    LAHORE: The Pakistan squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 arrived in London on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming tournament.
    ICC tweeted a photo of Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed posing with the trophy in London along with other players including Azhar Ali and Babar Azam.
    Sarfraz Ahmed looked all set to lead his team into the second-biggest cricket event, next only to the ICC World Cup.
    Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Junaid Khan, Fakhar Zaman and Faheem Ashraf departed from Lahore to participate in the Champions Trophy.
    All-rounder Imad Wasim tweeted a group photo of the players from the airport ahead of the departure.
    Pakistan will kickstart their Champions Trophy campaign with a match against archrivals India at Edgbaston on June 4.
    The Green Shirts will face South Africa on June 7 and Sri Lanka on June 12.

    WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will urge unity between the world's major faiths on an ambitious first foreign trip that will take him to Saudi Arabia, the Vatican, and Jerusalem, the White House said Tuesday.
    National Security Advisor HR McMaster laid out a detailed itinerary for the "historic trip", due to start late this week, and confirmed that Trump would address a gathering of Muslim leaders on his "hopes for a peaceful vision of Islam".
    Previous US leaders have generally chosen a US neighbour, such as Canada or Mexico, for their first presidential voyage, but Trump intends to plunge right into some of the world's most difficult spiritual and political conflicts.
    In Saudi Arabia, after a day of talks with King Salman and his crown prince, Trump will attend a gathering of dozens of leaders from across the Muslim world.
    "The speech is intended to unite the broader Muslim world against common enemies of all civilisation and to demonstrate America's commitment to our Muslim partners," McMaster said, adding that Trump will help open a centre to de-radicalise extremists.

    Trump campaigned for office vowing to destroy "radical Islamic terrorism" and impose "a total ban on all Muslim immigration" to the United States, raising concerns that his election would only deepen distrust between America and the Muslim world.
    In office since January 20, he has already attempted to impose a ban on travellers from a group of mainly-Muslim countries, before his order fell foul of the US courts.
    But McMaster stressed that Trump would be visiting sites associated with the world's great religions to stress "that we all have to be united and we have to be joined together with an agenda of tolerance and moderation".
    Western Wall
    After Saudi Arabia, Trump's voyage will take him to Jerusalem, where he will meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visit the Yad Vashem memorial to the Holocaust. The next day he will pray at the Western Wall, one of Judaism's holiest sites.

    On the same day, he will meet President Mahmud Abbas of the Palestinian territories in Bethlehem on the West Bank "where he will convey his administration's eagerness to facilitate an agreement that ends" the Israel-Palestinian conflict".
    Palestinian officials have put their hopes in Trump to revive the moribund peace process, but – after early enthusiasm for the Republican billionaire's rise gave way to concerns – Israeli officials have been on edge in the run-up to the visit.
    McMaster failed to answer a direct question as to whether the US government considers the Western Wall to be within Israeli territory, and he said Israeli leaders would not accompany him on his visit to the site in Jerusalem's Old City.
    "He's going to the Western Wall mainly in connection with the theme to connect with three of the world's great religions," McMaster said.

    After Jerusalem, Trump will head to the Vatican for an audience with Pope Francis. The US leader will celebrate the contributions of Catholics to America and the world, discuss diplomatic issues with the pontiff and tour St Peter's Basilica.
    After the Vatican, the trip takes a secular turn with a visit to Belgium to meet European Union (EU) officials and attend the NATO summit on May 24-25. He then heads to Italy and the island of Sicily for the G7 summit on May 26 and 27.

