    LE BOURGET: Lockheed Martin has agreed with Tata Advanced Systems Ltd to jointly build F-16 fighter planes equipped with new-generation electronics in India, both companies said on Monday.
    The fighters are of the Block 70 type, "the newest and most technologically advanced F-16 ever", they said.
    "The F-16 Block 70 is ideally suited to meet the Indian Air Force´s single-engine fighter needs and this unmatched US-Indian industry partnership directly supports India´s initiative to develop private aerospace and defense manufacturing capacity in India," said the statement, released on the Paris air show´s opening day.
    The Indian air force does not currently use F-16s, but industry experts say that local production would be a strong argument in favour of the US plane against its rivals, including French company Dassault´s Rafale, in future procurement decisions.
    India in 2016 agreed to buy 36 Rafale combat planes for around eight billion euros.
    Accompanying that deal was a partnership agreement between Dassault and India´s Reliance Group and a promise by Dassault to invest about half of the value of the contract in India.
    The French company recently said it was in talks for India to buy at least 50 more.
    India, the world´s top defence importer, is conducting a $100-billion upgrade of its Soviet-era military hardware, facing border disputes with its northern and western neighbours, China and Pakistan.
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi has moved to reduce India´s reliance on expensive imports and called for the manufacturing of defence equipment locally.
    Modi´s government has raised the limit on foreign investment in the defence sector and encouraged tie-ups between foreign and local companies.
    The announcement comes a week before Modi visits Washington for talks with President Donald Trump, who has been putting pressure on American companies to keep production at home.
    The multi-role F-16 has been in production since 1978, with Lockheed so far producing a total of 4,500 units of the aircraft of which 3,200 are currently in service.
    Tata Advanced Systems Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, already runs manufacturing partnerships with several global players, including Boeing, Airbus and Sikorsky.

    Police said they arrested a man outside London's Paddington Station on Monday but added that the incident was not terrorism-related, a few hours after a van ploughed into worshippers near a mosque in the British capital.
    "Officers have arrested a man outside Paddington for public disorder and possessing an offensive weapon. The incident is not terror related," British Transport Police said in a statement.
    Video footage posted on Twitter showed officers restraining a shirtless man outside the station before taking him away.
    Police have said the earlier attack at the mosque, which injured 10 people, appeared to be a terrorism-incident which would make it the fourth such attack in three months in Britain.

    TEHRAN: Iran has targeted militants in Syria with missiles in retaliation for deadly attacks in Tehran.
    Late Sunday, the elite Revolutionary Guards launched six missiles from western Iran into Syria´s mostly Daesh held Deir Ezzor province, hitting their command base, the Guards said.
    The strike was "revenge" for twin attacks in Tehran on June 7 that killed 17 people in the first Daesh claimed attacks inside Iran, a Guards spokesman added.
    As well as punishing "terrorists", it was intended to show that Iran is capable of projecting military power across the region, officials and experts said.
    Sunday´s strike was the first known missile attack launched from Iran into foreign territory since the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88.

    "The missile attacks were only a small part of Iran´s punitive power against terrorists and enemies," Guards spokesman General Ramezan Sharif said Monday.
    "International and regional supporters of the terrorists must realise the warning message of the missile operation."
    Iran has long accused the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia of backing "terrorists".
    US President Donald Trump meanwhile accuses Iran of backing terrorism, a charge it denies and has threatened to tear up a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers.

    HEREFORD: Police in West Midlands have arrested a man with knives and an axe near an Army Reserve centre, reported the BBC.
    The 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday night.
    Police officials said there was nothing to indicate that there was a threat to the army centre and was not related to the terror attack in Finsbury Park, London.
    The man?s motives are not yet known and he is in custody, BBC quoted police officials as saying.
    ?On identifying the man our officers took prompt action to contain the threat and take him into custody,? said Asst Ch Con Martin Evans of West Mercia Police.
    He added that an "extremely sensitive investigation" was being carried out and added that additional police patrols would take place in the town to safeguard the citizens.

