    Senior batsman Shoaib Malik leaves the field after being run out. BIRMINGHAM: India thrashed Pakistan by 124 runs on Sunday in their Champions Trophy opener at Edgbaston, as the green-shirts yet again failed to break the jinx of defeat against their arch-rivals in ICC tournaments.

    Chasing a revised target of 289 in 41 overs after three rain interruptions, Pakistan finished on 164, with injured last man Wahab Riaz unable to bat as India won with 44 balls to spare.

    India piled up 319 for three in 48 overs in the first innings after Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and chose to bowl first.

    Rohit Sharma top-scored with 91 and put on 136 for the first wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (68).
    India captain Virat Kohli made 81 not out, sharing a quickfire third-wicket stand with Yuvraj Singh (53) as Pakistan paid a heavy price for dropping both batsmen.
    India plundered 72 runs in their final four overs as Pakistan´s attack wilted.


    Soon after Shehzad, the middle order batsman Babar Azam was dismissed by Umesh Yadav on 8 runs.   



    In the 14th over Pakistan's Azhar Ali got a second life when he was dropped by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. 

    However, the former skipper played a loose stroke on the ball of Ravindra Jadeja, giving an easy catch to Hardik Pandya after scoring a half century. 
    After Azhar Ali`s departure, Shoaib Malik was run out from a brilliant direct run out from Ravindera Jadeja. The veteran batsman was at 15, with a strike rate of 166.66. 
    Soon after Malik`s dismissal, another senior batsman, Mohammad Hafeez gave an easy catch to Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the bowl of Ravindera Jadeja.
    Hafeez played an inning of 33 runs off 43 balls. 
    For surprise of many, batsman Imad Wasim in the very next over, on the very first ball of his inning drove towards Kedar Jadhav to give a net practice catch. 
    Skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed also failed to create a momentum against the arch-rivals as he was caught behind by MS Dhoni on the bowl of Hardik Pandya. 
    After Sarfraz`s dismissal, Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali were quickly shown pavilion on the second and fourth delivery of the 33rd over. Packing up the Pakistani batting line up.

    Earlier, powerful batting by India skipper Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh powered India to 319-3. In the rain-hit match which was reduced to 48 overs, India have set a 324 run target for Pakistan to chase.

    India resumed batting at 173-1 (33.1 overs) after rain cleared for the second time during the game, looking in command even after young spinner Shadab Khan earlier gave Pakistan a much-needed breakthrough by breaking the Indian opening partnership with Shikar Dhawan's wicket.
    Shadab's strike ended the opening stand of 136, after sure-footed fifties by openers Rohit Sharma and Shikar Dhawan put India in control after play resumed at 46-0 (9.5 overs) as rain cleared after a brief interruption at Edgbaston.

    Pakistan bowlers earlier kept Indian openers quiet in the starting overs of the match before rain intervened. Mohammad Amir kickstarted the match with a fiery maiden, after Pakistan won the toss and opted to field against India to begin their Champions Trophy campaign at Edgbaston on Sunday.

    But India were soon back in command as Sharma hit a fifty off 71 balls, followed by Dhawan who brought up his half-century soon after.
    The two teams were expected to draw a global TV audience of over a billion for their high-octane clash  in the fourth match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. 
    This was the first encounter between the subcontinental rivals in a year, and only the fourth time the two teams are meeting competitively on British soil.
    India left out star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and experienced seamer Mohammad Shami from the side that launched their title defence in a 50-over tournament featuring the world´s top eight one-day international teams.

    Pacer Wahab Riaz sitting on ground after having twisted his foot. BIRMINGHAM: Pakistani pacer Wahab Riaz was taken to hospital after he developed a foot injury during the Champion Trophy match against India here on Sunday.

    Wahab gave away 87 runs in 8.4 overs in Sunday's match against arch-rival India. He, however, could not bowl after having twisted his foot in his 9th over.
    The Pakistani pacer had to leave the game before completing the over, after which he was taken to hospital.
    He left for the hospital walking with the help of crutches, where he was to undergo X-ray tests.