    KARACHI: Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Tuesday said that China has not put any demand in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor which is against the interest of Pakistan.
    Speaking in Geo News' program Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, he said that CPEC is the most transparent project and there is no detail which has not been shared to the Senate and National Assembly committees.
    “There is no aspect [of CPEC] which has not been debated in the Parliament. There are a number of briefings which I have given to the chambers. Every detail is on our website,” he said.  
    Responding to a question, the minister said that there is no secrecy on the project, however, added that how can a plan which has not been officially approved be shared on a public domain.
    “It is inappropriate till both sides sign the document, one party unilaterally announce it,” he added.
    “Pakistani side after its approval from cabinet sent the draft to China. From Chinese side it was conveyed to us that they have agreed to us in principal, however, as their senior leadership and stakeholders are busy in the One Belt One Road conference, we need time for their endorsement for the formal proceedings", said Ahsan Iqbal.
    “After the summit, probably at the end of this month, they will sign it.”
    Planning and Development Minister said that Japan and Korea progressed because it had a strategic partner in the face of US. Malaysia had Japan as a strategic partner. India had the Soviet Union, today, any developing country which needs development it also needs a strategic partner to hold its hand.
    "Almighty has given us China as a friend to form a strategic partnership with", he added.
    Iqbal said that the motive behind the long-term strategic partnership is to put Pakistan on the path for industrialisation and the agriculture sector towards value-addition.
    Rubbishing few rumours, he said, "I don’t know where it is written that Pakistani raw material will be taken and processed in China."
    "There is no recommendation in consideration of visa-free entry of Chinese nationals in Pakistan", he further said.

    PARIS:  Two-time champion Maria Sharapova will not play at Roland Garros this year after the French tennis federation denied her a wild card, FFT president Bernard Guidicelli said on Tuesday.
    The former world number one, who only returned from a 15-month doping ban last month, will miss the French Open, which she won in 2012 and 2014, for the second year in a row.
    "Nobody can deprive her of her two titles at Roland Garros, but today I can´t grant her the wild card requested," Guidicelli said on Facebook Live.
    "The titles won here, she won within the rules without owing anything to anyone.
    "While wild cards exist for players returning from injury, there is nothing for a return from a doping ban," he added.
    The five-time Grand Slam champion was banned for two years for using meldonium, with the penalty later reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport which ruled she was not an intentional doper.
    After the ban expired on April 26, the Russian returned to competition at the Stuttgart Open, reaching the semi-finals, and progressed to the last 32 of the Madrid Open, too late to earn herself a qualifying spot for Paris.
    "I am very sorry for Maria, and very sorry for her fans. They might be very disappointed and she might be disappointed. But it is my responsibility and my mission to respect the high standards of the game to be played without any doping," said Guidicelli.

    KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) spokesman Mashhood Tajwar on Tuesday accepted that the airline’s crew might be involved in the Heathrow incident, in which UK authorities seized heroin "concealed in packets" and detained the plane’s crew for several hours.
    UK’s National Crime Agency earlier today said that its “officers are investigating following the seizure of a quantity of heroin found by Border Force officers onboard a flight from Pakistan at Heathrow on Monday, May 15”.

    On being grilled how frequent drug smuggling incidents on PIA flights could be possible without support from inside, the PIA spokesman speaking in Geo News show Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath agreed that no one department could be involved in an incident like today’s.
    Tajwar while acknowledging the issue said that other agencies like the Anti-Narcotics Force, Airport Security Force and customs and not PIA is responsible for giving final clearance to a plane before the flight.
    The PIA spokesman argued that an airline cannot handle the issue of global narcotics networks, saying airlines have only a “small role to play”.
    Inquired about the plane’s crew which was detained for several hours and had their passports confiscated, Tajwar confirmed that the 13 crew members are staying in a hotel and will return tomorrow to Pakistan as per schedule.
    The crew members were kept in detention for five hours. According to UK Border Agency (UKBA) sources, information had been received from Pakistan that there were narcotics onboard the flight. There was suspicion that the crew might be involved and that narcotics were hidden in different panels and areas of the plane.
    Customs authorities in Pakistan have started an investigation into how the plane laden with heroin was provided clearance to fly.
    The authorities have begun a probe against staff responsible for giving the clearance.

    The teaser has gone viral in the Pakistani cyberspace – with anticipation running high on what the star-duo is up to.
    Hours before sharing the teaser on his Twitter account, Akhtar also shared a couple of photos of the shoot of the teaser in which they are seen riding a motorcycle.
     “Here you go, I am showing you 1st teaser of our upcoming game show. Trust me you guys are going to love us both in different get ups..more to come,” Shoaib Akhtar captained the teaser.

