    KARACHI: The pilot of a Pakistan International Airline?s (PIA) plane who let a Chinese woman into the cockpit during flight has been suspended, the airline?s chief executive officer said in a briefing to a special committee of the Senate on the performance of the PIA. Another pilot, Captain Amir Hashmi, who got into hot water for reportedly sleeping during a flight, has also been suspended.

    Captain Shahzad Aziz had invited a young Chinese woman during PIA flight PK-853 from Tokyo to Beijing early this month into the cockpit, according to a Geo News correspondent flying on the same plane.

    The woman, who was not authorised into the cabin area, stayed inside the cockpit with the pilot and first officer for over two hours, coming out only after the plane landed.
    Geo News correspondent Irfan Siddiqui recorded the video of the incident with his mobile phone, after which the news was reported on May 9.
    PIA authorities also accepted that Captain Shahzad has been a controversial figure, and has cases against him pertaining to sexual harassment and violation of rules. He also has a fake degree case against him.
    On the occasion, Pakistan Peoples Party leader Sherry Rehman said that PIA is trying to protect Captain Shahzad.
    The PIA chief executive told the committee presided over by Mushahid Hussain Syed that investigation into the Hashmi incident is under way and the pilot has been served a show cause notice.
    He said that there are contradictory reports as to how long he slept during the flight.

    COAS addressing the seminar " Role of Youth in Rejecting Extremism" held at Army Auditorium GHQ on 18 May - Photo ISPR    RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said on Thursday that India seemed to have given in to extremism to such an extent that it had become the new normal.
    "Hate has been mainstreamed in India and it is distorting their national outlook," Gen Bajwa said during his address at the Role of Youth in Rejecting Extremism seminar held at the General Headquarters.
    "The Hindutva extremism of the RSS and their GaoRakshaks, deprivation of Palestinians, the burning and desecration of mosques or gurdwaras in western capitals, the rise of hyper nationalists and the monster of racism, are all manifestations of extremism. We can easily say, it is emerging as a transnational phenomenon hence warranting a transnational, unified response," the Army chief said.
    The COAS emphasised that extremism was not due to any religion or ideology, rather it is a mindset where passion has given way to hate and intolerance of others.
    'Extremism unjustly applied to devout sections of Muslim societies'
    Gen Bajwa said that the term 'extremism' is often unjustly applied to devout sections of Muslim societies, alienating them in the process.
    "Although it is not always out of malice, but misunderstanding; yet it is imperative that we understand extremism in our own context."
    According to the COAS, the western definitions of countering violent extremism were mostly confined to what they call 'Islamic extremism'.
    "It is unfair and dangerous. Unfair, because of its inherent and totally wrong association of extremism with Islam. Dangerous, because it focuses too much attention on Muslim societies and masks the rise of extremism in multiple societies across the world."
    'War against terror in most critical phase'
    The COAS lauded the armed forces for setting an example for the whole world by cleansing the terrorists from their potholes. "We, as a nation, have fought the menace of terrorism most valiantly, giving unparalleled sacrifices. Our success is acknowledged the world over.
    "Today, we are at the most critical phase of our war against terror. As we transit gradually from major operations against terrorism to more intricate, targeted operations against residual threat, under the ambit of operation Rad-ul-Fasaad, we must also find ways to ensure that the causes behind terrorism are addressed and the National Action Plan is actualized," he said.
    General Bajwa said the main cause behind terrorism is extremism. "Remember, while the Army fights terrorists, terrorism and extremism is fought by law enforcing agencies and the society."
    Enemies waging biggest hybrid war
    He said the country's enemies, both state and non-state, are actively pursuing divisive tendencies in the society. "They are waging the biggest and most sustained hybrid war against us from multiple directions and using multiple ways."
    The army chief explained that the country is not only being targeted by terrorists but also spin masters of multiple hostile agencies, trying to subvert our minds, particularly that of our youth.

