    RAWALPINDI: Indian forces on Saturday resorted to unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC), which resulted in martyrdom of an elderly man, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

    Indian troops resorted to firing in Chirikot sector along the LoC, in fresh violation of the ceasefire agreement, the ISPR said in a statement.
    It resulted in martyrdom of 70-year-old Shabbir Khan in Polas village, Azad Kashmir, it read.
    This was the second ceasefire violation committed by Indian forces in less than a week.
    However, Pakistani soldiers gave matching response to Indian aggression, completely silencing the enemy guns, the statement added.

    Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told Qatar on Saturday of its concern over Arab nations cutting ties with the Gulf state and called for talks to solve the crisis.
    "As a matter of policy we do not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries or their bilateral relations with each other. But it does not give us joy when relations between our partners deteriorate," Lavrov told Qatar's foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani at talks in Moscow.
    The Arab world's biggest powers, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, severed diplomatic relations with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of support for militants and Iran.
    Lavrov said Moscow was ready to act "with the consent and the interest of the parties involved" to help resolve the diplomatic row.
    "We call for all contradictions to be resolved at the negotiation table through a mutually respectful dialogue," Lavrov said, adding Arab states should unite to effectively fight terrorism.
    Sheikh Mohammed said Qatar was committed to solving the issue via a dialogue and that he considered the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf as the most appropriate format for such talks.

    A visiting ship of PLAN docked at Karachi harbour. -Pakistan Navy KARACHI: Three warships of the Peoples Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) arrived in Karachi port on Saturday for a goodwill and training visit, said a statement released by the Pakistan Navy.
    The PLAN ships, Chang Chun, Jing Zhou and Chao Hu are part of a task group commanded by Deputy Commander East Sea Fleet Rear Admiral Shen Hao.
    The statement added the visiting task group will also hold a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Pakistan Navy ships to enhance interoperability between the two navies.
    The men and officers of the visiting ships are also expected to hold professional discussions and interactions with their compatriots from the PN on subjects of mutual interest, added the statement released.
    Chinese officials welcoming the PLAN ships. -Pakistan Navy The visiting crews will take part in operational training activities, joint interactive sessions and table top discussions on professional topics. Official calls on senior PN officers and civilian dignitaries along with social events are also planned as part of the visit.
    Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah also visited the ships of the Chinese flotilla and was presented an honour guard by a contingent of PLAN sailors.
    ?Pak-China friendship is highly valued and the continued cooperation between them has proven to be a source of strength for both the countries,? said the naval chief.
    He added that the visit is ?expected to enhance interoperability and maritime collaboration between the two navies?.

    ISLAMABAD: The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) submitted an application before the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Saturday outlining difficulties being faced by the team in implementing the apex court?s orders.
    The sealed application from Wajid Zia, the head of the JIT, was submitted by JIT staff to the Supreme Court registrar. 
    Earlier on the 7th of June the apex court?s Panama case implementation bench had directed Zia to submit an application outlining hurdles and difficulties and interference being faced by the JIT. 
    The JIT spent Saturday in meetings at the Federal Judicial Academy ahead of Monday's appearance when the JIT will submit an interim report before Supreme Court apprising the bench regarding findings in light of questions posed to Hasan and Hussain Nawaz, the prime minister's sons. 
    On Friday, the prime minister's eldest son appeared before the JIT for the fifth time. While speaking to the media after the session, Hussain said he would appear again if summoned. 

    However, the premier's son believed he would not be called by the JIT anytime soon. ?Looking at the type of questions asked, I don?t think I will be summoned again by the JIT in the near future,? he said.

    FAISALABAD: State Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali said on Saturday that no minus-Nawaz formula is acceptable.
    ?Listen to me clearly, we will not let any minus-Nawaz formula work in Pakistan," Abid Sher Ali told reporters. "The minus-Nawaz formula was not acceptable before nor will it be acceptable in the future.?
    According to the state minister, despite being offered, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif did not take legal cover.
    ?Hasan and Hussain Nawaz appeared before the JIT, despite having reservations.?
    Abid Sher Ali claimed that the JIT picture of Hussain Nawaz had been leaked by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The minister also alleged that PTI Chairperson Imran Khan had hatched a conspiracy to put pressure on state institutions, adding that neither Imran nor his elders could force a resignation from Nawaz.
    The state minister said that Imran and Pakistan Peoples Party Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari were two sides of the same coin. Referring to a statement by Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif calling for accountability, Abid Sher Ali said: ?Shehbaz Sharif?s statement called for accountability, over which that criminal Asif Ali Zardari started crying. Some linemen cry daily in the assembly. These people who have committed crimes call for accountability. ?And that dry-cleaner Imran Khan is now standing alongside those who benefitted from the National Reconciliation Ordinance and National Accountability Bureau.?

    MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistani troops pledged on Saturday that no Indian misadventure shall go without a befitting response, according to Inter Services Public Relations.
    The troops took the pledge during a visit of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa along the Line of Control (LoC) in Muzaffarabad Sector.
    ?Troops unreservedly shared with COAS their feelings about Indian atrocities and CFVs targeting innocent civilians and pledged that no Indian misadventure will go without a befitting response,? according to statement issued by army?s media cell.
    COAS was given a detailed briefing by the local commander on the operational situation, Indian Cease Fire violation and response by Pakistani troops.
    COAS appreciated their state of operational readiness, exemplary high morale and motivation for the fulfillment of assigned mission
    He was also briefed on the ongoing communication infrastructure development by Frontier Works Organization.
    Army shall continue to play its role in nation building projects, said COAS at the occasion.
    We are aware of defence and security challenges being faced by the country, he said, adding ?We are capable of defeating all threats ?irrespective of the front??.
    COAS also hailed Kashmiris on both sides of the LOC for their determination against Indian brutalities and reiterated that Pakistan shall continue its support for right of self-determination to our Kashmiris brothers in Indian Occupied Kashmir.

Photo: AFP/file MARAWI: Thirteen Philippine marines have been killed in fresh gunbattles with militants who have overrun parts of a southern city, a military spokesperson said Saturday, in a dramatic surge in the toll from two weeks of fierce fighting.
    Philippine troops are struggling to dislodge hundreds of fighters, who rampaged through the city of Marawi on May 23 flying black flags of the Daesh group, and have used bomb-proof tunnels, anti-tank weapons and human shields to fortify their positions.
    Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera said the military was verifying the number of troops wounded in Friday´s ferocious, sometimes house-to-house gun battles with the militants.
    "We are saddened with the result... we have fatalities on the government side. We have incurred 13 killed in action," Herrera said at a news conference in Marawi.
    The fresh casualties brought to 58 the number of government troops killed in the fighting, Herrera said.
    At least 138 militants and 20 civilians have also been killed, the government said.
    The militants have so far withstood more than two weeks air and ground assaults by security forces, although the military said they occupy only around 10 percent of the city.