    VIRGINIA: A 17-year-old American Muslim girl was beaten and abducted after leaving a mosque in Virginia on Sunday by a man who police later arrested on suspicion of murder after her body was found dumped in a pond, authorities said.
    The attack spurred an outpouring of grief and horror in a Muslim community that has been gathering to pray at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society mosque about 30 miles outside Washington in observance of the last 10 days of Ramadan.
    The attack happened early on Sunday after the victim and several friends walking outside the mosque got into a dispute with a motorist in the community of Sterling, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a statement.
    At one point, the motorist got out of his car and assaulted the girl, police said.
    The teen was reported missing by her friends who scattered during the attack and could not find her afterwards, touching off an hours-long search by authorities in Fairfax and Loudoun counties.
    At around 3pm, the remains of a female believed to be the teen victim were found in a pond in Sterling, police said.
    During the search for the missing teen, authorities stopped a motorist "driving suspiciously in the area" and arrested the driver, later identified as identified as Darwin Martinez Torres, 22.
    Police obtained a murder warrant that charges Torres for her death, the Fairfax County Police Department said.
    A police spokeswoman told reporters the attack followed some sort of dispute between the man and the girls, and authorities had not ruled out hate as a motivation for the attack.
    The number of anti-Muslim bias incidents in the United States jumped 57 percent in 2016 to 2,213, up from 1,409 in 2015, the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group said in a report last month.
    While the group had been seeing a rise in anti-Muslim incidents prior to Donald Trump's stunning rise in last year's presidential primaries and November election victory, it said the acceleration in bias incidents was due in part to Trump's focus on militant groups and anti-immigrant rhetoric.
    In an incident in London on Monday, a van ploughed into worshippers leaving a mosque, killing at least one person and injuring several in what Britain's largest Muslim organisation said was a deliberate act of Islamophobia.
    Isra Chaker, a person who said in a Facebook post that she was close to a family friend of the victim in the Virginia incident, said the driver came out with a baseball bat and began swinging it at the girls, Chaker said.
    "She then went missing (presumably kidnapped/moved by the suspect) and was found dead this afternoon," Chaker said.
    An online fundraiser for the girl's family had raised $61,606 by Sunday evening.
    Police said a medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to confirm the victim's identity and cause of death, though detectives believe the body found in the pond was the missing girl.

    Photo: File Paris police on Monday said they were dealing with an incident on the Champs Elysees in the city centre as a Reuters witness saw officers cordon off an area near the avenue and close to the presidential Elysee palace.
    The announcement on a police Twitter account advised the public to avoid the area, and came after people took to social media to report that a car had caught fire in the area.

    WASHINGTON: Six top health advisors have resigned from Donald Trump´s advisory council on HIV/AIDS, complaining that the US president doesn´t really care about combatting the illness.
    In a letter published Friday in Newsweek, Scott Schoettes said the Trump administration has "no strategy" on AIDS and that he and his five colleagues will be more effective advocating for change from the outside.
    Schoettes, counsel and HIV project director at Lambda Legal, resigned Tuesday from the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, along with Lucy Bradley-Springer, Gina Brown, Ulysses Burley III, Michelle Ogle and Grissel Granados.
    The council can have up to 25 members.
    "The Trump administration has no strategy to address the on-going HIV/AIDS epidemic, seeks zero input from experts to formulate HIV policy, and -- most concerning -- pushes legislation that will harm people living with HIV and halt or reverse important gains made in the fight against this disease," Schoettes wrote.
    "If we do not ensure that US leadership at the executive and legislative levels are informed by experience and expertise, real people will be hurt and some will even die," he said.
    "Because we do not believe the Trump administration is listening to -- or cares -- about the communities we serve as members of PACHA, we have decided it is time to step down."
    PACHA, which was created in 1995, includes public health officials, researchers, health care providers, faith leavers, HIV advocates and people living with HIV. Its helps inform the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which was last revised in 2015.
    Schoettes noted that Trump failed to appoint a head of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, a senior advisory position, and took down the Office of National AIDS Policy website the very day he took office -- on January 20 -- and has yet to replace it.
    He also stressed that changes Trump and his fellow Republicans in Congress are seeking to the sweeping health care reform initiated by former president Barack Obama would be "extremely harmful" to people living with HIV or AIDS.
    Schoettes cited data showing that only 40 percent of people living with HIV in the United States can access life-saving medications.

