    LONDON: Britain's embattled Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday unveiled her full cabinet, making few changes as the premier clings to power after losing her parliamentary majority in a snap election.

    May made Damian Green, former work and pensions secretary, her deputy by naming him first secretary of state.
    Treasury chief secretary David Gauke moves in to take Green's place, while the leader of the House of Commons, David Lidington, becomes justice secretary.
    Lidington's move sees him replace Liz Truss, who has faced criticism in the justice role and has been moved by May to Gauke's former post as treasury chief secretary.
    The minor reshuffle has been seen as a reflection of May's weak position after she called a snap election, only to lose seats in Thursday's vote in a dramatic change of fortunes.
    In announcing the remainder of her cabinet on Sunday, May kept Jeremy Hunt on as health secretary despite him being vilified for his handling of the treasured National Health Service.
    Liam Fox stays on as international trade secretary, a post created in the wake of Britain's decision last year to leave the European Union as the country searches for new partners outside of the bloc.
    Downing Street announced on Friday that there would be no reshuffle among the government's top ministers, including Finance Minister Philip Hammond despite reports ahead of the election that he may be sacked.
    Boris Johnson stays on as foreign minister, alongside fellow eurosceptic David Davis as Brexit minister.
    May's replacement last year as interior minister, Amber Rudd, keeps her post, as does Defence Minister Michael Fallon.

    Kohli?s side avoided the embarrassment of an early exit as they survived a do or die showdown to advance from Group B in style.
    Having dismissed South Africa for 191, two-time champions India cruised home with 12 overs to spare at The Oval.
    In-form opener Dhawan was the key figure with 78 from 83 balls, including 12 fours, while captain Kohli weighed in with a typically elegant 76.

    ISLAMABAD: The joint investigation team (JIT), constituted by the Supreme Court to probe businesses and financial dealings of the Sharif family, has issued summons to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to appear before it, the PM House confirmed on Sunday.

    The PM House, in a statement issued to media, confirmed having received summons from the JIT and said the prime minister would appear before it on June 15.
    The investigation team has summoned Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday, June 15. The premier has been asked to come to the Federal Judicial Academy - temporary headquarters of the JIT - at 11 am on Thursday, along with relative record and documents, according to the letter sent to the PM House by the Panama case JIT.
    Speaking to Geo News, State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb also confirmed the development. She said the prime minister has been presenting financial records of last three generations and he would appear before the investigation team on Thursday.

    The JIT probing the global financial dealings of the prime minister's family has recently been mired in controversy, with subjects of the investigation accusing it of being biased and indulging in character assassination.

    Recently, the JIT, headed by Federal Investigation Agency Additional Director Wajid Zia, too informed the Supreme Court Panama case implementation bench of 'hurdles' being faced by them.

    The apex court has reiterated repeatedly that the high-profile probe team will not be given more than the 60-day time frame given to it to wrap up the investigation in light of the April 20 Supreme Court judgment in the Panama case.
    Earlier in the day, PM Sharif presided a key consultation meeting in Jati Umrah, which pondered over proceedings of the Panama case JIT.