    He said that our homes, educational institutions, including schools, madrassahs and even institutes of higher learning, and media houses are the first line of defence against extremism in the society.
    "Being denied opportunities in the mainstream media, they are using faceless platforms on the internet and smart phones," he said.
    'No safe havens for miscreants'
    "Pakistan has done well in denying terrorists, of all hues and colours, any foothold in our territory. We have ensured the writ of state in the farthest and remotest corners of the country," asserted the COAS. "Today, there are no safe havens for any miscreants in Pakistan."
    We are actively taking measures to ensure that even residual presence does not use Pakistan?s soil against any country, nor will we tolerate others doing so against us, he warned.
    "Having defeated terrorism physically, now their deceitful message and narrative must also be defeated," he added.

    Sartaj Aziz - File Photo  ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has said issuing of stay by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the interim case of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav is not something extraordinary.

    In an interview, he said courts sometimes grant such orders which do not have any bearing on the long-term running of the case.
    Sartaj Aziz said it is the wrong impression that selection of counsel was not appropriate.
    He said the matter of consular access was not included in the operational order of the court. Adviser to Prime Minister said our stance is that security reasons are also very important.
    Sartaj Aziz speaks to Geo News  The ICJ, earlier, ordered Pakistan to halt the execution of the Indian spy until a final decision is reached.
    "Pakistan shall take all measures at its disposal to ensure that Jadhav is not executed pending the final decision in these proceedings," ordered Judge Ronny Abraham, president of the court, as he announced the decision.
    The ICJ rejected Pakistan's stance and stated that the court had jurisdiction and would hear the case and seek arguments from both parties.
    Judge Abraham stated that the ICJ had prima facie jurisdiction under Article 1 of the Optional Protocol to the Vienna Convention. The court further observed that the existence of a 2008 bilateral agreement on consular relations between India and Pakistan does not change its conclusion on the issue of jurisdiction.
    ?Pakistan shall inform the court of all measures taken in implementation of the present order. The court also decides that, until it has given its final decision, it shall remain seised of the matters which form the subject-matter of this order,? the order stated
    Explaining its reasoning, the court began by establishing that based on the initial facts, it has jurisdiction over the case.

    Reacting to the decision, Foreign Office Spokesman Nafees Zakaria said that no institution can be a party when it comes to the country?s national security.
    The FO spokesman said that the decision to challenge the jurisdiction of the ICJ was taken after consultation with all the institutions and agencies.
    The FO has also requested access to Indian spy Jadhav?s accomplices. Zakaria said that India did not give a positive response to Pakistan?s request regarding access to Jadhav?s accomplices.

    KARACHI: For commuters going home from work on Thursday, the roads presented a sea of long queues as they attempted to get out of the city center. 
    According to Traffic Police personnel, there is bumper-to-bumper traffic on the roads this evening, but the personnel on-ground are trying their best to keep the traffic moving. 
    Rangers personnel too were seen helping the Traffic Police in directing traffic near Shaheen Complex as the rush hour traffic poured in from II Chundrigar Road. 
    Traffic personnel told Geo News that if traffic continues to move and there no logjam, commuters should expect to reach their destinations with not more than a 30-minute delay. 
    According to sources at the DIG Traffic office, heavy vehicles coming to PICT after the good transporters ended their strike is putting pressure on the flow of traffic. Heavy traffic has been reported around the port area, Gul Bai, Maripur, Jinnah Bridge and West Wharf. 
    Other areas witnessing the heavy flow of traffic include University Road, Jehangir Road, II Chundrigar Road, Mali, Murgi Khana, MT Khan Road, Sher Shah, ICI Bridge, Hasan Square, Stadium Road, Aisha Manzil,  PIDC, Kemari, KICT Gate 15.

    BEIJING: Japan on Thursday lodged a protest with China after four Chinese coastguard vessels entered what Tokyo considers its territorial waters near disputed East China Sea islets and a drone-like object flew near one ship, the Japanese government said.
    It was the first such flight near the islands witnessed by Japanese officials, although Thursday's incident takes to 13 the number of intrusions this year by Chinese coastguard ships in the contested waters, Japan's coastguard said.
    Japan and China have long been at loggerheads over the tiny, uninhabited islands, called the Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. They are controlled by Japan but claimed also by China.
    Kenji Kanasugi, director-general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, protested to the Chinese embassy in Tokyo by telephone.
    "The Senkaku islands are Japan's inherent territory and the entry into the territorial waters by the Chinese government ships is absolutely unacceptable," a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said.
    "On top of that, there appears to have been a flight of a drone. We lodged a stern protest against this unilateral escalation of the situation by China."
    The Chinese embassy responded to the Japanese protest by reiterating "China's own stance" on the islands, the official added.
    In a brief statement on its website, China's State Oceanic Administration confirmed that four coast guard vessels had been patrolling by the islands, but made no mention of any drone.
    China routinely rejects Japanese criticism of such patrols, saying its ships have every right to operate in what China calls its territorial waters.