    LOS ANGELES: "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" proved an epic failure in its opening weekend, taking a calamitous $15.4 million in North America, data showed Monday, less than a tenth of its budget.
    Movies tend to make by far their biggest box office earnings in their opening weekend, often dropping by 50 percent the following week, meaning the revisionist saga directed by Guy Ritchie, 48, is doomed to be one of the flops of the year.
    Starring Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law, the lavish $175 Warner Bros. movie has an average rating of 4.6 out of 10 from more than 140 reviews collated by movie website Rotten Tomatoes.
    "To that hallowed list of great expensive follies -- ´John Carter,´ ´Ishtar,´ ´Heaven´s Gate´--let us ceremonially add another name: ´King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,´" said Nico Lang of Salon magazine.
    The epic´s global take was arguably worse, standing at a woeful $45 million by Monday morning from 51 markets, including a disappointing third-place opening in the lucrative Chinese box office.
    Ritchie—once seen as the whip-smart enfant terrible of British filmmaking -- announced himself on the scene with critically acclaimed crime capers "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" (1998) and "Snatch" (2000).
    He has struggled to maintain his early momentum, earning derision for 2002 romantic comedy "Swept Away," starring then-wife Madonna, while "Revolver" (2005) and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E," (2015) disappointed at the box office.
    The domestic performance landed "King Arthur" in third place in the weekend top 10, industry monitor Exhibitor Relations said.
    Comedy space romp "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" dropped 55 percent on its massive opening weekend in the United States and Canada, but still maintained its top spot with $65.3 million.
    The Marvel tale of a band of misfit space adventurers accounted for more than half of the cash hauled in by the 12 top-selling movies, placing it a long way ahead of second-placed Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn comedy vehicle "Snatched," which took $19.5 million.
    "The Fate of the Furious," the eighth part of the long-running Universal franchise, managed $5.4 million in the fifth week of a lucrative run that has seen it make $1.2 billion worldwide.
    Hanging on for fifth place was Disney blockbuster "Beauty and the Beast," starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, which hauled in another $4.8 million, taking it to nearly half a billion dollars in nine weeks.
    Rounding out the top 10 were:

    Facebook Inc's Instagram has souped up its camera with quirky face-tracking filters, adding another feature similar to one offered by social media rival Snap Inc's Snapchat.
    Instagram users will now be able to choose from eight filters including koala ears that move and twitch as well as math equations that spin to create humorous effects for their photos or videos.
    Other new features include a rewind mode for videos, which will allow users to play video in reverse, and hashtag stickers to visit hashtag pages.
    Facebook has been amping up its camera tool to take on Snapchat's features such as disappearing messages and face-tracking filters, which are hugely popular among its teenaged and millennial users.
    The world's largest social media network has already added several Snapchat-like features such as Stories, which allows users to upload pictures and video slideshows that disappear after 24 hours.
    For now, Instagram does not have sponsored face filters, where advertisers can create their own content. Snapchat's "sponsored lenses" have become a major part of its advertising revenue.
    "If we're being honest with ourselves, this is the way the tech industry works and frankly, it's how all industries work," said Instagram's head of product Kevin Weil at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York, when asked about the similarities between Instagram's new features and Snap's existing ones.
    "Kudos to Snapchat for being the first to Stories, but it's a format and it's going to be adopted widely across a lot of different platforms."
    Instagram said in April over 200 million people used Stories daily.
    Snap, in its first earnings report as a listed company last week, said it had 166 million daily active users as of March 31.

    RAWALPINDI: Security forces on Tuesday recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition from North and South Waziristan, the Inter Services Public Relations said in a statement.
    Security personnel conducted separate intelligence-based operations (IBOs) in village Mutre, Tehsil Dattakhel in North Waziristan Agency and in Pangi Pari Khel village in South Waziristan Agency.
    The IBOs came as part of ongoing operation Raddul Fasaad.
    The arms and ammunition, recovered during the operations, included SMGs, anti-aircraft guns, rockets, grenades and various calibre ammunition from abandoned compounds.
    Terrorists had buried these caches under the ground.