    Photo: FILE RAWALPINDI: Security forces on Sunday foiled a major terror bid in Balochistan seizing a sizeable quantity of arms and explosives, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

    Security personnel raided a hideout of banned militant outfit, Balochistan Liberation Army, in Kahan area of district Kohlu.
    They seized a huge cache of arms and explosives during the operation, the ISPR said in a statement.
    The cache included mines, detonators, guns and rocket launchers.

    Police aim guns at balcony above a betting shop in East Ham. ? Twitter LONDON: Police have raided a building in East Ham and are currently searching it, British media reported, after three men rammed a van through crowds of pedestrians on London Bridge Saturday, before attacking revellers with knives, killing seven people.

    Police are searching a building in East Ham that has been cordoned off, the Independent reported. There is heavy armed police presence on Barking Road, but it is not yet confirmed whether it was linked to the earlier arrests.

    At least 48 people were injured in the attack, the third to hit Britain in less than three months
    Images and video footage from the scene show at least half a dozen police vans parked in the High Street area, with dozens officers standing in the middle of the road.

    Sources told Sky News, the flat was home to one of the people suspected to have taken part in the stabbings, but the Metropolitan Police did not immediately comment.
    Residents reported hearing loud bangs and said they were later told by police they were controlled explosions.

    The entire nation especially music lovers were in shock over the sad demise of musician Aamir Zaki. It was on the night that Zaki passed away that reality TV show host Waqar Zaka went to Edhi Morgue in Sohrab Goth, where the deceased singer?s body was kept.
    Once there, Zaka made a Facebook live video, bashing Zaki?s peers and entertainment industry personalities for neglecting the legendary singer in his death.

    QUETTA: Under the ongoing Operation Raddul Fasaad, security forces foiled a major terror plot and killed 12 hardcore terrorists in Balochistan?s Mastung district, said the Inter-Services Public Relations.

    According to Pakistan Army?s media cell, the security forces conducted an Intelligence-based Operation in Splinji area of Mastung during the last two days.
    The terrorists were hiding inside a cave for planning, coordination and execution of terrorist activities in Balochistan, stated the ISPR press release.
    Five security officials including two officers also got injured in the crossfire.
    Balochistan - Pakistan's largest province in terms of land area - has been plagued by an insurgency and sectarian killings for several years now. However, security forces have conducted effective operations across the province cracking down on militants.
    This has led to a considerable drop in militancy in the province but scattered attacks are still reported at times.
    Following the beginning of Op Raddul Fasaad, security forces have intensified intelligence-based and combing operations in the province in an effort to establish peace in the province.

    LONDON: British police arrested 12 people Sunday in connection with the attacks in London that left seven people dead, after raiding several addresses in Barking, a suburb to the east of the capital.
    "The investigation into last night´s horrific attack in London is progressing rapidly as the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) continue to piece together exactly what occurred," the force said in a statement.
    It added that "a number of addresses" in Barking were still being searched.
    Four women wearing Islamic veils over their faces were seen being led away by police by an AFP photographer, although it was not clear whether they were among those arrested.
    There were several police vehicles outside a block of flats that had been cordoned off.
    Sky News had previously reported the arrest of four men following a raid by armed police at 7:00 am (0600 GMT), as well as one woman who was then released.
    Three men rammed a van through crowds of pedestrians on London Bridge on Saturday, before attacking revellers with knives, leaving seven people dead and 48 in hospital.
    The assailants were shot dead at the scene, although police are still seeking to establish whether they had accomplices.
    Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick earlier told reporters: "We believe the threat that they posed was neutralised.
    "Of course it´s a very complex and confused scene, and a confused series of events.
    "So it´s important that we first of all make sure there is no one else outstanding. We don´t believe there is, but we must make absolutely certain of that.
    "We have a very large investigation ongoing, and we will be seeking to establish whether anyone else was working with or assisting in any way or helping in the planning of this attack."
    At least 48 people were injured in the attack, the third to hit Britain in less than three months and occurring days ahead of a snap parliamentary election on Thursday.