    Facing demands to quit after her electoral gamble failed, May on Friday scheduled an early weekend meeting of her governing circle in an apparent bid to reassert authority and project stability.
    But the firestorm of criticism continued unabated early Saturday after May announced she would keep her ministerial team unchanged and planned to stay in power with the aid of a small Northern Irish party.
    Media commentators agreed she had been badly damaged, and some predicted she and her strategy for Brexit could struggle to survive.
    "May fights to remain PM," the Daily Telegraph headlined. "Tories turn on Theresa," said the pro-conservative Daily Mail. The Times wrote: "May stares into the abyss." The tabloid Sun said succinctly: "She´s had her chips."
    May was interior minister for six years before rising to premier in the political chaos that following last June´s Brexit referendum.
    She has vowed to steer Britain unerringly out of the European Union, unwinding a complex economic and institutional relationship that has developed over 44 years.
    After inheriting a 17-seat overall majority in the House of Commons, May in April announced a snap election three years ahead of time, declaring she needed a stronger hand in the Brexit haggle.
    That move, by a vicar´s daughter who styled herself as pragmatic and risk-averse, stunned the country.
    May was initially forecast to be on course for a landslide.
    But cracks in her campaign-trail performance began to show, and widened with a bad tactical misstep she made on health care for the elderly.
    Those flaws were skilfully exploited by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, a veteran grassroots activist who hammered away at May as cold and uncaring.
    Polling day on Thursday delivered a slap to May, leaving her eight seats short of the 326-seat mark for an overall majority.
    Help from Ulster party?
    Forced into minority government, May is reaching out to Northern Ireland´s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which won 10 seats, in the hope of forging a working majority.
    But any deal between the two parties has yet to be announced, and details of how they may cooperate remain sketchy.
    "It´s too soon to say what we´re going to do yet. I think we need to see the final make-up of parliament and then we´ll reflect on that," DUP leader Arlene Foster told Radio Ulster late Friday.
    "I certainly think that there will be contact made over the weekend but I think it is too soon to talk about what we´re going to do."
    The DUP is rooted in a hardline form of Protestantism that opposes Ulster´s reunification with the predominantly Catholic Irish Republic.
    It is socially conservative, notably opposing same-*** marriage, and supports Brexit, but opposes a return to a "hard" border between the Irish Republic and the British province.
    Brexit headache
    The inner Irish border is expected to be one of dozens of thorny issues in the Brexit talks.
    The formal parlay, considered by diplomatic veterans as likely to be one of the most daunting negotiations in recent memory, begins on June 19.
    But there is only a two-year timeframe for sealing a deal, under a process unleashed by May herself on March 29 and further delayed by her own election gambit.
    May´s pitch to the eurosceptic rightwing of the Conservative Party has nudged Britain closer to a "hard Brexit," in which it may cut ties with Brussels at the cost of damaging itself economically by losing access to the lucrative single European market, say analysts.
    German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Britain Friday to quickly launch Brexit talks, saying "We are ready for the negotiations. We want to do it quickly, respecting the calendar."
    European Council President Donald Tusk also warned there was "no time to lose" in starting the negotiations.
    "We don´t know when Brexit talks start. We know when they must end. Do your best to avoid a ´no deal´ as result of ´no negotiations´."

    CARDIFF: Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza believes his side can face the future with renewed confidence even if they are denied a semifinal place at the Champions Trophy.
    The Tigers gave themselves a shot at last four spot with a stunning five-wicket win over New Zealand in Cardiff on Friday.
    Bangladesh collapsed to 12 for three and were facing a humiliating loss at 33 for four in the 12th over.

    However, the PM landed in Lahore due to bad weather conditions in Islamabad. 
    Before their departure, the PM, accompanied by his wife,  visited Pakistan's stall at Astana's expo centre. Pakistan had set up a green energy stall at the expo.

    Clad in all-black, the immense black-robed figure with a cylindrical container as his mark, Lord Buckethead stood against May in her Maidenhead constituency and was seen greeting people, taking pictures, and generally spreading a happy mood to the public.
    Sadly, Lord Buckethead only managed to score 249 votes ? or 0.4% of the total. Yet, it became the "new Buckethead record".
    But who really is this ?caped crusader??
    Seen standing right next to May and notoriously ?dabbing? for a great shot, the ?intergalactic space lord? has appeared in the political arena twice before; facing off Margaret Thatcher and John Major in 1987 and 1992, respectively.

    Airbus Friday said it expects the market for large passenger planes to more than double in the next 20 years driven by growth from Asian markets.
    Raising its previous forecasts for the next two decades, the European aircraft maker also said a slowdown in orders over the past several months did not signal a drop in the market.
    "The trend is positive," said Airbus chief executive Fabrice Bregier.
    Airbus last week had warned it expects slow orders this year and perhaps next year, too, but said it was a normal part of the business cycle.
    The planemaker predicts the need for 35,000 new planes worth $5.3 trillion over the next two decades, an increase from last year's estimates.
    "Air travel is remarkably resilient to external shocks and doubles every 15 years," said its chief operating officer for customer relations, John Leahy.
    "Asia Pacific continues to be an engine for growth, with domestic China to become the world's largest market."
    The numbers released Friday, as the industry gears up for the Paris Air Show later this month, show a six percent increase from last year's forecasts in terms of numbers of aircraft and a two percent increase in value.
    Airbus last year already raised its 20 year forecasts, which it publishes each year, as does its US rival Boeing.
    The number of aircraft worldwide that count over 100 seats should reach more than 40,000 while airline traffic will increase by 4.4 percent per year over the time period, according to the Airbus estimates released Friday.
    This means hundreds of thousands of new jobs, the planemaker said, estimating the need for 530,000 more pilots and 550,000 new maintenance engineers.
    The planemaker Friday cited more first time flyers and rising disposable income for air travel as other reasons for its forecast.
    Emerging markets in China and India as well as other parts of Asia and Latin America are growing nearly twice as fast as North America and Western Europe.
    Airbus is also hoping the expected demand will feed appetite for its superjumbo jet A380 model.
    "The A380 is the solution for future traffic growth" said Leahy Friday.