    Bollywood stars Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor were one of the most adorable couples of B-town, however, much similar to the short-lived love stories of the world of glitz and glamour, the two called it quits in 2016.

    The two powerhouse performers, who had created an enviable chemistry in ?Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani?, won?t be working together after their to-be-released film, ?Jagga Jasoos?.
    Despite their differences, the two are endlessly trying to promote their latest film. At a promotional event, Katrina was asked if she would like to work with Ranbir.
    ?It's very difficult. People now have proof that he is a very trying and testing person. Ranbir has also gestured [to me] to not work on a film together. It will never happen again,? Katrina responded to the query.
    When Rabir was expected to reply to the question as well, the actor preferred not to respond.
    It is said that the two have their schedules full and filming dates locked for the next few years. Ranbir is going to star in Sanjay Dutt biopic and another film ?Dragon?.
    Katrina is preoccupied with ?Tiger Zinda Hai? and ?Thugs of Hindostan?, with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, respectively.

    Ram Nath Kovind, 71, is likely to become the second Dalit to be India´s head of state NEW DELHI: India´s ruling party on Monday named a lawyer from the lowest Dalit caste as its candidate for president, a move seen as an attempt to reach out to the marginalised community.
    Ram Nath Kovind, 71, is likely to take up the largely ceremonial post when the term of Pranab Mukherjee ends next month, becoming the second Dalit to be India´s head of state.
    The president is voted in by an electoral college comprised of federal and state lawmakers, and the ruling ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is thought to have the support it needs to push its candidate through.
    "Ram Nath Kovind has always fought for the betterment of the Dalits and other backward castes," BJP chief Amit Shah said at a press conference to announce the party´s candidate.
    "The BJP ... hopes that a person born in a poor family of low-caste Dalit community will be a consensus candidate for the president´s post."
    Kovind´s nomination follows huge protests last year by members of the historically marginalised Dalit community, who make up around 17 percent of India´s population.
    The protests broke out after four young Dalits were stripped naked and publicly flogged after being falsely accused of killing a cow, an animal Hindus consider sacred.
    The outrage was compounded by the savage beating of a pregnant woman and her husband after they refused to allow higher-caste men to graze cattle on their land.
    The BJP has traditionally enjoyed the support of upper-caste Hindus but has been wooing low-caste voters to broaden its nationwide appeal.
    Kovind, a two-time parliamentarian and current governor of the eastern state of Bihar, is a lifelong supporter of the Hindu nationalist BJP and a relative unknown in Indian politics.
    He has also headed groups that work to improve the conditions of Dalits, previously known as untouchables, who lie at the bottom of India´s deeply entrenched social hierarchy.
    If elected, he will be India´s second Dalit president after K R Narayanan, who served from 1997 to 2002.
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that Kovind would "make an exceptional president" and "continue to be a strong voice for the poor, downtrodden and marginalised".
    The opposition, led by the Congress Party, will reportedly meet on Thursday to decide whether to name a separate candidate or support Kovind.
    But political observers said it could be difficult for rival parties to oppose a Dalit candidate.
    "Modi and Shah have shrewdly ensured that they cause a strategic split in the opposition camp while getting an ideological fellow traveller into Rashtrapati Bhavan," wrote journalist Swati Chaturvedi on the NDTV news website, referring to the president´s official residence.
    "If elected, Kovind will ensure that Modi has a friend in Rashtrapati Bhavan."
    India´s prime minister wields most of the executive power, but the president can send back some parliamentary bills for reconsideration and also plays a guiding role in the process of forming governments.