    The attack came just five days ahead of a general election and just minutes after the end of the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus in an area teeming with bars where many fans were watching the football on television.

    Britain is on high alert only 12 days after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert in Manchester, north-west England and ahead of Thursday´s general election, in which security is a major theme.
    It is the latest in a string of attacks to hit Europe, including in Paris, Berlin and Saint Petersburg.
    Witnesses described the van speeding into several pedestrians on London Bridge and then one or more knife-wielding men sprinting towards bars packed with revellers enjoying a Saturday night out.
    One witness described seeing five assailants and several people said they were locked inside pubs and restaurants by police and had to come out with their hands on their heads.
    Italian photographer Gabriele Sciotto, who was watching the Champions League final at the Wheatsheaf pub in Borough Market, said he saw three men shot just outside the pub.
    In his picture, a man wearing combat trousers, with a shaved head and what looked like a belt with canisters attached to it could be seen on the ground with two more bodies behind him.
    Police responded rapidly with dozens of emergency vehicles and authorities led shell-shocked members of the public away from the scene.
    The three suspects were shot by armed police within eight minutes of the first call to the emergency services.
    The attack had harrowing echoes of an attack on London´s Westminster Bridge when 52-year-old British Khalid Masood rammed his car into pedestrians before crashing into the barriers surrounding parliament and then stabbing a police officer to death.
    US President Donald Trump offered his help, tweeting "WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!"

    French President Emmanuel Macron said France was "more than ever at Britain´s side."
    US pop star Ariana Grande, whose concert in Manchester was the scene of last week´s fatal terror attack, tweeted: "Praying for London".

    Witnesses on London Bridge reported seeing a van mounting the pavement and hitting pedestrians.
    "There was a van that crashed into the fences on London Bridge. And then there was a man with a knife, he was running. He came down the stairs and went to the bar," Dee, 26, who was visibly in shock and declined to give her last name, told AFP.
    BBC reporter Holly Jones, who was on London Bridge at the time of the incident, said she saw a van driven by a man travelling "at about 50 miles (80 kilometres) an hour".
    Alex Shellum at the Mudlark pub near the scene of the attack said a woman had come into the bar "bleeding heavily from the neck".
    "It appeared that her throat had been cut," he told the BBC.
    ´Large blade´ 
    Another witness, who gave his name as Alessandro, also told BBC radio that he saw a van strike several people on London Bridge.
    "I saw this van going left and right, left and right, trying to catch as many people as he could. And people just tried to get out of the way of the van.
    "Then I tried to help people, wounded people."
    Husband and wife Ben and Natalie told BBC radio they were outside Borough Market when they witnessed a stabbing.
    Ben said: "We saw people running away and then I saw a man in red with a large blade, at a guess 10 inches (25 centimetres) long, stabbing a man, about three times.
    "It looked like the man had been trying to intervene, but there wasn´t much he could do. He was being stabbed quite coldly and he slumped to the ground."
    Ben said the man then walked towards another pub. He said they saw a metal chair being thrown towards the man.
    "Then we heard three gunshots, definitely gunshots, and we ran."
    Germany ´resolutely at Britain´s side´ after attack: Merkel
    Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday that Germany was "resolutely at Britain´s side" after the attack in London that left six people dead and almost 50 injured.
    "Today we are united across borders in horror and mourning, but also in determination," Merkel said in a statement. "For Germany, I reiterate that in the fight against all forms of terrorism, we are resolutely at Britain´s side."
    French people among London attack casualties: French presidency
    French people are among the casualties from the London attack which left six dead and nearly 50 wounded, the Elysee Palace said on Sunday without giving further details.
    "France is doing everything it can to help," the presidency said in a statement, adding that security would be tightened for expatriates voting in London Sunday in the upcoming French parliamentary election.
    UK Conservatives suspend election campaign after London attack
    Britain´s ruling Conservatives said Sunday they were suspending their campaign for Thursday´s general election after six people died in a suspected terror attack in London.
    "The Conservative party will not be campaigning nationally today. We will review as the day goes on and as more details of the attack emerge," a spokesman told AFP.
    More parties are likely to follow suit.

    Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the terrorist attack in London resulting in loss of precious lives and injuries to many.

    He expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for early recovery of the injured.

    May mentioned beefing up jail sentences for terrorism offences and additional cyberspace regulations as possible areas of policy change.
    The attack was the third to hit Britain in quick succession after a similar incident on Westminster Bridge in March and a suicide bombing that killed 22 people at a pop concert in Manchester, northern England, less than two weeks ago.
    "We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are," May said in a televised statement in front of her Downing Street office.
    "We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism, and perpetrators are inspired to attack not only on the basis of carefully constructed plots after years of planning and training, and not even as lone attackers radicalised online, but by copying one another and often using the crudest of means of attack."
    She said campaigning ahead of a national parliamentary election on Thursday was suspended as a mark of respect, but would resume on Monday.
    "Violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process, so those campaigns will resume in full tomorrow and the general election will go ahead as planned on Thursday," said May.
    She listed four areas where she said change needed to take place.
    The first was the fight against the "evil ideology" inspiring the repeated attacks.
    The fight could not be won through military intervention alone, she said, adding that there was a need to defend pluralistic British values that were superior to anything offered by the "preachers of hate".
    Secondly, May said, new regulations were needed to reduce the space available to extremists online.
    "We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed. Yet that is precisely what the internet and the big companies that provide internet-based services provide," May said. "We need to work with allied democratic governments to reach international agreements that regulate cyberspace."
    Thirdly, she said, more needed to be done to identify and stamp out extremism across British society.
    The fourth area was the counter-terrorism strategy, which May said was robust but needed to be reviewed in light of the changing threat.
    She said that if an increase in jail sentences for terrorism-related offences, even apparently minor ones, were needed, then it would be done.

    LONDON: Three attackers drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge on before stabbing revellers nearby on Saturday night, killing at least seven people in what Britain said was the work of religious militants engaged in a "new trend" of terrorism.
    At least 48 people were injured in the attack, the third to hit Britain in less than three months and occurring days ahead of a snap parliamentary election on Thursday.

    The attack came just five days ahead of a general election and just minutes after the end of the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus in an area teeming with bars where many fans were watching the football on television.

    Britain is on high alert only 12 days after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert in Manchester, north-west England and ahead of Thursday´s general election, in which security is a major theme.
    It is the latest in a string of attacks to hit Europe, including in Paris, Berlin and Saint Petersburg.
    Witnesses described the van speeding into several pedestrians on London Bridge and then one or more knife-wielding men sprinting towards bars packed with revellers enjoying a Saturday night out.
    One witness described seeing five assailants and several people said they were locked inside pubs and restaurants by police and had to come out with their hands on their heads.
    Italian photographer Gabriele Sciotto, who was watching the Champions League final at the Wheatsheaf pub in Borough Market, said he saw three men shot just outside the pub.
    In his picture, a man wearing combat trousers, with a shaved head and what looked like a belt with canisters attached to it could be seen on the ground with two more bodies behind him.
    Police responded rapidly with dozens of emergency vehicles and authorities led shell-shocked members of the public away from the scene.
    The three suspects were shot by armed police within eight minutes of the first call to the emergency services.
    The attack had harrowing echoes of an attack on London´s Westminster Bridge when 52-year-old British Khalid Masood rammed his car into pedestrians before crashing into the barriers surrounding parliament and then stabbing a police officer to death.
    US President Donald Trump offered his help, tweeting "WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!"

    French President Emmanuel Macron said France was "more than ever at Britain´s side."
    US pop star Ariana Grande, whose concert in Manchester was the scene of last week´s fatal terror attack, tweeted: "Praying for London".