    PARIS: Rafael Nadal coasted to a record 10th French Open title on Sunday, demolishing Stan Wawrinka in a brutally one-sided final which also earned the Spaniard a 15th Grand Slam crown.
    Nadal, 31, triumphed 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 to become the first man in history to win the same major 10 times.
    His collection of Slams now stands just three behind great rival Roger Federer, a staggering statistic coming just a year after he quit Roland Garros with a wrist injury.
    Playing in his 22nd Grand Slam final, Nadal triumphed in Paris without dropping a set for a third time.
    He also lost just 35 games in total and only six in the final, his most comprehensive victory since allowing Roger Federer four games in the 2008 final.
    "It´s really incredible. To win La Decima is very, very special," said Nadal.
    "I am very emotional. The feeling I have is impossible to describe.
    "It´s difficult to compare with other tournaments but the nerves and adrenaline I feel, it´s like no other place."
    Once Hollywood A-lister Nicole Kidman had helped unbox the Coupe des Mousquetaires to a crowd already wilting in 30-degree heat, the final was underway.
    It was the 22nd Slam finale for Nadal; just the fourth for Wawrinka, the oldest man in the championship match in 44 years.
    Sunday was also the first time since 1969 that the Roland Garros final had featured two men over 30.
    Despite having spent more than five hours on court getting to the final, 2015 champion Wawrinka had the first break point in the third game.
    The 32-year-old couldn´t take it and it proved to be the only break point he earned all afternoon.
    From there, it was all downhill.
    Nadal was unable to convert four break points in the fourth game.
    No matter as he broke through for 4-2 and then went to set point in the eighth game after a relentless forehand barrage sapped the will out of Wawrinka.
    A backhand which sailed long gave Nadal the first set with the Spaniard having crunched 10 winners to Wawrinka´s four while committing half the unforced errors.
    Nadal forced Wawrinka into another forehand error to break for 2-0 in the second set before the Swiss halted a run of seven games lost with a hold for 1-3.
    But the song remained the same, Nadal taking the set in the ninth game, just moments after Wawrinka, who knocked out world number one Andy Murray in the semis, had destroyed a racquet in utter frustration.
    First game of the third set and Nadal broke again as the man who stunned him in the 2014 Australian Open final suffered further damage.
    Nadal was soon a double break to the good for 4-1, held for 5-1 and then claimed a huge slice of history when Wawrinka limply dropped a backhand into the net.

    WASHINGTON: US forces carried out a strike in conjunction with Somali special forces Sunday against Al-Shabaab approximately 185 miles southwest of Mogadishu, according to the Pentagon.
    The Pentagon said the operation occurred at approximately 0600 GMT "in coordination with regional partners as a direct response to Al-Shabaab actions, including recent attacks on Somali forces."
    Somalia´s president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said Somalian special forces participated in the raid against a training center for the extremist group´s militants near Sakow, a district in the Middle Juba region.
    "The mission which was successfully ended destroyed an important training camp where the group used to organise violent operations," said Mohamed. "This undermines their ability to mastermind more attacks."
    Neither statement mentioned casualties.
    The Pentagon statement emphasized that the strike was carried out as part of US President Donald Trump´s March authorisation of American forces "to conduct legal action against Al-Shabaab within a geographically defined area of active hostilities in support of (the) partner force in Somalia."
    In early May an American soldier was killed in a nighttime raid in Somalia.
    It appeared to be the first US military death in combat there since the infamous events of "Black Hawk Down" 24 years ago, when 18 American servicemen died in what is called the Battle of Mogadishu.
    US special forces have been deployed in Somalia for years. Drone and missile strikes have also been used against Shabaab commanders and foot soldiers.
    Since 2007, Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda linked group, has been fighting to overthrow the internationally backed government in Somalia.

    CARDIFF: Pakistan and Sri Lanka head into their concluding group Champions Trophy group match knowing it?s a virtual ?quarter-final? after producing two of the tournament?s biggest upsets so far.

    Monday?s match in Cardiff has the look of a ?dead rubber? about it after Pakistan suffered a 124-run thrashing by arch-rivals and Champions Trophy title-holders India in their opening Group B match.
    But now, in the words of Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, the final round of fixtures in this pool are a "must-win game for all of us in the group".
    Sri Lanka too suffered an almost as heavy a loss in going down by 96 runs to South Africa first up in a tournament featuring the world?s top eight one-day international teams.
    But Pakistan bounced back to beat top-ranked South Africa by 19 runs on Wednesday at Edgbaston -- the ground where they had succumbed so to India just days earlier.
    And 24 hours later, Sri Lanka had a winning return at the Oval courtesy of a stunning seven-wicket success against India.
    Having conceded 319 for three against India, Pakistan restricted South Africa to 219 for eight.
    After the spinners did the initial damage, paceman Hasan Ali took three for 24 in eight overs.
    Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik then got Pakistan ahead of their required run-rate to secure a 19-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method when rain stopped play with their side 119 for three off 27 overs.
    Trying to explain the turnaround in his team?s fortunes, Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said: "We had a good bowling meeting.
    "We took wickets. If you take wickets, every good team feels under pressure."
    Pakistan were also inspired by playing in front of a partisan crowd, something they have rarely enjoyed since a 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore led to them playing most of their major matches overseas.
    "That is a feeling we miss, not playing in Pakistan," said Sarfraz.
    "Maybe that was a difference, the crowd was supporting us and that?s why the players were boosted."
    Sri Lanka too did not lack for support at the Oval as they turned the tables on India in dramatic fashion.
    Set 322 to win, Sri Lanka knocked off the runs with eight balls to spare thanks to contributions from Kusal Mendis (89), Danushka Gunathilaka (76) and all-rounder Mathews (52).
    "It?s one of the top wins, to beat India," said Mathews. "The bowlers did brilliantly to restrict India to 321. It was a very chaseable target.
    "Not many people expected us to win and that took a lot of pressure off us."
    Mondays match is the only Group B fixture taking place in Cardiff.
    Pakistan do have some recent knowledge of the ground beaten England there by four wickets in a one-day international last year.
    Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim starred with both bat and ball in that Cardiff clash and he will hope for more success upon on his return ?home? -- he was born in the nearby town of Swansea.