    DAMASCUS: A US warplane shot down a Syrian army jet on Sunday in the southern Raqqa countryside, with Washington saying the jet had dropped bombs near US-backed forces and Damascus saying the plane was downed while flying a mission against Daesh militants.
    A Syrian army statement released on Syrian state television said the plane crashed and the pilot was missing in the first such downing of a Syrian jet by the United States since the start of the conflict in 2011.
    The army statement said it took place on Sunday afternoon near a village called Rasafah.
    The "flagrant attack was an attempt to undermine the efforts of the army as the only effective force capable with its allies ... in fighting terrorism across its territory," the Syrian army said.
    "This comes at a time when the Syrian army and its allies were making clear advances in fighting the Daesh terrorist group," it added.
    The US Central Command later issued a statement saying the Syrian plane was downed "in collective self-defense of Coalition-partnered forces," identified as fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near Tabqah.
    It said that "pro-Syrian regime forces" had earlier attacked an SDF-held town south of Tabqa and wounded a number of fighters, driving them from the town.
    Coalition aircraft in a show of force stopped the initial advance. When a Syrian army SU-22 jet later dropped bombs near the US-backed forces, it was immediately shot down by a US F/A-18E Super Hornet, the statement said.
    Before it downed the plane, the coalition had "contacted its Russian counterparts by telephone via an established "de-confliction line" to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing."
    The coalition does "not seek to fight the Syrian regime, Russian or pro-regime forces" but would not "hesitate to defend itself or its "partnered forces from any threat," the statement said.
    The US-led coalition has in recent weeks escalated its aerial bombing campaign in northern Syria and Raqqa province. U.S.-backed forces have encircled the city of Raqqa and captured several districts from the militants.
    The Syrian army, which has been taking territory from retreating Daesh militants in the eastern Aleppo countryside, has moved into Raqqa province and seized back some oil fields and villages that had been under the militants' control for almost three years.
    An SDF official told Reuters the Syrian army had been engaged in skirmishes in recent days with US-backed forces near the town of Maskaneh close to the borders of Raqqa province, much of which is now held by US-backed groups fighting Daesh.
    The Syrian army backed by Iranian-backed militias has also been in competition in southeastern Syria with US-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) militants who are also trying to recapture territory from Daesh.
    On several occasions in recent weeks, warplanes of the US-led coalition have also struck pro-government forces to prevent them advancing from a US-controlled garrison in southeastern Syria at a spot where the country's borders join with Iraq and Jordan.
    Washington also described those strikes as self-defense.

    SIALKOT: Three sisters between the ages of three and six died on Monday after eating unhygienic chaat last night in the Neka Pura area of the city.
    The parents said that the entire family fell ill after eating chat brought from a vendor. Police said that the condition of the minors, Zoya, Aina and Ayat, deteriorated on Sunday night, after which they were brought to the Government Sardar Begum Hospital.
    According to the police, two people, including the vendor, have been arrested and further action will be taken after the postmortem report is out.

    Pakistan`s skipper Sarfraz Ahmed is named as captain of 'Team of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017' on Monday.  
    The side was selected by a jury of cricket experts, which included former captains Michael Atherton of England, India?s Sourav Ganguly, Ramiz Raja of Pakistan as well as Lawrence Booth (Editor, Wisden Almanack and cricket writer, The Mail) and Julian Guyer (cricket correspondent, Agence France-Presse), with ICC General Manager ? Cricket, Geoff Allardice, as chairman.

    The jury was tasked with picking a balanced side on the basis of performances in the tournament. Statistics were used, but were not the sole basis for selection.
    The side includes four Pakistanis, three Indians, three Englishmen and one Bangladeshi, with Kane Williamson of New Zealand as 12th man.
    The Team of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 (in batting order) is:

    Dhawan and Hassan had already won the Golden Bat and Gold Ball trophies for finishing as the most successful batsman and bowler, respectively, while Tamim was selected after driving Bangladesh to its maiden semi-final in a major ICC event.

    Pakistan?s Fakhar Zaman was picked as Dhawan?s opening partner after he aggregated 252 runs in four matches at a strike-rate of 113, following scores of 31 against South Africa, 50 against Sri Lanka, 57 against England in the semi-final and 114 against India in the final.
    Joe Root was rewarded for his 258 runs in the tournament, while Ben Stokes was selected as an all-rounder following his aggregate of 184 runs and three wickets.
    Fast bowlers Junaid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hassan shared 28 wickets between them in the tournament, while wrist-spinner Rashid finished with seven wickets with an economy rate of 4.73.
    Sarfraz was chosen as the captain following his inspirational leadership during the 18-day tournament that was the cornerstone of his team?s 180-run victory over India in front of a full house. Pakistan had started disastrously when it suffered a 124-run thrashing at the hands of India, before it bounced back to defeat South Africa by 19 runs, Sri Lanka by three wickets and England in the semi-final by eight wickets.
    Fast bowlers Junaid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hassan shared 28 wickets between them in the tournament.

