Sikh Community At Daggers Drawn Over SRK's 'Zero' After Poster Hurts Religious Sentiments

India is a land that harbours many beliefs and welcomes people of different faiths to coexist with one another. Our nation's integrity lies in the possibility of being able to exist and flourish to our full potential, without hurting fellow citizens through our speech or actions.

Yet, even as we earlier received news of protests against the release of the upcoming movie 'Kedarnath', it seems like Shah Rukh Khan's 'Zero' has also invited the wrath of a religious community.

A legal complaint has been made against SRK and film director Anand L. Rai for hurting religious sentiments of the Sikh community.

The story about a vertically challenged individual's celebration of life doesn't seem to have pleased the Sikhs. The complaint which was filed by the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) General Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Monday, alleged that the poster and the promo display the religious article 'kirpan' as an ordinary dagger.

Sirsa later took to Twitter to share his concerns with the rest of the world, after filing a complaint with SHO North Avenue, New Delhi. He even attached a copy of the complaint along with his tweet. Read the complaint here:

I have written a letter to actor of @Zero21Dec @iamsrk & director @aanandlrai to withdraw the objectionable scene and poster showing Kirpaan as ordinary dagger

The Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif starrer is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, mostly because it happens to be SRK's only release this year.

However, with the string of issues being raised by the Sikh community claiming that the depiction of the kirpan in the teaser is objectionable, the complaint also seeks that the scene in the promo is removed.

It is believed that according to the Sikh Rehat Maryada only an Amritdhari Sikh person can wear the Gatra Kirpan, but the film distorts this fact, thereby hurting the community's religious sentiments.

Given the charges and the result sought in the complaint, it seems likely that the makers will have to chop certain sections from the movie.

We hope that doesn't come to pass and that the members of the Sikh community and the makers of the film reach an amicable middle ground. Until then let's see how SRK and Anand L. Rai respond to the complaint.