    The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Thursday ordered Pakistan to halt the execution of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav until a final decision in the proceedings.

    Pakistan is not bound to follow the decision of the International Court of Justice on Kulbushan Jhadav`s execution as the court`s decision is ?advisory?. We can raise the jurisdiction question again. ICJ is not a criminal court.  As many as three people were executed by the US contrary to the ICJ`s decision over it.

    The very first question which we need to ask is that why did we concede the compulsory jurisdiction of ICJ?I have requested that before the authorities to withdraw it before the decision. We shouldn?t have played in this arena. We should have played it at our pitch.
    If we don?t follow the decision then the ICJ judge will write a letter to UN Secretary General for violation of signatories.

India has been successful in their demand to delay the execution, in light of the decision it appears that we have not been successful in making our case. The question here is what our Foreign Office was doing? And why our government was not prepared on the case.

    We were not prepared well enough. Our government and Foreign Office was not expecting that the international court of Justice will proceed on this case so quickly. Indian demands have been approved in this case. 
    Our case was on the jurisdiction which was rejected.   
    When PM Nawaz`s case was presented in the court ? high-level lawyers were on the court but when Pakistan`s case was in the international court, why we didn?t we use our best available resources. Did we not take this serious? If not then why we didn?t

    WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday blasted the probe into whether his team colluded with Russia to tilt the 2016 election in his favor as the "greatest witch hunt" in US history.
    His comment on Twitter came after former FBI chief Robert Mueller was appointed a special counsel with sweeping powers to head the probe.
    "This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" Trump wrote.
    Also via Twitter, Trump accused former president Barack Obama and his 2016 rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton, of unspecified "illegal acts."
    "With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel [sic] appointed!" he wrote.
    Trump has denied any links to Moscow, but the appointment of a special counsel dramatically raises the stakes in a crisis threatening to paralyze his presidency.
    The Republican leader, who has struggled to shake off suspicions that Russia helped put him in the White House, has been accused of seeking to block the investigation by firing FBI chief James Comey.
    Mueller´s appointment has come as Trump fends off reports he shared US secrets with Russian officials in the Oval Office, and had asked Comey to drop his investigation into former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn.

    On his arrival, General Zubair Mahmood Hayat was received by Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman. He was given a detailed briefing on the organisation, role and functioning of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
    Later on, the CJCSC called on the air chief in his office, wherein the two top military officials discussed matters of professional interest.
    Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman apprised the CJCSC about various ongoing modernisation/upgradation programmes of the PAF.
    The CJCSC expressed his confidence in operational preparedness of the PAF.
    The air chief, on the occasion, presented him a new book on the PAF titled ?PAF Attaining New Heights.?

    The spokesman pointed out that there exists a bilateral pact on consular access between the two countries since 2008.
    Zakaria said that according to the pact?s Article six, the matter of consular access lies solely on the merit of the case.

    ?India trying to portray Jadhav's sentencing as humanitarian issue?