    File photo KARACHI: Three suspects were shot dead late Friday night during an alleged police encounter here in Shah Latif Town, Geo News reported.
    According to police, the suspects were engaged in looting citizens when they reached the crime scene and were killed during an exchange of gunfire. Weapons, cash, and a motorcycle were recovered from the suspects, security officials added.
    Major operation in Shah Faisal
    22 suspects were taken into custody during a search operation carried out in the metropolis? Shah Faisal Colony on Friday night, the area?s superintendent of police (SP) said, adding that they include seven fugitives and two motorcycle thieves.
    According to SP Shah Faisal, 12 TT pistols, submachine guns (SMGs), hand grenades, cash, and mobile phones were recovered from the arrestees.
    On the other hand, during an operation conducted in Karachi?s Nazimabad area, one suspect was detained by the police, who added that the arrestee was allegedly involved in street crimes and selling drugs.
    As per SP Gulberg, weapons and contraband were also taken into custody from the suspect.
    Two fugitives, including one woman, were also detained in the same area, police said, adding that cases had been registered against the arrestees earlier in Nazimabad police station.
    In a similar operation carried out in Korangi, police held four suspects, which included foreigners as well. Security officers explained that weapons, contraband, and a motorcycle were recovered from the arrestees.
    The recovered motorcycle was reportedly stolen from SITE area, police added.

    Golimar, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Nazimabad, North Karachi, New Karachi, experienced an electric breakdown on Saturday once again, exacerbating public outrage.
    In addition, people in Gulistan, Maripur, Kemari, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, University Road and Safoora Goth and surrounding areas also started their fasts in complete darkness as ?load shedding? persisted.
    According to a K-Electric spokesperson, restoration work is underway to resume power supply disruption due to local faults in the affected localities.
    K-Electric stay committed towards providing relief to the public during Sehri and Iftar in Ramadan, he added.

