award to Salah.

Someone tell how did Salah win the #Puskás award over this ð¤pic.twitter.com/qD2ktQXTYb

Not a big fan Ronaldo, however, that bicycle goal was 10 time better than Salah's #Puskas award goal, I even think Benjamin Pavard's volley goal Vs Argentina in the FIFA WC was even more impressive. These awards are nothing more than a clown act!

    This is a daylight robbery,when Bale's splendid goal didn't even get shortlisted,i knew something was fishy.This is a mockery & a joke.

It's decided by fan votes. The whole of Egypt probably voted for him

Ronaldo vs Juve, Bale vs Liverpool, Quaresma vs Iran, Pavard vs Argentina, Cheryshev vs Croatia, Dzeko vs Chelsea, Riley McGree's scoprion kick goal, and on and on before this average strike.

Messi and Robben can score that goal with their eyes closed and with oversized boots#Puskás

Salah winning the Puskás award - biggest injustice since Michael Owen winning the Ballon d'Or.
