Last week, I showed that the perception of Virat Kohli as a great finisher as opposed to that of Tendulkar as a great batsman but an ordinary finisher, was an illusion. The difference in their records was an artifact of what batsmen at the other end were producing. Since then, he has scored a fine 82 not out to lead India’s run chase against Australia at Mohali on Sunday. The end game in India’s chase developed more or less as Kohli (and every experienced limited overs batsman since the 1970s who has found themselves in a similar position) must have imagined it - a stiff asking rate for a small number of overs. Just how stiff was the required rate over the last 5 overs…

Andy goes on holiday but that doesn’t stop him talking about Virat, or the Afghans great win against West Indies. Jarrod says goodbye to some teams.

Mohammad Shahzad is facing completely the wrong direction, later he’s on one leg, at another time he’s slicing the ball like a roadside salami salesman. If someone showed Shahzad the textbook, he’d lean back and hoick it as hard as he could. Sometimes for six, sometimes straight up in the air. For the 2015 World Cup there was a Shahzad shaped hole in Afghanistan’s team. And it is a sizable hole. Shahzad is more large Big Mac meal than the kale and quinoa salads of most pro cricketers. That was ultimately the reason he didn’t make that tournament. But in his case, size doesn’t matter. Of course he bends over to take deep strained breaths 15 balls…

Second ball George Munsey tried to reverse sweep. Third ball as well. The fourth ball he smashed a reverse sweep. The fifth ball as well. Scotland were chasing 147. Scotland were trying to make some noise. The last ball of the first over Munsey came down the wicket. He looked lost the minute he left his crease. Whatever shot he had in his mind, whatever fantasy of destruction was playing, out on the field there was a confused batsman, way out of his crease, trying to invent a shot that would save him. It didn’t. For Scotland, nothing ever saves them. Twenty games. That is how many times Scotland have lined up in a major ICC tournament. One has been washed out. 19 have …

My first helmet was white. I did not want a helmet. I did not see the need. But I was told I had to have one. I said fine, but I will only wear it if it was white. Martin Crowe wore a white helmet. In 1992, as a 12 year old captain, I opened the bowling with a spinner. There was no need. There was no overlying tactics I thought could work, I just did it. Martin Crowe opened with a spinner. I started wearing a thigh pad. I didn’t really need to, but I wanted to. I had to find the right one. It had to look a certain way on my thigh. It had to look large, and square, and like a knight going into battle. Godlike. Martin Crowe had a thigh pad like that. Al…

Here is the full version my post which appeared on Cordon on January 8, 2016. Cordon's editor reviews posts and makes sure that they adhere to Cricinfo's style guide and other standards and even preferences. The title and the one sentence summary which appears on top of the piece are provided by the editorial staff. This is not a whim on the publication's part. The way titles are composed follows an easily discernible pattern. I've found that the editor's work improves pieces and sharpens them. In this case, I think it will be useful to present the full post, which is longer (too long to fit Cordon's standard expectation) and in which I've attempted to use rhetorical d…

In recent years, I’ve been struck by a strange feature of the way cricket is discussed. On the one hand, the discussion of tactics, technique and the playing conditions is more sophisticated than ever before. On the other, the discussion of umpiring is less nuanced than ever before. It is as if there is an emerging consensus in cricket that the game is complicated, but refereeing it is not, and decisions made by umpires would be self-evident to anybody else who might fill their shoes. Why might this be? The simplest explanation is that umpires are rarely present in commentary boxes or on the sports pages to explain what they do, while former players, captains and coaches …

Ben Stokes was given out Obstructing the Field under Law 37 in the 2nd One Day International at Lord’s on September 5, 2015. The decision caused great controversy and made headlines. Some reports even suggested that Australia’s win had been “overshadowed” by “drama” or “controversy”. In fact, there is no controversy. The law is clear, as are the amendments to the law and guidance provided by the ICC’s cricket committee about how the law should be interpreted. Disagreement in this instance exists only because some people don’t know the law. The decision against Stokes was governed by 2 sets of laws. Law 37 defines “Obstructing the field” as a mode of dismissal. And 2.4 o…

Sam Collins and Jarrod Kimber’s Death Of A Gentleman (henceforth Death) is, in their own words, a story “about people, about power, about greed, and about the endless pursuit of more.” What started out as a story about Test Cricket became, in the process of its making, a story about the (mal)administration of the game. There is much in the story that will aggravate you if you are a nouveau riche admirer of the paradoxically nationalistic de-nationalization of the game via the IPL and its many imitators. I watched the film as an unabashed supporter of the view that the point of the ICC is twofold. First, to run the game so that there are more competitive teams playing Tes…

Over the weekend, I read Sachin Tendulkar's autobiography, ghost written by Prof. Boria Majumdar and published by the British publishing house Hodder & Stoughton. Before discussing the book, I ought to make my standpoint clear. I have had no interest in his personal life off the field. His cricket held my interest endlessly. I have watched Tendulkar play a million different innings. I have watched him use different techniques for different bowlers in the same innings. I have watched him bowl off-breaks to lefties and leg-breaks to righties, turn every ball hard and land nearly every ball perfectly. I've watched him bowl seam-up and clip the top of off-stump. I've watc…