    DOHA: Qatar is ready to listen to the concerns of Gulf Arab states that have cut diplomatic and economic ties, Kuwait said on Sunday as it tried to mediate a solution to the worst regional crisis in years.
    Saudi Arabia and allies Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) severed ties with Qatar last week, accusing it of supporting militants and arch-foe Iran - charges Doha denies.
    The rift has disrupted travel, separated families, severed commercial links and sown confusion among banks and businesses while deepening divisions between their respective allies fighting in wars and political struggles from Libya to Yemen.
    "(Kuwait) affirms the readiness of the brothers in Qatar to understand the reality of the qualms and concerns of their brothers and to heed the noble endeavors to enhance security and stability," Kuwait's state news agency KUNA quoted Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah as saying.
    Kuwait, which has retained ties with Qatar and has often acted as a mediator in regional disputes, said it wanted to resolve the dispute "within the unified Gulf house".
    A previous mediation effort by Kuwait in which the Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah shuttled between Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Doha, failed to achieve an immediate breakthrough.
    "Is this the beginning of wisdom and reasonable thinking?     US President Donald Trump at first offered to host Qatar and its adversaries - all US allies - at the White House, but on Friday said Qatar has been a high-level sponsor of terrorism and backed the Gulf pressure.
    Saudi Arabia's powerful Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed efforts to "counter terrorism and extremism" in a telephone call with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Sunday, state news agency SPA said.
    But a Qatari diplomat said the crisis reflected a lack of US leadership.
    "This is the biggest testimony to US failure in the Gulf," the diplomat told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. "(It) gives others the impression the US does not know how to manage the relationship with its allies or is incapable."

    Qatar's official overseer of charities denied on Sunday that philanthropic groups in the country backed terrorism, saying it deplored the accusation.
    IRAN FLIGHTS
    A peninsular nation of 2.5 million people, Qatar has for years punched well above its weight in world affairs by parleying its vast gas wealth into influence across the region, irking many with its maverick stances and support for militants.
    But it was importing 80 percent of its food from bigger Gulf Arab neighbors before they cut ties and is now in talks with Iran and Turkey to secure food and water supplies.

    Iran - the main regional rival of Saudi Arabia - sent four cargo planes of food to Qatar and plans to provide 100 tonnes of fruit and vegetables every day, Iranian officials said on Sunday, amid concerns of shortages.
    Senior officials from the countries opposed to Qatar have warned it that appealing for foreign assistance will not advance a reconciliation.
    Qatar's energy minister said on Sunday Doha remained committed to an oil output cut deal agreed by OPEC and non-OPEC producers last month.
    Mohammed al-Sada said in a statement: "circumstances in the region shall not prevent the state of Qatar from honoring its international commitment of cutting its oil production".
    In a sign Gulf states were seeking to lessen the human impact of their June 5 severing of ties, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE said on Sunday they had set up hotlines to help families with Qatari members, without elaborating.

    ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan decided on Sunday to have CCTV cameras installed at all the polling stations across the country.