    KARACHI: Police have booked top leadership of Pak Sarzameen Party for unrest during a rally held in Karachi on Sunday, a senior police official confirmed.
    On Sunday, the PSP held a 'Million March' in protest against non-provision of basic facilities to the people of Karachi, during which workers and supporters attempted to reach the CM House, situated in Karachi's Red Zone area.
    They were confronted by the law enforcers to keep them from heading forth to the chief minister's residence. Police shelled tear gas on protesters at the rally to disperse them, briefly detaining PSP leaders Mustafa Kamal, Raza Haroon and Dr Sagheer.
    Police also registered a case against Mustafa Kamal, Anees Qaimkhani, Raza Haroon among 11 others for unrest during the rally at Karachi's Shahrah-e-Faisal.
    The case was registered with Saddar police with 11 people nominated in it, confirmed DIG South.
    Earlier today, Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah also accused PSP of using women and children as human shields to break the law.
    Speaking at a press conference, Shah said minimum force was used to disperse protesting masses and no one was hurt in its wake.
    The chief minister also warned Mustafa Kamal against using harsh language.

    ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Tuesday refuted the reports claiming that former special Assistant on Foreign Affairs to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi is with the Pakistan`s high-level delegation attending One Belt One Road Conference in Beijing.
    Fatemi was sacked from his office by PM Nawaz in light of the recommendations suggested in the Dawn leaks report.
    The minister responded to the tweets Shireen Mazari and Naeem-ul-Haque, saying that the PTI leaders aim for creating clash among the state institutions, further adding that PTI is habitual of levelling unfounded allegations.
    Expressing her regret, she said that PTI should avoid hurling hollow statements over wrong information and without investigation.
    She added that senior PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi should train both the representatives.

    US President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended having disclosed information to senior Russian officials last week, saying he had an "absolute right" to do so and had shared facts to get Moscow to step up its fight against Daesh.
    The president took to Twitter to counter a torrent of criticism, including from his fellow Republicans, after reports that during a White House meeting he had revealed highly classified information about a planned Daesh operation.
    Two US officials said Trump shared the intelligence, supplied by an ally of the United States in the fight against the terrorist group, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak during a meeting in the Oval Office last Wednesday.
    The disclosures late on Monday roiled the administration as it struggled to move past the backlash over Trump's abrupt firing on May 9 of FBI Director James Comey, who was investigating potential ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
    The turmoil has overshadowed Republican legislative priorities such as healthcare and tax reform and laid bare sharp divisions between the White House and US intelligence agencies, which concluded in January that Russia had tried to influence the election in Trump's favour.
    Russia has denied such meddling, and Trump bristles at any suggestion he owed his Nov. 8 victory to Moscow.
    "As President I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety," Trump said on Twitter.
    In a later tweet, Trump took aim at "LEAKERS in the intelligence community," a frequent target of his months-old administration.
    Trump repeatedly assailed his Democratic rival in the presidential election, Hillary Clinton, for her handling of classified information by email while she was secretary of state. The FBI concluded after an investigation last year that there were no grounds to pursue any charges against Clinton.
    Defending Trump
    The Kremlin came to Trump's defence on Tuesday, calling reports that he had disclosed classified material in the White House meeting as "complete nonsense."
    Trump's secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, and national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, issued statements saying no sources, methods or military operations were discussed at the Russian meeting.
    McMaster said the story, initially reported by The Washington Post, was false.
    The US officials told Reuters that while the president has the authority to disclose even the most highly classified information at will, in this case he did so without consulting the ally that provided it, which threatens to jeopardise a long-standing intelligence-sharing agreement.
    US allies including Australia, New Zealand and Japan cited the White House denials and said intelligence sharing would continue. Some analysts, however, said the reports could undermine trust between partners.
    The reports came days before Trump departs on Friday for his first overseas trip as president, to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy and Belgium.
    The two top Republicans in Congress, which is controlled by the party, House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, were muted in their response. Ryan's office said he hoped for a full explanation, while McConnell told Bloomberg TV on Tuesday he wished for a little less drama from the White House.
    Other Republicans, however, expressed concern. Senator Susan Collins said on Tuesday that even though the president has legal authority to disclose classified information, "it would be very troubling if he did share such sensitive reporting with the Russians."
    She called for the Senate Intelligence Committee to be briefed on the matter.
    Bob Corker, the Republican head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Monday the allegations were "very, very troubling."
    "Obviously, they’re in a downward spiral right now," he said of the White House. "And they’ve got to come to grips with all that’s happening.