    Zakaria said India weaved a humanitarian angle in the Indian-spy Kulbushan Jadhav?s case to divert the world's attention from his real actions: fomenting terrorism inside Pakistan.  
    "After India stood exposed in state-sponsored terrorism and financing terrorism, it tried to divert attention from presenting the Kulbushan Jadhav case with a humanitarian angle,? he said.  
    He also said that Pakistan?s stance on the RAW agent is very clear: It is a matter of national security and we will not compromise on it.
    Talking about the Jadhav case at the International Court of Justice, he said Pakistan?s reply [to the court] was submitted in line with Article 36 of the Vienna Convention, explaining that Pakistan, in some issues, does not recognise the jurisdiction of the ICJ.
    He also said that the situation of human rights in the Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK) is deplorable.  
    Extremist organisation RSS tried its best to suppress the voice of people in IoK, he remarked, adding that Pakistan condemns the Indian massacre of innocent Kashmiris.
    India has also closed down about 36 television channels in IoK to suppress the voice of the people, he claimed. "The international community needs to play an important role in solving the Kashmir issue," he urged.
    On the issue, Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has sent a letter to the UN secretary-general exposing atrocities in IoK, he explained.   
    He also expressed concern over the arrests of freedom leaders in IoK, adding that Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was not even given permission to seek medical treatment.  
    Speaking about the situation on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, he remarked that the border cannot be opened till the situation is completely resolved. He stressed that Afghanistan should initiate peace talks with Pakistan.
    On Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's visit to China, he remarked that the trip was quite successful. The premier held meetings with top leaders in China and met the presidents of Russia and Turkey.

    THE HAGUE: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Thursday ordered Pakistan to halt the execution of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav until a final decision in the proceedings.

    "Pakistan shall take all measures at its disposal to ensure that Jadhav is not executed pending the final decision in these proceedings," ordered Judge Ronny Abraham, president of the court, as he announced the decision.
    The ICJ rejected Pakistan's stance and stated that the court had jurisdiction and would hear the case and seek arguments from both parties.
    Analysts and politicians reactions  Judge Abraham stated that the ICJ had prima facie jurisdiction under Article 1 of the Optional Protocol to the Vienna Convention. The court further observed that the existence of a 2008 bilateral agreement on consular relations between India and Pakistan does not change its conclusion on the issue of jurisdiction.
    ?Pakistan shall inform the court of all measures taken in implementation of the present order. The court also decides that, until it has given its final decision, it shall remain seised of the matters which form the subject-matter of this order,? the order stated
    Explaining its reasoning, the court began by establishing that based on the initial facts, it has jurisdiction over the case.
    According to the judgment, it then turned to the question whether the rights alleged by India are at least plausible and decided in the affirmative.
    The court then focused on the issue of the link between the rights claimed and the provisional measures requested, and observed that a link exists between the rights claimed by India and the provisional measures being sought.
    The court then examined whether there is a risk of irreparable prejudice and urgency. It considered that the mere fact that Jadhav is under a death sentence and might therefore be executed is sufficient to demonstrate the existence of a risk of irreparable prejudice to the rights claimed by India. The court further observed that Pakistan has indicated that any execution of Jadhav would probably not take place before August 2017. ?This means that there is a risk that an execution could take place at any moment thereafter, before the court has given its final decision,? it stated, adding that Pakistan has [also] not given any assurance that Jadhav will not be executed before the court has rendered its final decision. ?In those circumstances, the court is satisfied that there is urgency in the present case,? it stated.
    Following the judgment, Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria stated that Pakistan had challenged the authority of the ICJ after consulting with all institutions and agencies. "No institution can be party to Pakistan's national security," Zakaria said.

    The ICJ on Monday had conducted hearing into India's petition demanding staying of Pakistan's death sentence to Kulbhushan Jadhav, a RAW operative and on-duty Indian navy officer who was apprehended from Balochistan in a counter-intelligence operation in March 2016.
    Pakistan?s counsel, Khawar Qureshi, presented the country?s stance in the ICJ on the death sentence handed to Jadhav, contending that according to the Vienna Convention the case cannot be heard in the ICJ.
    ?India has not provided any evidence to rebut that Jadhav is a terrorist,? Qureshi informed the court, moving it to turn down India's request.
    Jadhav was arrested in a counter-intelligence operation in Balochistan last year and sentenced to death by a military court last month on charges of espionage and sabotage.

    During the hearing on Thursday, Zaid's lawyer Khawaja Naveed Ahmed said the video that police made did not explain the complete scenario. The lawyer added personnel at Kunri police station used abusive language that was not shot on camera. He said the case lodged against Zaid was false.
    However, the petition was sent back to Mirpurkhas as Justice Abdul Rasool Memon, who was hearing the case, only held the jurisdiction for cases of Karachi.
    The incident came into public notice after a video surfaced, showing an inebriated Zaid sitting on the station house officer's seat in a police station. Zaid was surrounded by his aides insulting the SHO and demanding the police officer sit on the ground while addressing him.
    After the video surfaced, Kunri DSP Sher Khan and SHO Tassawur Jatt were suspended. According to Umerkot SSP Usman Bajwa, the two police officers showed weakness and hid facts.
    Later, the police registered a case against six individuals including Zaid, Hassan Talpur, Jamil Marwarri, Lachman Meghwarr, Kareem and Shafi.
    The police came into action after Sindh IGP AD Khawaja took notice of the incident and ordered the culprits be arrested soon.