    Under the decision, that came with the General Elections only being a year away, 80,000 cameras will be bought for the purpose of surveillance.
    According to sources, in the first phase, cameras would be installed at the sensitive polling stations. The ECP would purchase IP Day and Night vision cameras.
    Along with the 80,000 cameras, 20,000 recording devices, 20,000 UPS and monitoring display devices would be bought, according to the ECP.

    BIRMINGHAM: Eoin Morgan said the potential of Ben Stokes is "through the roof" after having the best view in the house as the all-rounder´s stunning century helped England knock Australia out of the Champions Trophy.
    England, already through to the semi-finals of a tournament featuring the world´s top eight one-day international sides, were reeling at 35 for three chasing a target of 278 at Edgbaston on Saturday.
    But in a match their arch-rivals had to win to join them in the last four, Stokes, with an ODI best 102 not out, and England captain Morgan (87) put on 159 for the fourth wicket at better than a run-a-ball.
    By the time a second rain interruption saw the game called off, England were 240 for four off 40.2 overs and won by 40 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
    A previous rain break gave Morgan and Stokes time to assess their approach after a top-order collapse threatened to undo England´s earlier good work in restricting Australia to 277 for nine, with fast bowler Mark Wood taking an ODI best four for 33 and leg-spinner Adil Rashid four for 41.
    When the match resumed, Morgan hit boundaries off the first two balls he faced from Australia spearhead Mitchell Starc, part of a sequence of five fours in 11 balls
    "We felt that the positive way was the best way," Morgan told reporters of the chat he´d had with Stokes shortly before the match got underway again.
    "It managed to work, we did it in our own way."
    He added: "So I did what I do, and obviously Ben´s very naturally aggressive and finds attacking quite easy."

    Turning to fellow left-handed batsman Stokes, now one of the hottest properties in world cricket after an impressive debut season in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League, Morgan said: "His potential is through the roof. He´s always looking to influence the game - bat, ball, or even in the field.
    "A lot of guys with potential like that, when things aren´t going (their) way, back into a corner - but that´s not Ben."
    Australia captain Steve Smith, who skippered Stokes at IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiant, added: "I always thought he was a good player. He´s an incredibly strong lad and hits the ball very hard.
    "I think he´s probably developed some smarts... He´s certainly a quality player, and he´s in exceptional form at the moment."
    For Australia, this result meant both they and New Zealand, the team they beat in 2015 ODI World Cup final, exited the Champions Trophy without winning a game.
    Smith´s men came into Saturday´s match having suffered frustrating no result washouts in their previous Group A fixtures, with a combination of this result and Bangladesh´s win over New Zealand on Friday taking the Tigers into the last four alongside England.
    Aaron Finch (68) and Smith (56) both got out when well set, with Travis Head´s unbeaten 71 insufficient to get Australia to a par score of 300.
    Smith denied a lack of time in the middle had been responsible for Australia´s comprehensive defeat.
    "You say that we only had one hit, but that should be good enough for the players that we´ve got on our team," he insisted.
    "I thought we let ourselves down a little bit," added Smith, whose time in England has been overshadowed by an increasingly bitter contract dispute between Cricket Australia and their players.
    "We got ourselves into a pretty good position early with the bat. But someone in the top four probably needed to go on and make a hundred."
    Meanwhile Smith lamented the "freebies" his bowlers has dished out to Morgan and Stokes during a "momentum shift" after the initial rain break.
    "When you´re playing in a big tournament for your country, you need to step up and get the job done.
    "We just didn´t turn up the way I would have liked after the (rain) break."

    ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office denied on Sunday media reports claiming that Pakistan would send its troops to Qatar, in wake of the Gulf-Arab diplomatic fallout.

    According to an FO press release, the reports in some foreign media concerning the deployment of Pakistani troops in Qatar are ?completely fabricated and baseless?.
    ?These false reports appear to be a part of a malicious campaign aimed at creating misunderstanding between Pakistan and brotherly Muslim countries in the Gulf,? stated the FO spokesman, according to the press release.
    Some foreign media publications recently claimed that Pakistan would deploy 20,000 troops in Qatar, following Turkey's decision to allow its troops to be deployed at a Turkish military base in the Gulf country facing isolation.