    Witnesses on London Bridge reported seeing a van mounting the pavement and hitting pedestrians.
    "There was a van that crashed into the fences on London Bridge. And then there was a man with a knife, he was running. He came down the stairs and went to the bar," Dee, 26, who was visibly in shock and declined to give her last name, told AFP.
    BBC reporter Holly Jones, who was on London Bridge at the time of the incident, said she saw a van driven by a man travelling "at about 50 miles (80 kilometres) an hour".
    Alex Shellum at the Mudlark pub near the scene of the attack said a woman had come into the bar "bleeding heavily from the neck".
    "It appeared that her throat had been cut," he told the BBC.
    ´Large blade´ 
    Another witness, who gave his name as Alessandro, also told BBC radio that he saw a van strike several people on London Bridge.
    "I saw this van going left and right, left and right, trying to catch as many people as he could. And people just tried to get out of the way of the van.
    "Then I tried to help people, wounded people."
    Husband and wife Ben and Natalie told BBC radio they were outside Borough Market when they witnessed a stabbing.
    Ben said: "We saw people running away and then I saw a man in red with a large blade, at a guess 10 inches (25 centimetres) long, stabbing a man, about three times.
    "It looked like the man had been trying to intervene, but there wasn´t much he could do. He was being stabbed quite coldly and he slumped to the ground."
    Ben said the man then walked towards another pub. He said they saw a metal chair being thrown towards the man.
    "Then we heard three gunshots, definitely gunshots, and we ran."
    Germany ´resolutely at Britain´s side´ after attack: Merkel
    Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday that Germany was "resolutely at Britain´s side" after the attack in London that left six people dead and almost 50 injured.
    "Today we are united across borders in horror and mourning, but also in determination," Merkel said in a statement. "For Germany, I reiterate that in the fight against all forms of terrorism, we are resolutely at Britain´s side."
    French people among London attack casualties: French presidency
    French people are among the casualties from the London attack which left six dead and nearly 50 wounded, the Elysee Palace said on Sunday without giving further details.
    "France is doing everything it can to help," the presidency said in a statement, adding that security would be tightened for expatriates voting in London Sunday in the upcoming French parliamentary election.
    UK Conservatives suspend election campaign after London attack
    Britain´s ruling Conservatives said Sunday they were suspending their campaign for Thursday´s general election after six people died in a suspected terror attack in London.
    "The Conservative party will not be campaigning nationally today. We will review as the day goes on and as more details of the attack emerge," a spokesman told AFP.
    More parties are likely to follow suit.

    Waiting for someone is a difficult thing.. but what if someone waits for 10 days and yes, at the airport?


    Well, it actually happened.

    A guy named Alexander Pieter Cirk made news headlines when he was hospitalised for exhaustion after spending 10 days waiting for his online girlfriend at Changsha Huanghua International Airport in China.
    But to his disappointment, the woman, identified only by her surname Zhang, never showed up.
    According to the news, Alexander flew 4,500 kilometers to China to see the 26-year-old Zhang, two months after meeting online, but that didn't happen.


    When contacted by the local media, the alleged girlfriend said that she thought he was joking when he said he was visiting.

    Even when Alexander sent her pictures of his air tickets, she didn't take him seriously.
    This whole incident has left the guy in a pitiful condition.

    BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan won the toss and opted to field against India to begin their Champions Trophy campaign at Edgbaston on Sunday.

    The two teams are expected to draw a global TV audience of over a billion when they face off in the high-octane clash Sunday, in the fourth match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. This is the first encounter between the subcontinental rivals in a year, and only the fourth time the two teams are meeting competitively on British soil.
    The match is scheduled to start at 2:30 pm Pakistan time (10:30 am local time).
    ?Completely calm?
    Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur insisted his side were "completely calm" ahead of their Champions Trophy opener against archrivals India.
    Arthur, after seeing Pakistan train Saturday, told reporters at Edgbaston on Saturday: "They have topped their skills up, and they´re ready for a big game.

    Young all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who made headlines with his impressive batting in the warm-up game against Bangladesh, is expected to debut against India today.
    ?Pakistan can surprise opponent any time?
    Indian captain Virat Kohli said during a pre-match presser Saturday that Pakistan cannot be taken lightly.
    ?As a team, I think they can surprise you because you don't play against them so much. You know of their abilities. But you're not too aware of how they react in different situations. All you can do in that situation is focus on your skill,? he said.
