It has not even been one full day since Virat Kohli announced his resignation as the captain of the Indian Test cricket team and speculations behind his major decision have already spread in the air with thousands of his fans feeling as if he was forced into calling it quits on his leadership, specifically by the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.

    β€” Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) January 15, 2022
A day after India lost the three-match Test series to South Africa, Kohli shared a message through his social media handles in which he said that he will be giving up all the roles and responsibilities that came with the title of being the team captain and focus purely on becoming the greatest version of the batter he can.
As soon as the news hit the internet, his followers targeted the boss-men at the Indian cricket board and started speculating and criticising them for coercing Kohli into taking such a big step despite his phenomenal winning record as the skipper in the longest format of the game.

Shame on you jay shah & Ganguly
    I'm proud of you @imVkohli pic.twitter.com/p8pYsWy2nP

β€” UNTOLD (@h_ar_ish) January 15, 2022This petty and dirty politics by Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah has ended a great captaincy career, Virat Kohli doesn't deserve such treatment. Internal politics of BCCI has wounded Indian Cricket terribly.
β€” Sohom (@AwaaraHoon) January 15, 2022Jay Shah, Ganguly and other politicians at #BCCI to Indian cricket fans after their shocking mismanagement which led to Virat Kohli - greatest test captain India ever had stepping down!#ViratKohli pic.twitter.com/rLMvkwfpme
β€” Vishal Verma (@VishalVerma_9) January 15, 2022Things took a turn for the worse when Shah failed to read the room that Twitter had become and felt the need to reply to Kohli’s resignation with a positive and jolly generic message that was probably handed over to him by one of his minions.
Congratulations to @imVkohli on a tremendous tenure as #TeamIndia captain. Virat turned the team into a ruthless fit unit that performed admirably both in India and away. The Test wins in Australia & England have been special. https://t.co/9Usle3MbbQ
    β€” Jay Shah (@JayShah) January 15, 2022
The message opened the doors to Kohli fans to directly start writing into Shah’s Twitter feed and letting him know how he and his boss, Ganguly managed to β€œdestroy Indian cricket all by yourself”.
Thnx @JayShah and @SGanguly99 for degrading Indian cricket. You have successfully taken Indian cricket to dirty politics level.
β€” Nikhil pandey (@pandeynikhilraj) January 15, 2022You are the villain of this story
β€” Rebel (@Rebeladam45) January 15, 2022Congratulations @BCCI for successfully mixing politics with cricket and ruining it completely. @JayShah special congratulations to you. Jab baap aisa h to beta kaisa hoga. This is for you pic.twitter.com/bsQqjUHFIy
    β€” Aamir Meraj (@AamirMeraj2308) January 15, 2022Congratulations ghochu, u made bcci a complete mess
β€” RAVIKANT (@kumarravikant21) January 15, 2022Things between Virat Kohli and the BCCI authorities have been sour for a while now. Before leaving for South Africa, Kohli had dropped a bombshell on Ganguly during a virtual press conference where he directly contradicted the BCCI president and said that he had shown no signs of opposition towards the idea of Kohli stepping down as the T20I captain back in September.
Ever since then, Ganguly has also expressed his issues with the recently resigned Indian skipper and despite trying his best to control his temper in public, has taken a few shots at Kohli. For instance, in December 2021, Dada said that he liked Kohli’s attitude but the problem was that the ace batter β€œfights a lot”.

On the other hand, the Indian batting legend, Sunil Gavaskar said that even Kohli knew that his time as the leader of the red-ball squad was coming to an end and that the BCCI would have fired him upon his journey back home had he decided not to announce his resignation first.

After Virat Kohli decided to give up his role as the captain of Team India in Test cricket, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar and middle-order batter Suresh Raina have recommended Rishabh Pant as his replacement instead of names like Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.

While in a conversation with India Today, Gavaskar suggested that the Indian cricket board and the selection committee must consider Pant as Kohli’s successor based on the fact that he is an automatic pick across all three formats of the game and the work he did as the leader of the IPL squad Delhi Capitals last season was phenomenal considering all things.
However, the most important reason that the Little Master gave behind making Pant his top choice is that he wants to see how the southpaw may rise to the occasion when asked to shoulder the responsibility of an entire nation in the purest format of the game that exists in today’s world.Β
Sunny Gavaskar tells me on @IndiaToday : "if it were up to me, I would make Rishabh Pant the next test captain"
    β€” Nikhil Naz (@NikhilNaz) January 15, 2022
Citing the example of the time when Ricky Ponting resigned as the Mumbai Indians captain and the onus went on Rohit Sharma’s head and how the β€˜Hitman’ has evolved his game ever since Gavaskar feels a similar experiment with Pant may also unlock something special within the Roorkee-born.
It is a highly unlikely scenario in which the team selectors would overlook players who are a lot more senior than Pant and have experience in the seat of a leader like Sharma and KL Rahul. Nonetheless, it seems as if Gavaskar’s wildcard pick began to gain a lot of attention on the internet with even Suresh Raina backing up Pant as the top choice.
Very good idea @NikhilNaz bhai ! He will be good captain agree with sunny bhai
    β€” Suresh Raina (@ImRaina) January 15, 2022
However, not everyone in the comments section was as optimistic about Pant’s ability to lead a team from the front, especially in the longest format of the game. Most fans felt like although Pant is a great player and has already achieved a lot of great things at such an early age, it is still not the time for him to be given the steering wheel to the massive wagon that the Indian cricket team is.
    Gavaskar sathiya gya h
har match ke baad isake statement badalate rahate h
abhi pant 100 kiya h isliye bol raha
agar 2-3 match haar gya ya flop gaya yahi gavaskar usake against statement dega
β€” (@_Btech_) January 15, 2022That's the mentality of one of Indian Greatest player he's suggesting the player with no temperament to be Captain of Indian side. Kl Rahul is my opinion is a good choice he's sensible and have a long career ahead
β€” Hamza khan (@HamzakhanWrites) January 15, 2022But he needs to first cement his place in the team. He is too volatile a player, he has to learn first to value his wicket and play consistently. Maybe in shorter version he can be appointed instead of Rohit and then move him to Test gradually.
β€” Nilesh Pandit (@nileshp1981) January 15, 2022Rohit and KL as Captain and VC respectively and Pant can be groomed as the next captain imo , he has a lot of potential