    NEW DELHI: At least 16 suspected Maoists have been killed in a firefight with security forces in central India, police said Tuesday, the same region where rebels massacred two dozens soldiers last month.
    The skirmish occurred near Bijapur district in central Chhattisgarh state, where Maoist rebels have been engaging Indian forces in jungle battles for 50 years.
    More than 300 police and paramilitary troops had been tracking the rebels -- also known as Naxals -- in a joint operation since the weekend, said D M Awasthi, chief of the Chhattisgarh anti-Naxal force.
    "We can confirm at least 16 Naxals have been killed in the ongoing operation," he told AFP, without elaborating on the circumstances in which they died.
    There was, however, no clarity on when the gun battle took place.
    Another police officer said the rebels were killed in two separate gun battles, and that a policeman was also killed.
    "One of our jawan (troops) was killed and another two injured in the operation," local police officer Mohit Garg told AFP.
    Last month, in one of the deadliest attacks of its kind in years, rebels killed 24 police commandos as they guarded a road project in Sukhma district, making off with weapons and ammunition.
    The government responded with operations across the insurgent-dominated, so-called "Red Corridor" stretching through central and eastern India.
    The guerrillas, who say they are fighting for the rights of tribal people and landless farmers have been locked in a decades-long armed conflict with the authorities.
    The Maoists are believed to be present in at least 20 states but are most active in Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra, occupying thousands of square kilometres (miles) of land.
    The decades-long insurgency is believed to have cost tens of thousands of lives.

    GHOTKI: A trailer collided with a rickshaw near in Ghotki district in northern Sindh on Tuesday, killing at least six passengers and injuring eight others.
    According to rescue sources, the passengers were returning to Sadiqabad after the Urs of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan.
    Earlier today, at least five of a family were killed when a truck and van collided near Qasba Mona in Chakwal early morning on Tuesday.
    Eleven people including six children were injured in the accident were shifted to the hospital, rescue sources told Geo News.
    On Monday, at least four schoolchildren and a driver were killed and eight children critically injured when a speeding oil tanker crushed a school van in Multan.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) have demanded the government to present inquiry report of Dawn leaks in the National Assembly.
    The English-language daily, Dawn, had published a story on October 6, in which journalist Cyril Almeida had written about an alleged civil-military rift during the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting over the issue of tackling jihadi outfits.
    The story drew an outpour of criticism with the military stating that it was fed to the reporter and demanded investigations into it. It cost Almeida placement of his name on the Exit Control List for less than a week, before the government eventually lifted his travel ban.
    PTI lawmaker Shireen Mazari said the interior minister termed the matter against the national security and if that was not the case then Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan should withdraw from his stance.
    In October 2016, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took back the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage from Pervaiz Rashid, weeks after the military's top commanders said a 'false and fabricated' newspaper report breached national security.
    Mazari said that Tariq Fatemi was made a scapegoat, while he denied allegations against him.
    An inquiry committee, formed to probe the matter, had in its report placed the blame for the leaks on Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi and Principal Information Officer at the Press Information Department Rao Tehsin, sources had earlier told Geo News.
    The government, on April 29, also withdrew the portfolio of PM's aide on Foreign Affairs from Tariq Fatemi, followed by transfer of Principal Information Officer at the Press Information Department (PID) Rao Tehseen.
    Maintaining the matter was of national security, Asad Umar called for bringing it into the Parliament.
    "The matter caused defamation of the country and the military, since India gave enough hype to it. It is the jurisdiction of the Parliament to design the country's security and foreign policies, not of any institution," he said, adding that not only the military, but 200 million people of the country were maligned due to this matter.
    He questioned that if it was not a national security issue then why was it given such publicity, further inquiring, "If media is independent, then why Pervez Rasheed and Rao Tehseen were replaced from their respective posts after being held responsible for not being able hold back the story?"
    Munazza Hassan demanded a ruling be given to present the inquiry report before the National Security Committee.
    "If Tariq Fatemi was replaced as PM's aide for violating national security, then what is he doing with official delegation to China these days," asked Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
    PPP leader Naveed Qamar said it was a sensitive matter and withdrawing the tweet was no solution. The government will have to answer whether the story was fabricated or not, he added.
    The report has not yet been made public by the government.