    ISLAMABAD: Opposition members staged a walkout after Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif called Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNA Ayesha Gulalai a ‘thief’ during National Assembly proceedings on Thursday.
    Speaking about the PTI workers protest against PESCO, Khawaja Asif remarked that around 89% electricity is stolen from the feeders of the areas, whose leaders were protesting. About 91% electricity is stolen from its neighbouring areas.
    “If thieves continue to protest then it ridicules the system,” he remarked, adding “I reject the words of the ones who lead thieves” while taking a jibe at Gulalai, who lead the protest in Peshawar.
    Responding to this, PTI members protested the remarks of Khawaja Asif.
    Gulalai said that “billions of rupees are taken from the people but no electricity is given to them. Electricity is not supplied to the nation and then the people are called thieves.”
     In the matter, Opposition leader Khursheed Shah said that “electricity is being stolen across the country, but it is important to respect one another.”
    “If you call a MNA a thief [for electricity being stolen from her area], then what about those stealing electricity in Lahore,” he remarked.    
    On this, the opposition leaders chanted slogans of ‘Nawaz Sharif Chor [Nawaz Sharif is a theif]’ and ‘Shehbaz Sharif chor [Shehbaz Sharif is a theif]’
    To this, Khursheed Shah responded that those against the parliament should say nothing as people who are against democracy use these same slogans to their advantage. If we keep calling each other thieves, then others will have no problem labeling us thieves, he added.
    He also said that “they [government members]call people thieves and then ask them for votes. Words which preserve the respect of the parliament should only be used in the court.”
    The PTI members then asked Khawaja Asif to apologise to Gulalai after which they staged a walkout.
     Upon which, Khursheed Shah said that calling other MNAs with different names is not just the matter of one party. Later on, all opposition parties staged a walk out.

    Suspended cricketer Nasir Jamshed has threatened to take the Pakistan Cricket Board to court over spot-fixing allegations against him.
    In a video message posted on Twitter, the former Pakistan opener claimed that the PCB was maligning his name and challenged the board?s anti-corruption unit to present whatever evidence they had in public domain.
    ?The PCB is taking advantage of my silence. Time to answer back and take them to court,? he wrote in his post.
    "PCB is being unfair with me as they are pressurising players and asking them to testify against me," Jamshed said. "Rather than maligning my name, I urge PCB to offer the evidence and I challenge them to bring all the evidence in public. There is something called professionalism and with all this my personal life is being affected. I have already consulted my lawyer and we want to challenge this and are willing to take PCB to court over this."
    The PCB believes Jamshed played a central role in the spot-fixing scandal which hit the Pakistan Super League tournament earlier this year. He was arrested by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) in February, the same day he was provisionally suspended by the PCB for allegedly violating its anti-corruption code. He was later released on bail.
    On Wednesday, the PCB suspended left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz for two months, with one month suspended, after he admitted to the charge of failing to timely report approach by the bookies. He was also fined Rs 200,000.
    The PCB tribunal meanwhile continues its proceedings against Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Jamshed and Shahzaib Hasan. Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan was suspended for a year in the probe.

    RAWALPINDI: Faceless and nameless hostile forces are polluting the mind of the youth through social media, stated Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday.
    Addressing participants of a seminar titled Role of Youth in Rejecting Extremism, he termed the youth an asset and investment for the future.  
    “The war against terrorism has to be waged together by all organs of the state and public,” he said, adding that Operation Raddul Fasaad represents the beginning of a new phase in this war.
    Pakistan Army is the only military in the world that has defeated terrorism of this scale, the army chief stated, explaining that security threats have [now] diminished resulting in an environment where development can take place.
    Earlier at the seminar, DG ISPR Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor also spoke on the issue of terrorism and youth.