    Sarfraz also won the Player of the Match award in the match against Sri Lanka when Pakistan, chasing 237 runs for victory, had slipped from 74 for one to 162 for seven. Sarfraz, who came out to bat at number six with the scoreboard reading 110 for four, returned unbeaten on 61 from 79 balls with five fours.
    Pakistan had entered the tournament ranked eighth on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, but courtesy its victories against higher-ranked sides, finished in sixth place, which means it now looks well set to qualify automatically for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
    ?To be appointed as captain of the Team of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, which includes some of the finest and most attractive cricketers of this generation, is the perfect icing on the cake,? remarked Sarfraz. 
    ?But I am more happy and delighted for players like Fakhar Zaman and Hassan Ali, who impressed their peers through their talent and performances, and found their way in the side. These two lads, plus Shadab Khan, are the future of Pakistan cricket and I sincerely hope they will only go in the upward direction from here.
    ?The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 has been a fairytale journey for the Pakistan cricket team. The event showed the team?s grit and ability to bounce back solidly when the chips are down.     Pakistan?s historic win over India in Champions Trophy finale has not only lifted the team to number six position but also boosted the rankings of the young match-winning heroes.

    Bowling superstar Hasan Ali, who took home the Golden Ball award for the most wickets (13) in the tournament, has catapulted to number seven spot in the latest ICC ODI bowlers rankings.
    The 23-year-old pacer, who was also named Player of the Tournament, jumped 12 positions to reach the seventh spot.
    Batting sensation Fakhar Zaman, who thrashed Indian bowling with his quickfire hundred in the finale, has broken into the Top 100 batsmen for the first time after just four ODIs to his name.
    Fakhar?s Player of the Match effort of 114 in the final and 57 in the semifinal helped him gain 58 positions to reach 97th rank.
    Mohammad Amir, whose pace and swing overpowered Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan and broke the back of Indian batting, has climbed 16 slots to reach 21st place, while Junaid Khan has moved up nine places to 47th position.
    Babar Azam has reached a career-best fifth position after moving up three positions with scores of 46 in the final and 30 not out in the semifinal. Mohammad Hafeez has gained two slots to reach 20th rank while opener Azhar Ali has moved up 11 slots to 31st position.

    KARACHI: The main accused in the case in which sewer cleaner Irfan Maseeh died due to alleged negligence of the doctors of Civil Hospital Umerkot has been exonerated of any responsibility by the Health department.
    Masih was brought to the hospital early this month in a critical condition but Dr Yousuf refused to cover his sludge-covered body, saying ?he would not touch Irfan's dirty body until it was cleaned.? the deceased's brother Pervaiz Maseeh had told Geo.tv.

    Irfan had dived down to clean a manhole on June 1 when he fell unconscious after inhaling poisonous gases trapped inside, Pervaiz Maseeh had told Geo News.
    Pervaiz said that one after another two more men jumped inside to save those trapped, but all fell unconscious due to the same reason.
    Umerkot police had told Geo.tv on June 2 that the accused Dr Jaam Kunbhar has been arrested while raids were being conducted to arrest the other two doctors ?Dr Yousuf and Dr Allah Dad Rathore? involved in the incident.
    Irfan Maseeh's family alleges that the doctor's negligent response to the emergency situation and lack of facilities at the hospital left him to succumb to death.
    The Health department, however, in its investigation report presented to higher authorities said that Masih had expired before he was brought to the hospital, sources told Geo News. The report instead held responsible the insufficient security measures employed by the municipality staff, in which one person was killed and three were severely injured.
    The report did not find any of the doctors responsible for the incident and said that they fully attended to the injured in the incident.

    RAWALPINDI: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor has extended a warm welcome to Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho and his team ahead of their Pakistan visit, scheduled for July.
    In a Twitter post on Monday, the DG ISPR said, ?We welcome @10Ronaldinho and his team to Pakistan 6-8 Jul 17 in coord with @leisureleaguepk. Pakistan is a peace and sports loving country.?
    Ronaldinho and seven other top footballers, including Roberto Carlos and John Terry, will be visiting Pakistan for exhibition matches in Karachi and Lahore. They will also meet with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa during their visit.

    KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will soon announce a development package for Karachi, informed Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair said on Monday.
    On a visit to the Lyari Expressway, the governor said development work on the northern track of the highway is under way, adding that ?the government is working to provide quick and efficient services to the residents of Karachi.?
    Earlier, officials of the Frontier Works Organisation ? who are working on the project ?gave a briefing to the governor on the work under way on the northern part of the track.
    Talking to the media, the governor directed that the encroachments on the northern track to be removed and ordered that it should be opened for the public by October.
    ?Good and efficient transport facilities are a right of Karachi?s residents and they should not be deprived of them,? he added.

    QUETTA: A mortar shell fired from Iran landed in the Prom area of Panjgur District in Balochistan early Sunday morning.
    Officials of the district administration said on Monday that no loss of life or damage was reported in the incident.
    They informed that a strong protest has been lodged with the Iranian border officials, and that a flag-meeting has been called on Tuesday (tomorrow) to resolve the matter as this is the third such violation in recent weeks.

    On May 27, a man was killed in mortar shelling from the Iranian side of the border in Panjgur.
    The district commissioner had informed that a mortar shell landed on a vehicle, instantly killing one man inside and causing extensive damage nearby.
    A ?strong protest? as well as a ?flag meeting? was called then too.
    A week prior to that, five mortar shells fired from Iran landed in the Chaghai area of the province. No casualties were reported in the incident.

Photo: AFP SHANGHAI: A 21-year-old student walked around her campus in China using invaluable skills she learned in class: Holding a selfie stick aloft, she livestreamed her random thoughts and blew kisses at her phone.

    Jiang Mengna is majoring in "modelling and etiquette" at Yiwu Industrial and Commercial College near Shanghai, aspiring to join the growing ranks of young Chinese cashing in on internet stardom.
    Hordes of Chinese millennials are speaking directly to the country´s 700 million smartphone users, streaming their lives to lucrative effect, fronting brands and launching businesses.
    They are known as "wanghong" -- literally hot on the web -- and they now represent an industry worth billions and so big it even has its own university curriculum.
    At Yiwu Industrial and Commercial College, the classrooms for Jiang and the other 33 mostly female students are typically dance studios, catwalks strafed by flashing lights, and bustling makeup rooms.
    The skills taught include dressing fashionably, applying make-up, performing on camera, and knowing various luxury brands.
    "I like dressing myself up really pretty and take pictures. I feel like this major really suits me," Jiang said.
    She spent 30 minutes at lunch musing about her day to her internet audience.
    She was rewarded with a quick 60 yuan in "virtual gifts" -- emoticons with small digital values that comprise the main income for many aspiring wanghong, at least until they go viral.
    "The requests and demands for our major are rising because the e-commerce industry is developing rapidly," said Hou Xiaonan, a dance teacher.
    Wang Xin, 20, switched from accounting to a major in wanghong.
    "I have always had an idea, a dream to be on stage with the lights on me and the crowd watching me," Wang said.
    Nobodies behind $7.7bn industry
    The students are trying to follow in the footsteps of people like Wang Houhou, a self-described shopaholic, and her friend Wang Ruhan.
    When they began posting tips on China´s social media about good fashion and where to find it last year, the pair had no idea that their new hobby would make them money.
    But soon enough, the Shanghai-based duo´s posts and videos won hundreds of thousands of viewers, and retailers followed, vying for their endorsements.
    Like other wanghong, they are now leveraging their cyber-fame with an e-commerce fashion business which they launched earlier this month.
    "I would just find a very interesting item that I would wear, and I would take weird photos of it and post it on the blog, and people really go and buy this stuff," Wang Houhou said, almost in disbelief.
    Internet consultancy Analysys International estimated China´s wanghong industry was worth 53 billion yuan ($7.7 billion) last year and would double by 2018.
    "A nobody can suddenly become prominent and average people can become celebrities," said Yuan Guobao, author of "The Wanghong Economy."
    A wanghong is born
    The patron saint of wanghong is Shanghai´s Jiang Yilei, 30, a graduate of a top China drama academy whose low-budget comedic video rants on everything from urban life to relationships went viral last year.
    "Papi Jiang", as she is known, now has 23 million followers and product endorsements including New Balance footwear and luxury watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre.
    Wanghong content is typically bland day-in-the-life livestreaming that earns small digital monetary gifts from fans.
    But many wanghong are profoundly impacting China´s bustling e-commerce as retail "influencers", said Zhang Yi, head of mobile-internet consultancy iiMedia Research Group.
    The phenomenon provides businesses with a powerful new, highly visual, promotional alternative and is eating into the business of Chinese internet goliath Baidu, which dominates online advertising.
    "Now someone will wear (the product), try it, use it, and persuade you to buy it," said Zhang, who estimates wanghong now influence up to 20 percent of online purchases.
    "It´s a booming business. Wanghong have their own followers who can easily be made consumers of the brands they recommend."
    New incubator companies, formed to find and groom wanghong, are cashing in, such as Ruhan Holdings, which last year drew 300 million yuan in investment from e-commerce leader Alibaba.
    Wang Houhou returned from studying English literature at a US university last year to discover that attractive fashions she saw overseas were hard to find at home.
    Young Chinese women lapped up her playful posts about navigating Taobao, China´s Amazon, and other e-commerce platforms, and clothing brands began paying her and Wang Ruhan to showcase their items.
    "If we hadn´t started the blog, I would probably be in investment or finance," said Wang Ruhan, 24, who never expected to be an entrepreneur so early in her life.
    "We have to do this without much experience and just figure out the right way to do it."
    She spoke as they prepared for the launch in Wang Ruhan´s Shanghai apartment, with Ruhan dressing amateur models in various outfits and Houhou snapping pictures as music played and mist from a clothes steamer filled the air.