    Earlier, consistent major power outages were experienced in various areas of the metropolis, beginning right from the very first time the public sat down to start fasting for the month of Ramadan.     "The nation of Qatar, unfortunately, has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level," Trump told reporters at the White House.
    "So we had a decision to make, do we take the easy road or do we finally take a hard but necessary action. We have to stop the funding of terrorism. I decided ... the time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding," Trump said, adding that he helped plan the Qatar action with Arab leaders after a recent summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
    A senior administration official told Reuters earlier this week that the United States had no indication from the Saudis or Emiratis in Riyadh during Trump's visit last month that they would sever ties with Qatar.
    The crisis is a major diplomatic test for the United States, which is a close ally of countries on both sides. Trump has called key players in the region since they severed ties with Qatar on Monday.
    The Trump administration has given mixed signals on whether to isolate Qatar or bring it into talks with other Gulf nations.
    The confrontation in the region intensified on Friday as Arab states tightened their squeeze on Qatar by putting dozens of figures with links to the country on terrorism blacklists, while Qatar's ally Turkey rushed to its side with plans to send troops.
    The Pentagon said the blockade was hindering US ability to plan for long-term operations in the region. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar is home to more than 11,000 US and coalition forces and an important base for the fight against Daesh. It is the US Air Force's largest base in the region.
    US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he expected all parties to find a resolution.
    "We call on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt to ease the blockade against Qatar," he said in Washington.
    Tillerson told reporters at the State Department that the crisis, which has cut transportation links and trade, had begun hurting ordinary people in Qatar, and that it was impairing business dealings and harming the US battle against Daesh.
    A picture on Facebook showed a supermarket displaying food from Turkey including milk, eggs, and chicken.
    Tillerson demanded that Qatar, as well as the other countries, take steps to curtail support for terrorism. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states have accused Doha of supporting extremist groups, but Tillerson suggested that all sides needed to do more.
    "The emir of Qatar has made progress in halting financial support and expelling terrorist elements from his country, but he must do more and he must do it more quickly," Tillerson said. "Others must also continue to eliminate factions of support for violent organisations within their own borders."
    On Trump?s Air Force One flight to New Jersey, a senior White House official told reporters that Trump and Tillerson were on the "same page" on Qatar.
    "The United States wants a resolution to the situation but it wants a resolution on terms consistent with the principles the president laid out in Riyadh,? the official said, adding that Trump was concerned about the humanitarian impact of the crisis but also Qatar's support of "terrorist finance."
    Riyadh, Cairo, and their allies have accused Qatar, the world's richest country per capita, of supporting militant movements across the region. They have imposed what Qatar said was a blockade of shipping and air traffic and closed Qatar's only land border, causing panic buying at supermarkets and provoking confusion and anxiety across the population.
    Qatar, which has developed an assertive foreign policy over the past decade, denied that it supports militants and said it was helping to reduce the threat of terrorism by backing groups that fight poverty and seek political reform.
    Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani called the moves by Arab neighbours and others "clear violations of international law and international humanitarian law.
    "They will not have a positive impact on the region but a negative one," the minister said during a visit to Germany.
    The United Arab Emirates said on Friday that Qatar must acknowledge concerns about its "troubling support for extremism" and "re-examine its regional policies."
    "This will provide the necessary basis for any discussions," UAE ambassador to the United States Yousef Al Otaiba said in a statement on Friday.
    German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel called for diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
    "Along with our American colleagues but above all our colleagues in the region, we must try to find solutions, especially lifting the sea and air blockades," Gabriel told reporters.
    'The hour of diplomacy'
    Qatar has vowed to ride out the isolation imposed on it by fellow Arab states and said it would not compromise its sovereignty over foreign policy to resolve the region's biggest diplomatic crisis in years.
    One US official said that while Qatar needs to do more to combat terrorist financing, it was inaccurate to single out that Gulf nation.
    ?The (counter terrorist financing) challenges they face aren?t unique to them,? said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. ?There are other countries in the region that grapple with the same issues.?
    Qatar is home to 2.7 million people but only about 300,000 citizens. Most of its population is comprised of foreign workers who helped build the tiny finger off of the Arabian Peninsula into a natural gas exporting powerhouse, crowned with skyscrapers. Projects include soccer stadiums for the 2022 World Cup.

    Armed Qatari gunboats patrolled the corniche of the capital Doha on Friday.
    Tiny Qatar has played an outsized role as a sponsor of factions in wars and revolutions across the Middle East under its 37-year-old ruler, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and his father Hamad who stepped down in 2013 after 18 years in power.
    With supply chains disrupted and concern mounting about economic turbulence, banks, and firms in Gulf Arab states were trying to keep business links to Qatar open and avoid a costly firesale of assets. The riyal currency has tumbled and the cost of insuring Qatari debt against default has risen.
    Clashing over brotherhood
    Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, and Bahrain added 59 people to terrorist blacklists, among them 18 Qataris, including Abdullah bin Khalid Al Thani, former interior minister and a member of Qatar's royal family.
    The Qatari government said the move "reinforces baseless allegations that hold no foundation in fact".
    "Our position on countering terrorism is stronger than many of the signatories of the joint statement ? a fact that has been conveniently ignored by the authors," it said in a statement. Those on the list, including the former interior minister, could not be reached for comment.
    Many of the others added to the list are figures associated with the Muslim Brotherhood who have made Qatar a base, including Brotherhood spiritual leader Yousef al-Qaradawi. Some are prominent militants who have fought in Libya and Syria.
    Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, whose AK Party has its roots in extremist politics and who has voiced support for the Brotherhood, signalled his firm backing for Qatar by swiftly signing a law to send troops to a Turkish base there.
    Turkey will send warplanes and warships to Qatar after an initial deployment of troops, the mass-circulation Hurriyet newspaper said on its website.
    Turkish officials were not immediately available to comment on the report, but Hurriyet said there were plans to send some 200 to 250 soldiers within two months.