Sunil Gavaskar has expressed that Virat Kohli was on the verge of getting fired by the BCCI had he decided not to resign as the captain of the Indian Test cricket team after taking a 2-1 loss against South Africa in January 2022.
    View this post on Instagram
While on a video conference with India Today, Gavaskar did not take long to speculate that the Indian cricket board were already on their way to take away Kohli’s position as the leader of the red-ball squad because the board officials are unlikely to forget overseas losses.Β Β
The fact that the South African team was without some of its biggest players and the Men in Blue were expected to return home with a series win also didn’t help make Kohli’s case any stronger.

The Little Master said that regardless of how good a captain performs in such a series, if the final result of a series which was presumed to be one-sided and in favour of the tourists goes against the expectations, it is the skipper’s head that is the most likely to end up on a spike.Β
When asked if Gavaskar thought if Kohli’s personal struggles with the bat and the over-the-top drama that he had created while yelling into the stump mics and blaming the broadcasters for manipulating the HawkEye technology, the former skipper disagreed and doubled down on his theory that the sole reason behind Kohli’s departure from captaincy was because of the utterly shameful defeat that the Men in Blue had to incur against such a short-handed Protea side.

β€” Xolani (@ThatXolani) January 13, 2022 The legendary batter also feels that the removal of Kohli as the captain might be the beginning of a much-needed transitional phase within the Indian cricket team and that the fans might also see some of the most common names not make into the Playing XI anymore.Β
With the next red-ball series scheduled to take place at home against a touring Sri Lankan roster, it would be interesting to see who among the current squad will be replaced and by whom. On the basis of the series in South Africa, it may be time for Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane to say goodbye to their spots in the team.

On Saturday, Virat Kohli informed the cricketing world of his decision to resign from the position of the Indian Test cricket captain as he wrote down his thanks and shared it from his various social media platforms. While some of the people expressed shock and surprise, those were witnessed the kind of struggle Kohli was going through both as a captain and as a player knew that this was something that was on the horizon.
The 2-1 series defeat against a limping and struggling South African team was the final nail in the coffin for Kohli’s tenure as the leader of the red-ball squad for India and as difficult it would be to bid adieu to his captaincy, there was a general sense of acceptance when it came to his decision and everyone welcomed it with open arms.

This wasn’t because people were hoping to get rid of him as the face of the team (other than some highly toxic and blindly hating β€œfans”) but to see the man succeed at what he was destined to be - become the greatest batter in the history of the game.
One of the saddest people in the Indian cricket fraternity who expressed his sorrow publicly was Kohli’s former head coach, Ravi Shastri, who wrote a heartfelt message for the 33-year old while reminiscing all the incredible times they both had and the way they built the offensive juggernaut that the Indian Test cricket team has become over time.
Virat, you can go with your head held high. Few have achieved what you have as captain. Definitely India's most aggressive and successful. Sad day for me personally as this is the team we built together - @imVkohli pic.twitter.com/lQC3LvekOf

Sad day for me personally as this is the team we built together - @imVkohli,” Shastri wrote on Twitter while sharing a friendly picture with the former skipper.
Looking at the former head coach’s unfiltered and absolutely from-the-heart comments on the internet, fans flocked to his Twitter handle and congratulated Shastri for having such a successful by with Kohli by his side in the longest format of the game:
The legacy of yours as a 'Head Coach and Virat Kohli as a "Test Captain" will be remembered forever not just in Indian Cricketing history but in World Cricket.

    We will miss this combination.

β€” Ravi Bhai chepal best Friend (@Ravi_beer_69) January 15, 2022Kohli and Shastri have been working together in Test cricket since 2015 when Kohli was named full-time skipper of the longest format. Shastri was serving as Team Director at the time. India defeated the then-world number one Test team South Africa 3-0 at home after winning an away series in Sri Lanka.
Shastri's term as Team Director came to an end after that, but Kohli's fantasy run as captain in Test cricket continued with sweeping home series victories against New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, and Australia.

In July 2017, Shatri was rehired as the team's head coach. He and Kohli then paired together to keep the winning streak going at home, as well as winning two historic Test series in Australia.