    Photo: AFP MOSUL: Iraqi authorities have dropped leaflets over Mosul warning civilians to stay inside and are telling insurgents to "surrender or die" after launching an assault to retake the Old City.
    Iraqi forces launched an assault on Sunday to recapture the Old City, the last district of Mosul still held by Daesh after a months-long offensive.
    Commanders say Daesh fighters are putting up fierce resistance and there are concerns for the more than 100,000 civilians believed to remain inside the Old City.
    Late on Sunday, Iraqi forces dropped nearly 500,000 leaflets over the city, warning that they "have started attacking from all directions".
    The leaflets calls on civilians to "stay away from open spaces and... to exploit any opportunity that arises during the fighting" to escape.
    Iraqi forces have also stationed Humvees by the Grand Mosque on the eastern side of Mosul, which faces the Old City and is mounted with speakers.
    The loudspeakers have been blaring messages to civilians, saying Iraqi forces "are about to end your suffering".
    Messages were also being broadcast to Daesh fighters, telling them: "You have only this choice: surrender or die".
    The push into Mosul´s Old City -- a densely populated warren of narrow alleyways on the western side of Iraq´s second city -- marks the culmination of a months-long campaign by Iraqi forces to retake Daesh´s last major urban stronghold in the country.
    The loss of Mosul would mark the effective end of the Iraqi portion of the cross-border "caliphate" Daesh declared in the summer of 2014 after seizing large parts of Iraq and neighbouring Syria.

    Photo: File  MUMBAI: An Indian woman gave birth to a baby boy on an international commercial flight as it flew at 35,000 feet, the airline said on Monday.

    The unnamed woman, in her 20s, went into premature labour on Sunday´s Jet Airways flight between Damman in Saudi Arabia and Kochi in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
    "The guest delivered a baby boy at 35,000 feet," Jet Airways said in a statement, adding that a paramedic on board and airline staff helped with the delivery.
    The Boeing 737 flight, which had 162 passengers on board, was diverted to Mumbai where the woman and her newborn were rushed to a hospital near the airport.
    An official at Mumbai´s Holy Spirit hospital told AFP on Monday that both the mother and baby boy were doing well.
    The woman was believed to have been around 32 weeks pregnant when she gave birth.
    Jet Airways said it was the first time a baby had been born on one of its flights and that it had given him free travel for life on the airline.
    In August last year, a woman gave birth on a flight from the United Arab Emirates to the Philippines.
    The plane made an emergency landing in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad so the mother and newborn could receive medical attention before continuing their journey to Manila.