    LONDON: India quicks kept South Africa openers subdued in a crunch Group B encounter of the Champions Trophy at the Oval on Sunday, after Virat Kohli won the toss and put the Proteas in to bat first.
    The winner of the game would go through to the semifinals, while the loser would be knocked out of the tournament.
    India won their first group game against Pakistan but lost to Sri Lanka in the second, while South Africa beat Sri Lanka in their opening game but lost to Pakistan in a rain-shortened game on Wednesday.
    All four teams in Group B, namely Pakistan, India, South Africa and Sri Lanka have two points each, turning the last two group games into virtual quarterfinals where the losing teams would be sent home.
    Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in Cardiff on Monday. From Group A, England and Bangladesh have already secured their berths in the semifinals.

    PESHAWAR: A video of the city?s finest beating up a taxi driver on the main road has cast a bad light on the much acclaimed ?apolitical and professional? police of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

    A video shot by a bystander a few days ago show officials of the newly formed City Patrolling Force take out a taxi driver from his vehicle and then manhandle him while passersby look on.
    The incident took place in the posh area of Defence on Khyber Road, where the US Consulate is located. Sources said the incident followed an altercation between the taxi driver and the driver of another private vehicle.

    Syrian state television has claimed the world's most wanted terrorist, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has been killed in an airstrike, according to several reports, the Daily Mail stated on Sunday.
    However, it is not the first time the leader of Daesh has been reported dead ? the latest claims have been met with skepticism by many experts and could well turn out to be false.
    The latest report of Baghdadi's death claims the terrorist was killed in Raqqa ? the de facto capital of Daesh.

    Syrian activists, Raqqa24, did report an airstrike in Raqqa which killed at least seven civilians on Saturday, although there was no mention made of Baghdadi.
    Baghdadi has a $25 million bounty on his head.

    "We still have no international rules," Merkel said alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto during a visit to Mexico City, stressing that there were important security concerns without common standards.
    "Otherwise some provider could emerge ... that's an island, and from which things could be done, relevant to security, that could destroy an entire system. On this question of the rules-based handling of it, we're still right at the start."
    Germany wants to use its presidency of the Group of 20 major economies to develop a concrete plan on digital policy at a summit in July. Merkel pointed to an agreement by G20 nations to fight cyber attacks on the global banking system.
    Germany has said it wants to establish a common global plan to promote fast internet for all and agree on common technical standards at the G20 meeting in Hamburg next month.
    Europe and the United States needed to work together on ensuring sensible rules because standards had been very erratically set so far, Merkel said.

    A statement carried on state media said Doha would "not take any measures against residents of Qatar who hold the nationalities of countries that severed diplomatic ties or lowered diplomatic representations with the state of Qatar, on the back of hostile and tendentious campaigns against the country".
    It said Qatar was acting in "accordance with its firm beliefs and principles".
    The decision will affect more than 11,000 people from the Gulf States of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain alone, according to official figures.
    Saudi Arabia and allies including the UAE and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting extremism.
    As well as cutting air, sea and land links with Qatar, the countries ordered its citizens to leave within 14 days.
    Amnesty International has said that the Gulf states opposed to Qatar were "toying" with people.
    ´For potentially thousands of people across the Gulf, the effect of the steps imposed in the wake of this political dispute is suffering, heartbreak and fear," said the human rights group has claimed.
    Figures from Doha´s National Human Rights Committee show that 8,254 Saudi residents live in Qatar.
    There are 2,349 Bahrainis and 784 Emiratis in the country.

