As Indians we take our movies extremely seriously. For many it’s an almost religious experience, with the reverence and fanfare given to it.
Over the course of its existence, Bollywood has always had actors who’ve been its representatives at any given point. We had The Kapoors who dominated industry for a while, before the rise of the Khans with Salman, Aamir, Saif and Shahrukh from the 90s till most early 2000s. They were the heartbeat of the nation delivering hits after hit. What’s more impressive is that despite their flops, the audience always thronged back to cinema halls if a movie bearing the Khan name was released.Β
However, since 2010, there has been a slow, but steady rise of erstwhile talented actors who’ve consistently showcased range and talent even if the film wasn’t always commercially successful. These actors have quietly built quite the reputation.Β
Since the reign and monopoly of the Khans is long over, let’s take a look at the actors who’ve made a name for themselves as the present day kings of this film industry.
Ayushmann KhurranaAyushmann Khurrana is charming, congenial, and a bloody good actor. He has a knack for picking films that discuss an array of issues relevant to his audience. From premature balding in men with Bala or unexpectedly late parenthood in Badhaai Ho, to tackling the tricky topic of casteism in Article 15, Ayushmann has come a long way from his debut, Vicky Donor.Β

Vicky Kaushalβ€œYeh Dukh Kaahe Khatam Nahi Hota?” Vicky’s heartfelt lament from Masaan tugged at the audience’s heartstrings. Vicky was the metaphorical dark horse that not many bet on. Their misfortune, as he’s gone on to make a stellar career for himself with Sanju, Zubaan, Raman Raghav 2.0, and Uri: The Surgical Strike.Β

Rajkummar RaoA worthy successor to King Khan’s throne, Rajkummar Rao’s versatility is his greatest strength. He played the supporting character in Kai Po Che, the toxic ex in Queen, an idealistic civil servant in Newton, and a stranded man in Trapped. His range of roles are underrated and he’s only going to get bigger with each release.Β Β

Vikrant MasseyThe unassuming Vikrant Massey snuck up on us with memorable performances in Chhapaak, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Haseen Dillruba and A Death In The Gunj. What makes him stand out is his ability to lose himself in the roles he plays.Β

Ranveer SinghHow could we have a list of actors who are the face of modern day Bollywood without the superstar himself. Ranveer has managed to forge a niche for himself in this industry. However, his maverick sense of style and remarkable acting prowess have turned that niche into the mainstream, with the audience swooned by every move he makes. He’s another actor who’s able to mould himself for the character. He’s as comfortable with top-notch action flicks like Simba as he’s with grounded and gritty films like Gully Boy. His ability to take on over the top characters in Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Goliyon Ke Raasleela Ram-Leela, and make them palatable for the junta makes him the current top dog.Β

Bollywood will always have a few faces dominating the industry. And it’s this circle of life that keeps it competitive and gives it its edge.Β

Let's get one thing out of the way. I think most of us have been in a place where we really liked this one girl but could not end up being with her because she chose to be with someone else.

That sh** really hurts. Now imagine going through that experience again and again for years at a stretch. Too horrific, right?

Well, that's how life is in the cinematic universe of Bollywood for actor Jimmy Shergill.

Be it Diana Penty, Preity Zinta, or even Kangana Ranaut, we're familiar with the good-looking actor always losing out on the girl in the movies to the other guy. Now, while we all feel sorry for Jimmy in the movies, here is how he actually ended up proving that not getting the girl did not actually mean that he was a loser in any sense.

As if losing someone you liked was not hard enough, losing her to someone like Uday Chopra must be excruciating. Well, in all fairness, Jimmy Shergill took all of it like a true champ.

In the 2002 film Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Jimmy's character Rohit is set to marry Anjali (Tulip Joshi), but Sanjay (Uday) said to be the hero of the film, does everything in his power to belittle Rohit in front of Anjali, to an extent of even falsely framing him in front of Anjali's parents. And despite knowing all of this, Anjali confesses that she still is in love with Sanjay, leaving Jimmy's character heartbroken.
However, instead of taking it onto his ego, Rohit decides to take the high road and makes sure that Anjali and Sanjay end up together. It must have been heartwrenching but Jimmy's character showed maturity and a sense of security about himself by deciding that he should not be with someone who does not love him. We might have been too young when we watched the movie, but it sure did have an important lesson that we should take.

Okay. First off, Jimmy's character in this movie has to compete for Preity Zinta's love with Bollywood's heartthrob Arjun Rampal. And, he has to do all of this while carrying a weird puppet in his hands everywhere.

This clearly is not the best way to woo a girl. However, Jimmy's character Sameer does what any good guy would do. Does anything in his power show how madly he is in love with Preity's character Shalu. However, loads of complicated love triangles lead to Shalu pretending to be in a romantic relationship with Sameer, only to friendzone him at the end and marry Rampal instead.
It does not let Sameer down, and he ends up supporting her in her decision because that's what an actual good guy does. He clearly knew that he'd be a happier man with a puppet rather than getting into all of those complications. Hopefully, Jimmy's character became a master puppeteer and steered off such toxic friendships.

Let's get one thing straight. Despite us liking the Tanu Weds Manu series, Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut were actually very indecisive people.

In the second film, Maddy's character actually went to the extent of marrying Kangana's clone, only to ditch her right at the end to marry Kangana-1 instead.
While all of that was going on, our champ, Punjabi handsome munda Jimmy Shergill loses out Kangana's Tanu twice. We all remember the iconic line he says about Madhavan's Manu, "Yaha ek baar ghodi pe chadhna naseeb nahi hua, yeh saala ghodi pe hi ghoom raha hai."

Well, to cut things short, Jimmy obviously doesn't get the girl whereas Maddy and Kangana have this whole crazy fiasco going about. Jimmy whose character sort of matured in the second film, clearly realized that it's better to not be involved in a crazy and messy love sandwich that was Tanu and Manu's wedding.

Isme bhi Jimmy was supposed to end up with the girl as Harpreet Kaur urf Happy (Diana Penty) was supposed to marry him. However, like always, the heroine had someone in sight that was not Jimmy Shergill.

We really want to know. What's wrong with Jimmy? He's good-looking. Clearly was the go-to chocolate boy of Bollywood back in his Mohabbatein days. He's soft-spoken, can converse in Hindi-Punjabi-English. He'd really be ideal husband material, to be honest. But the truth hurts.
There are three things in life that are certain, taxes, Disha Patani dying in a movie and, Jimmy Shergill losing out on the girl in the movies.
However, thankfully, Jimmy's character had plenty of amazing dialogues in the film for which we are truly happy. I mean, he really isn't all that fussed in real life too. Just look at what the actor had to say when an interviewer asked him why he always lost the girl.
"Only when I lose the girl does the story move ahead. If I get the girl, how will the movie work? And these guys tell me first only -- either take the girl or take the dialogues. I say, give me the punchlines, leave the girl. People have fun with the dialogues."

Looks like our Jimmy-boy is all sorted. After all, there is more to life than ending up with the girl.