    According to reports, in a number of localities there is no electricity from at least eight hours with District Central being the most affected area, furthermore in Malir Halt, Rifa-e-Aam, Alfalah society, Gulshan-e-Rafi ,Saudagaran society and Shah Faisal town there have been no power from early hours of the day.
    On April 2, the metropolis faced the same issue as power outage in different areas left many people without electricity bringing daily activities to a standstill.
    The blackout occurred in Defence Housing Authority phases I, II and VII along with II Chunrigar Road and Burnes Road. The area residents of Saddar and Sultanabad also said that they were experiencing power outage.
    Moreover, FC Area, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Karimabad, Moosa Colony, Malir, Korangi, New Karachi, FB Area also experienced blackout.
    According to K-Electric, the outage occurred after a technical fault affected grid stations in different areas of the port city.

    NOWSHERA: Police on Tuesday arrested three more suspects, including an Islamic Studies lecturer, in Mashal lynching case, bringing the total tally to 56.
    Suspects include Wajid alias Malang, an Islamic Studies lecturer at a government degree college, and students Jalal and Sajid.

    Police said that Wajid was the right-hand man of the main accused in the case, Arif, who remains on the run, and had also given an incendiary speech before Mashal was murdered by a mob.
    Sajid and Jalal were presented in a special Anti-Terrorism Court today, which remanded the two in four-day police custody. Wajid will be presented in court tomorrow.
    Mashal Khan was a student at the Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan was lynched by an enraged mob on the premises of the University after being accused of blasphemy.

    BHAKKAR: A dog, which bit a child, was sentenced to death by the Assistant Commissioner in Bhakkar’s Kalor vicinity on Tuesday.
    The dog's owner filed an appeal with the Additional Deputy Commissioner against the peculiar punishment.
    "The affected child's family registered a case against my dog, following which it completed a one-week prison sentence. Any further punishment for it would be unfair," the dog's owner Jamil said.
    He added that he would knock on the doors of all courts to get justice for his pet.
    Assistant Commissioner Raja Saleem said that the sentence was announced on humanitarian grounds.
    "The dog injured the child hence it should be killed," Saleem said.
    The TMO was also instructed to check the dog's registration, he added, stating that a case against the dog's owner is in progress in a civil court.