    Tennis star Maria Sharapova. Photo: GETTY IMAGES LONDON: Maria Sharapova withdrew from Wimbledon on Saturday after failing to recover from a thigh injury, dealing another blow to the superstar´s bid to rebuild her career following a doping ban.
    The 30-year-old Russian, who was champion at the All England Club in 2004, was due to play in the qualifying event in the hope of making the main draw.
    "After an additional scan, the muscle tear that I sustained in Rome will unfortunately not allow me to compete in the grass court tournaments I was scheduled to play," she said in a statement.
    "I will continue to work on my recovery and my next scheduled tournament is in Stanford from July 31."
    The former world number one returned from a 15-month doping ban in April but has relied on wildcards to get into tournaments because her world ranking points expired while she was banned.
    At the moment the five-time Grand Slam title winner is ranked at 178.
    She was initially banned for two years for using meldonium, with the penalty later reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled she was not an intentional doper.
    After her ban expired, Sharapova returned to competition in April at the Stuttgart Open, reaching the semi-finals, and progressed to the last 32 of the Madrid Open.
    She failed to earn a qualifying spot for the French Open and was then denied a wild card into the main draw by Roland Garros organisers despite being a two-time champion.
    On the same day, she suffered the thigh injury which has now sidelined her from Wimbledon for a second successive season.
    Bruised by the Roland Garros snub, Sharapova decided not to request a Wimbledon wildcard, deciding instead to take her chances in three rounds of qualifying.
    She was still controversially handed a wildcard for the WTA grasscourt event in Birmingham later this month, a key warm-up for Wimbledon.
    But the injury she suffered in the Rome claycourt event in May has scuppered her plans, leaving her to probably hope for a wild card into the US Open, the season´s final Grand Slam event.
    She was the champion in New York in 2006.
    "I want to thank the LTA (Britain´s Lawn Tennis Association) for their amazing support on my return and providing me with a Birmingham wild card, a tournament which I hope many of you will be able to attend," Sharapova added in her statement.
    "I look forward to meeting you there next year."
    Only two weeks ago, Wimbledon decided that the qualifying event, held at nearby Roehampton, would be broadcast for the first time.
    However, a spokeswoman for the All England Lawn Tennis Club, the tournament organisers, told AFP that this was one of several "long-planned" changes and not a decision made in response to the added interest in the event caused by Sharapova´s presence.
    Qualifying is also to be ticketed for the first time.

    LAHORE: Around 13 people died and over 100 were injured in separate incidents after rain and windstorms lashed several cities across Punjab on Saturday. 
    Several cities, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Kasur, Bahawalnagar, Multan, Chichawatni and Lodhran received light and heavy rain on Saturday, along with gusty winds. 
    Six people died and around 60 were injured in Bahawalnagar alone, after thunderstorm hit the city in southern Punjab. Strong winds knocked down billboards and brought down roofs and walls of various structures.
    An emergency was declared at the District Headquarters Hospital. Among the deceased was a 10-year-old girl while the injured too included five children and 10 women.

    In Lahore, a man died and three others were wounded after roof of a house collapsed in Chauhang area. A woman died in a similar incident in Faisalabad in which one was also injured.
    In Multan, a man died of electrocution while 19 were injured in rain-related accidents. Similarly, in Rajanpur, a father and son were killed after being electrocuted. 
    Over 28 people were reported injured in different incidents in Multan and Lodhran as well.
    The rainfall resulted in tripping of several feeders of Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco), suspending power supply to a large part of the region.
    The cities affected by subsequent power breakdown included Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Nankana Sahib.
    Meanwhile, several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as Murree and surrounding areas received heavy rain and hail.

    The flyweight class, in boxing, includes fighters weighing 49 kg (108 lb) and up to 52 kg (112 lb).

    Waseem is the first Pakistani boxer to be listed as the number one boxer in the flyweight category.
    He will participate in WBC's two training fights, to be held in Panama, later in July.
    Waseem will fight for the gold title in the flyweight category later in September this year.
    In the latest rankings of flyweight category released by the WBC, Mexico?s Francisco Rodriguez Junior and Great Britain?s Andrew Selby hold the second and third spots respectively.

    LISBON: Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has become a father to twins with a surrogate mother, Portuguese media reported Saturday.
    Reports said the babies, a girl and boy named Eva and Mateo, were born on Thursday to a woman living on the US West Coast.
    The captain of Portugal's victorious Euro 2016 team had his first son Cristiano Junior in June 2010, also reportedly with a surrogate mother, although he has never confirmed it.
    British tabloid The Sun had reported in March that the quadruple Ballon d'Or winner was expecting twins.
    The 32-year-old striker is currently dating Spanish model Georgina Rodriguez.
    The reports come after a twin-heavy week in the celebrity world, after George Clooney and his human rights lawyer wife Amal welcomed newborns Ella and Alexander.