Photo: Reuters WISCONSIN: The winds of change were blowing at the US Open on Sunday as Brooks Koepka sailed to a four-stroke victory at Erin Hills, making it the seventh consecutive major that has crowned a first-time winner.

    A changing of golf's old guard has been underway for some time but the 117th US Open signaled that it can be considered complete with neither Phil Mickelson and/or Tiger Woods teeing up at major for the first time since the 1994 US Masters.
    Fans now run to see Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, the youth movement having firmly taken hold.
    Koepka, South Korea's Kim Si-woo, Japan's Hideki Matusyama, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Americans Brian Harman and Rickie Fowler were the names battling for major glory on Sunday, rather than the likes of Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink and Ernie Els.
    Sentiment and nostalgia will always find a place on the leaderboard, as 37-year-old Sergio Garcia showed by notching his first major win at the Masters in April, while 50-year-old Wisconsin-native Steve Stricker provided an emotional touchstone in an Erin Hills swan-song.
    But the year's second major belonged to the young guns who tackled the longest layout ever for a US Open.
    Koepka, who looks as if he would be at home in a National Football League huddle, held firm against buffeting winds and crushing pressure to claim a sensational four-shot victory over Harman and Matsuyama.
    The muscular American, who started the day one back of the lead, tamed his nerves and a wind-whipped course, carding six birdies, including two to kick-start his round, against a single bogey for a five-under 67.
    Koepka's winning total of 16-under equals the lowest score to par for a US Open, matching Rory McIlroy's victory at Congressional in 2011 on a par-71 layout.

    But Koepka would not be blown off course producing a near-flawless final round, subduing the winds with a mix of power and precision.
    "Obviously the wind picked up and I felt like that played right into my hand," said Koepka, who considers himself a good ball-striker and good putter.
    ?And I felt confident all week, so to feel as confident as I did on a Sunday of a major and coming down the stretch was pretty neat."
    One of golf's biggest hitters, the 27-year-old also demonstrated a killer instinct along with a deft touch with the putter, rolling in a monster 41-foot birdie putt at the eighth.
    When Matsuyama, at number four the highest ranked player to make the cut, delivered the round of the day a six-under 66 to get within one of the lead, a rampaging Koepka countered with golf's version of the knockout punch, clinching victory in ruthless style by registering three straight birdies from the 14th.
    Harman, level with Koepka with six to play and without a bogey on the back nine all week, took his first at the 12th after his tee shot ended up in the belt-high fescue and followed that up with another at the 13th.
    The miscues put Koepka alone back on top of the leaderboard, a perch from which he would not be removed.
    "It hasn't sunk in, obviously, yet, and probably won't for a few days," said Koepka. "That's probably one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and to do it on Father's Day it's pretty neat.
    "I didn't exactly get my dad a card, so this works."

    In a petition submitted in the apex court on Monday, Dr Asim, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Karachi Division president and close aide of former president Asif Ali Zardari, contended that he needs immediate medical treatment abroad.
    In the petition, filed by PPP?s Sardar Latif Khosa, it is stated that anything can happen in case Dr Asim is not allowed to travel abroad.
    There should be no restriction on Dr Asim?s movement, and his passport should be returned to him, reads the petition.
    The petition called for the relevant authority to return Dr Asim?s passport to him.
    On June 5, the SHC ruled to continue the inclusion of Dr Asim?s name in the ECL.
    Dr Asim ? out on bail in cases of corruption and terrorism ? had requested the court to allow him to travel out of the country for back surgery.

    Dr Asim ? a former federal minister ? faces trial in two cases of alleged corruption of over Rs450 billion and another of allegedly facilitating and treating terrorists at his medical facility ? Dr Ziauddin Hospital.
    He was released from the sub-jail at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in Karachi on March 31 this year after obtaining bail in all the cases lodged against him. He was initially arrested by the Rangers in August 2015 and then transferred into police custody.