    FAISALABAD: State Minister for Water and Supply Chaudhary Abid Sher Ali Monday announced that there would be no loadshedding during Sehr and Iftar while measures would also be taken for better load management especially during Taraveeh and other prayers timings.
    Talking to the media persons at FESCO Headquarters, he said that all power distribution companies had been directed to make arrangements for providing uninterrupted electricity supply during Sehr and Iftar.
    He said the government was utilising all available resources for maintenance and improvement of power distribution system.
    In this connection, Rs 15 billion were being spent on the upgradation of FESCO system, he added.
    The state minister observed that 4 years back, the rural areas were experiencing 10 or more hours loadshedding daily but now the duration had been reduced up to 4-5 hours daily.
    He said the present government had launched a number of projects in energy sector due to which loadshedding would be ended completely from Pakistan by the end of this year, whereas the country would have surplus electricity from next year.
    He said that Prime Minister, Muhammed Nawaz Sharif was taking keen interest in public welfare, besides taking steps for poverty alleviation from the country.
    He said the incumbent government had the privilege to initiate China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which would bring revolution in all spheres of life including industrial, trade, business and agriculture sectors besides creating millions of job opportunities in the country.
    He said that anti-state elements were hatching conspiracies to derail the development pace by hoodwinking the people on one pretext or the other.
    They are also trying to create rift among state organs but they should realise that the people of Pakistan were well-aware of their nefarious designs, he said.
    The people will also reject such elements in the coming general election because the nation had needed progress and prosperity not hollow slogans, he added.
    Abid Sher Ali criticised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and said the PTI even could not establish a new school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) despite it had been enjoying power in the province for the last 4 years.
    The present government would complete its constitutional tenure, he added.
    Responding to a question, he said that 181 trolley mounted power transformers had been provided to Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) and these would be used to replace the defective transformer in case of emergency.
    Similarly, 1123 power transformers of various capacities were also present in FESCO Store and these would immediately be installed in place of burnt or defective transformers, he added.
    The Minister said that 66-KV grid stations were also being upgraded up to 132-KV and the project would help in ensuring uninterrupted power supply to consumers besides redressing their complaints regarding low voltages and non-issuance of electricity connections.

    ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved a relief package with subsidies worth over Rs1.6 billion rupees for the forthcoming month of Ramazan.
    The committee approved the package at a meeting presided by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar here in Islamabad on Tuesday.
    The package will provide 19 food items to the people on subsidised rates through utility stores.
    The subsidised food items include wheat flour, sugar, ghee, oil, pulses, white grams, baisen, dates, rice, squashes, black tea, milk, and spices.
    The Utility Stores Corporation will also reduce prices of over 2,400 other items by 5-10 percent, obtaining special discount from suppliers and reducing its own profit margins.
    The ECC also decided an increase in quantity of urea approved for exports from the existing 0.3 to 0.6 million metric tons. The deadline for export of urea was extended till October 31.
    The ECC, on a proposal by the Finance Division, approved the restoration of duty and sales tax on import of cotton with effect from July 15 this year.
    The decision was made to boost the confidence of domestic cotton growers during the upcoming sowing season.

    NEW DELHI: Human rights activist Arundhati Roy has called the Indian aggression in the Kashmir ‘shameful’ and said that the New Delhi`s oppression cannot subdue Kashmiri struggle.
    Speaking during her visit to Srinagar, she said India cannot achieve its objective in the occupied valley even if its army deployment raises from 7 lakh to 70 lakh, further adding that Kashmiris have remained committed with their anti-India sentiments from many years.
    Taking a jibe at the Indian government she said that pity on the government which stops its authors from expressing their thoughts and put in jail those who raise their voice against injustices, however, sets free corrupt, rapists and other criminals.
    Recently Indian forces cordoned off more than 20 villages in Shopian district of Occupied Kashmir, Indian media reported, in the wake of a surge in rebel attacks on the occupying forces in recent weeks.
    According to NDTV, more than 3,000 personnel of the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force and Jammu and Kashmir police were involved in the search operation launched early Thursday morning.
    "Over 30 companies of Indian forces have besieged villages in Shopian since 3 am looking for armed fighters," IoK local Faysal tweeted. 
    A few days ago, similar raids were carried out at various places in Kulgam, as well as adjoining Shopian following a tip off about the presence of two people suspected of involvement in the killing of seven people including five Indian policemen, according to a report by the Press Trust of India.
    On April 22, Indian troops martyred two Kashmiri youth in Budgam district of the occupied valley.
    According to Kashmir Media Service, the youth were martyred during a siege and search operation at Hayatpora area of Chadoora in the district.
    Innocent civilians were beaten by Indian troops during the operation, which led to clashes between Indian troops and the youth, locals reported.