    French President Emmanuel Macron. Photo: Reuters  PARIS: French voters went back to the polls on Sunday for the first round of parliamentary elections that are tipped to give President Emmanuel Macron´s centrist party a commanding majority.

    Polling stations opened across France at 8:00 am (0600 GMT) and voting will continue in the largest cities until 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) with exit polls released immediately afterwards.
    Macron has enjoyed a smooth start in the five weeks since he beat far-right candidate Marine Le Pen to become France´s youngest-ever president, naming a cabinet that crosses left-right lines and making a big impression at international summits.
    His untested Republique en Marche (Republic on the Move, REM) party, which he only founded in April 2016, now needs a clear majority in the National Assembly for him to push through the reforms he has promised.
    A host of opinion polls show Macron´s party taking around 30 percent of the vote on Sunday, putting it in pole position to secure a landslide in the second round next Sunday.
    Some predictions show REM could take around 400 seats in the 577-seat chamber. The party has already had a boost after its candidates came first in 10 of the 11 French overseas constituencies that voted before the mainland.
    If no candidate wins over 50 percent in the first round, the two top-placed go into the second round -- as well as any candidate who won the votes of over 12.5 percent of the electorate.
    More than 50,000 police will be on patrol in a country still under a state of emergency following a wave of attacks that have killed more than 230 people since 2015.
    In the latest incident, which took place on Tuesday, a 40-year-old self-radicalised Algerian was shot and wounded after attacking a policeman with a hammer outside Paris´ Notre Dame cathedral.
    Breaking the mould 
    French voters have traditionally rallied behind their new leader in the legislative elections that follow the presidential ballot.
    Macron´s predecessors Francois Hollande in 2012, Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007 and Jacques Chirac in 2002 all won outright majorities. Unlike Macron, however, they all came from long-established parties.
    REM reflects the president´s desire for a new brand of politics.
    Initially dismissed by Macron´s opponents as a movement of young activists without any real roots, it will field 530 candidates on Sunday.
    In a bid to renew the political scene, many have never stood for office before, such as Marie Sara, a rare female bullfighter, who is taking on a senior member of Le Pen´s National Front in southern France, Gilbert Collard.
    Cleaning up politics 
    Macron has banned all REM candidates from employing family members if elected and they must not perform consultancy work while lawmakers.
    The edicts follow the scandal that sunk the presidential chances of Francois Fillon, candidate for the rightwing Republicans party, who is facing criminal charges for paying his wife Penelope more than 900,000 euros ($1.0 million) as his parliamentary assistant.
    Fillon denies the charges.
    Given Macron´s attempts to clean up French politics, he faced embarrassment on Friday when his small centrist ally, the MoDem party, was placed under preliminary investigation on suspicion of employing fake parliamentary assistants at the European Parliament.
    One of Macron´s ministers, Richard Ferrand, is also being probed over a property deal involving his wife.
    With the political tide turning against the main parties of left and right, they have warned that a landslide could be bad for democracy.
    "I don´t think it would be healthy for the democratic debate over the next five years," said Francois Baroin, who is leading the Republicans as they try to bounce back from Fillon´s failure in the presidential election.
    The Socialists of former President Hollande fear heavy losses after a disastrous performance in the presidential election.
    Le Pen defiant 
    Le Pen´s party meanwhile looks set to struggle to win 15 seats nationally, a score that would represent another deep disappointment after she was soundly beaten by Macron.
    But Le Pen remains defiant, telling AFP this week that with other parties likely to agree to work with Macron, "we will be the only opposition force."
    Macron has appealed to voters to give him a strong mandate to overhaul the labour market whose rigid rules on hiring and firing are blamed by many economists for preventing growth.
    The president was economy minister in the previous Socialist government that began introducing the reforms, sparking mass demonstrations in 2016 that lasted for months.