Osman Samiuddin's The Unquiet Ones: A History of Pakistan Cricket is a remarkable book about arguably the world's most confounding sporting culture. It is a chronological story, built episodically. The word 'unquiet' appears twice in the prologue, and never in the text itself. This is a pity, for rarely has a book about cricket been so wonderfully titled. What follows is a hopefully unquiet, but (perhaps mercifully for some of you) brief encounter with the book. An unquiet exists when there are unrelenting, structural causes of friction. It exists when an amateur administration attempts to govern sportsmen whose skills are worthy of the most talented full-time profession…

Kevin Pietersen has written a startling autobiography. So startling that it has taken the English cricketing and journalistic establishment by surprise. It is a catalogue of leaks, intrigues, triumphs and disappointments which accompanied the brightest batting talent in contemporary cricket on his way to becoming England's greatest international run scorer. Such is the specificity and relentless ferocity of Pietersen's critical gaze, that were it not without regular glimpses into his vulnerabilities and his willingness to admit error, the book would read like an ethnographic account of the life of a cricketer in the early 21st century, and not just an autobiography. It c…

BBC Four features Storyville, a collection of international documentaries (i take these to mean stories from outside the UK). It is an inherently liberal idea. Britain's public broadcaster has a budget and space on its schedule for independently made documentaries which might broaden the horizons of the British public. In our globalized world, there are additional alliances such as the one the BBC has with NDTV for this film. This post is a review of the film, which I have now watched a couple of times on Youtube. It is also an account of some fierce reactions to the existence of the film from the Government and from the public. I hope, that in this, you will read about w…

Pakistan were outclassed with both bat and ball by Australia at the Adelaide Oval in their World Cup Quarter Final. Their batsmen felt pressured into several high risk strokes just to keep the scoring rate between four and five runs per over. A couple of the early batsmen were out caught in the slip cordon playing away from the body without moving their feet. Haris Sohail fell to Mitchell Johnson's two-card trick after being well set. Johnson came around the wicket to Sohail and tested him with the short ball. He then followed this up with the full-wide 'sucker' ball which Sohail chased without too much footwork and was caught at the wicket. When Australia batted, apart…

I have posted infrequently during the 2015 World Cup. Time constraints have meant that I've felt it is better to write fewer, longer posts, than to review individual games. This post is intended as a guide to watching ODI cricket. What should you look for? What might tell you how a contest is going, and what teams are trying to do? What might tell you what limitations teams have? It is in three parts. First, I discuss the effect of field restrictions. Second, I discuss the Sri Lanka v South Africa matchup at length, and Third, I rate the prospects of each side to win the World Cup. The first part is intended to give you some idea of how i see the 50 over contest, the sec…

Whenever a team underperforms in a big tournament, a master narrative of the reasons for failure follows. In England’s case, it is clear. It runs along two axes. First, England’s team management relied excessively on ‘analytics’ to run tactics, selection and strategy. Second, England’s brand of ODI cricket lags one cricketing generation behind today’s top teams. This reference is to England’s batting. Here is a list of number pairs. The first number is a batsman’s average and the second is strike rate per 100 deliveries in the 2015 World Cup for matches involving only teams which have won at least 2 games. I am writing on the eve of England’s final game. (50.25, 84.8) (3…

The first fortnight of the world cup showcased a new style of One Day Cricket. The storylines is of 300 being a 'par' score, of teams attacking endlessly are variously true. The central story of this World Cup has been the quality of the wickets. A top quality wicket can produce a high quality 50 over game. The wickets, especially in Australia, but increasingly also in New Zealand, have been superb. What is a top quality wicket? A top quality wicket is one on which a good line and length is possible. A good line and length is one which the batsman has to defend if he cares about getting out. Too many wickets in India allow batsmen to take liberties all too easily with li…

India faced South Africa in Melbourne in the biggest game of their Group in the 2015 World Cup on February 22, 2015. The game was made for India. Between the burgeoning diaspora and the new wealth at the upper end of India's wealth distribution, nearly 70,000 of the 86,000 spectators at the MCG wore blue. The game was schedule to begin at 9 am on Sunday morning in India. The drop-in pitch at the MCG, like the one at Sydney and Adelaide, was likely to be a conventional ODI pitch. The extra bounce generally seen in Australia would be there, but the spice of Perth or Brisbane from the tri-series would be missing. Its one thing to try and survive on a spicy pitch, its another…

The last play of Australia's World Cup opener at the MCG ended that contest prematurely because Umpires Dharmasena and Dar got a decision plainly wrong. Here is what happened. Umpire Dar upheld an LBW appeal by Josh Hazlewood against James Taylor. As the ball trickled towards cover point, Taylor and his partner James Anderson set off for a quick single. Even though Umpire Dar gave the batsman Out, James Anderson who was running away from Umpire Dar headed to the batting end. Glenn Maxwell threw the stumps down from cover point with Anderson short of his crease. James Taylor decided to review the LBW decision and this was reversed upon review. Even though Taylor was rule…

"This is completely unfair!" exclaimed Shaun Pollock in the commentary box. Abraham Benjamin de Villiers had just directed a yorker on off stump past short third man to the boundary. Alongside Pollock was the eagle-eyed Ian Bishop. He was at a loss for words. The other 5 balls in that over went for 4 sixers and a couple. AB de Villiers came to the wicket at number 3 with 69 legal deliveries left in the South African innings at Wanderers. At the other end was Hashim Amla, batting 115. South Africa's other opener had just been dismissed with a century to his name. Eleven overs and one ball later, de Villiers walked back to the pavilion having faced 44 balls of the 67 deliv…