    Paris: The perpetrators of the global cyberattack that caused havoc in 150 countries demanded "ransom" money in bitcoins, but experts believe the anonymity that the virtual currency affords is not necessarily impenetrable.
    Bitcoin, heavily-coded electronic tokens that take their name from software first put online in February 2009 by several software designers using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, essentially allow those who possess them to remain anonymous.
    The message that flashed up on hundreds of thousands of screens infected by the WannaCry virus over the last few days demanded payment of $300 (275 euros) in Bitcoin, saying: "Ooops, your files have been encrypted!"
    It warned that if payment was not made within three days the price would double, and if none was received within seven days the locked files would be deleted.
    "Bitcoin is digital cash. The transactions are totally anonymous and non-refundable. However they are totally traceable, Nicolas Debock of London-based Balderton Capital that specialises in virtual currencies said.
    "All the transactions are stored in databases called blockchains. It's anonymous but anyone can monitor a bitcoin address and see how the money moves," Debock said.
    "No-one can take the money off those who hold it, but it is possible to follow in detail the activity on the account."
    That is the problem for investigators, according to Pierre-Antoine Gailly, who compiled a study on bitcoin and other cyber currencies for French state body CESE in 2015.
    "Bitcoin doesn't need a bank so this monetary flow escapes any supervision and any checks," he told AFP. "The accounts don't have a physical address or a bank address and they are not stored centrally -- anonymity comes before anything else."
    'Ransom not the point'
    The extent of the damage caused to computers around the world, the number of victims and the sheer number of companies concerned is likely to push international investigators and national security agencies to investigate the bitcoin address to which any ransom money has been paid.
    Adding to the complexity of tracking the hackers, the holders of bitcoins can use services available on the so-called dark web known as "tumblers" which can offer an additional layer of anonymity.
    "The tumbler divides the bitcoin amounts into thousands of tiny pieces, spreads them around to millions of different addresses and carries out lots of transactions," said Manuel Valente, the manager of a Bitcoin-selling service in Paris.
    "Within a week, all of the bitcoins can be put on a new address with the aim of covering (the holder's) tracks. It is essentially money-laundering of bitcoins. And people offer this kind of service on the dark web."
    Clement Francomme, the director-general of Utocat, a software company that specialises in blockchains, said collecting ransoms was perhaps not the hackers' real aim.
    The idea was perhaps to show the rest of the world that they have pulled off a really, really big coup. With an attack like that, they're going to gain notoriety in the international hacking fraternity.
    "They probably don't have any desire to spend the bitcoins, knowing they are being monitored. Their real aim is to use their reputation to sell other services."
    And Francomme warned: "This team has made a show of force and I suppose there will be another attack before very long."
    European police agency Europol said Tuesday it was too early to say whether North Korea was involved in the massive cyberattack.

    KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah lambasted the federal government and said that Sindh is being treated unfairly while speaking at the Sindh Assembly session on Tuesday.
    “We have paid all our obligations,” he said, adding that government has paid Rs27 billion for clearance of outstanding dues this year. “We even have a clearance letter from HESCO and SESCO.”
    He urged the issue of federal tariff should be resolved. “We won’t allow electricity to be produced from local sources.”
    Moreover, a resolution to end unannounced load-shedding in the province, which was moved by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Khurram Sherzaman, was passed unanimously in the assembly.  
    Speaking on the issue of load-shedding, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional’s leader Nusrat Sahar Abbas remarked that Sindh government has failed to pay the outstanding electricity dues, adding it is impossible for people to get electricity.
    Rejecting the claims of the opposition, CM Murad said that politics should not be done on electricity bills. “Sindh government does not have to pay a single penny to anyone.”
    He further added that it doesn’t matter if federal government plays it part in resolving electricity crises in Sindh. Provincial government will continue to play its part for provision of electricity, he added.
    Other resolutions pertaining to controlling school fees and forming disaster management centres in secondary and higher secondary schools were also passed unanimously.  
    On the other, the members of government and opposition also stressed the need to resolve differences with goods transporters.
