Photo:file ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif?s daughter, Maryam Nawaz, expressed support for her brothers, Hussain and Hassan, who are being grilled by the Joint Investigative Team (JIT) probing the Panama case verdict.
    ?Hussain and Hassan are sons of the man who appeared for strict accountability in all the regimes,? she wrote on Twitter.
    ?Some said that the accountability process should start from me, but you need a heart like Nawaz Sharif?s to appear for accountability,? she tweeted.
    Even though Hassan and Hussain have never been a part of politics, they have suffered immensely during the [last] dictatorial regime, she added.
    Earlier on Friday, PM?s younger son Hassan Nawaz appeared before the JIT in the morning to record his statement.
    The JIT is investigating the prime minister's family?s global financial dealings in light of the Supreme Court's April 20 judgment.
    On Thursday, the premier?s elder son, Hussain Nawaz, appeared for the third time in front of the JIT. He spent about six hours with the JIT.

    The premier's son reached the Federal Judicial Academy ? the office of the JIT ? at around 10am Friday to record his statement.

    The JIT is investigating the prime minister's family?s global financial dealings in light of the Supreme Court's April 20 judgment.

    Strict security measures were in place in light of the premier's son's arrival at the venue. Hassan did not speak to the media as no one was allowed to come close to his motorcade, including his personal security staff.

    The premier's son brought with him some documents as well which he took with him.
    Sources said Hassan ? a businessman ? recently arrived in Pakistan from London after receiving summons from the JIT.

    Hussain informed that he has been summoned again by the JIT for the next session. ?I was made to wait for two hours,? he said, adding whoever the JIT summons has to appear before it.

    Sources, however, told Geo News that the Sharif family has claimed that Hassan Nawaz was summoned by the JIT today
    He also claimed that no evidence will be found of any irregularity against him, his father or any sibling in the investigation.
    The premier?s son said that he was interrogated in isolation, and was not allowed to be accompanied by a lawyer.
    Moreover, sources informed that Hussain has again been summoned by the JIT on Saturday, June 3.

    Bereaved protesters surround an ambulance with the deceased's body.   UMERKOT: Lying in a corner of Civil Hospital Umerkot, sewer cleaner Irfan Maseeh kept gasping for breath, his family members pleading the staff to treat him, but senior doctor at the facility refused to touch his sludge covered body as he was "fasting".
    "Dr Yousuf said he would not touch Irfan's dirty body until it was cleaned because he was fasting," the deceased's brother Pervaiz Maseeh told Geo.tv. "I cleaned his body, after which the an oxygen pump was sent for Irfan, but that was empty."
    The doctor's negligent response to the emergency situation and lack of facilities at the hospital, left Irfan to succumb to death.
    Irfan had dived down to clean a manhole Thursday morning when he fell unconscious after inhaling poisonous gases locked inside, Pervaiz said. He added one after another two others jumped inside to save the other, all collapsing due to the same reason.
    Pervaiz had reached the site after people in the area informed him of the incident.
    "When they were eventually taken out, I put Irfan on my back and rushed him to the hospital," the bereaved brother said. "A rickshaw driver stopped us on the way and gave us his vehicle to carry Irfan to the hospital as quickly as possible."
    But he could not be saved despite all the efforts people around made to get him back to breathe.
    Protest carried out after Irfan Maseeh's death.  The death of Irfan due to the negligence of doctor enraged the family members who started protesting with his body.

"But Umerkot SSP Usman Bajwa visited us a while back, promising that the responsible doctor would be taken to task and complete investigation would be carried out in the case."
    This was not the first death caused by the negligence of staff at Civil Hospital Umerkot, said Pervaiz. "A similar incident took place in 2014 when a sewage cleaner, struggling for life, was referred to Hyderabad for treatment as the facility in Umerkot was not equipped to treat him."

    LONDON: England paceman Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the rest of the Champions Trophy one-day international competition with a side strain, it was announced Friday.
    Woakes managed just two overs at the start of hosts England´s tournament-opening eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at the Oval on Thursday before leaving the field and played no further part in the match.
    "A scan has confirmed that Chris Woakes sustained a left side strain in yesterday´s ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh," said an England and Wales Cricket Board statement.
    "The injury means Woakes will miss the rest of England´s participation in the Champions Trophy."
    The ECB statement added: "An update on a replacement for the seamer for the remainder of the tournament will follow in due course."

    ISLAMABAD: Opposition parties in the National Assembly again boycotted proceedings on Friday over the government?s refusal to broadcast their budget speeches live.

    During his address in the assembly, Shah said the government is fomenting conflict with state institutions which will have devastating consequences. ?What will become of democracy [in these circumstances],? asked Shah.
    He was referring to recent controversial remarks by then Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz senator Nehal Hashmi wherein he threatened ?those investigating the prime minister?s family?.
    Shah wondered how a senator could have the courage to make such remarks.
    He claimed that despite all the sacrifices his party [Pakistan Peoples Party] has made, they never uttered such remarks.
    Responding to the opposition leader, Defence Minister Khwaja Asif said there is no defending the kind of language used by Hashmi. ?It can only be condemned,? he said, stressing that within one hour Hashmi?s party membership was revoked.
    ?This shows our commitment to respecting institutions,? he stated.

    In the past six months alone, the two countries have played two Chappell-Hadlee series: Australia won in Australia and New Zealand won in New Zealand. Last time they met at Edgbaston was in Champions Trophy 2013, in a match that was washed out.
    Australia and New Zealand have clashed in four (completed) Champions Trophy matches, all of which have been won by two-time champions Australia.
    New Zealand beat Australia in a thrilling pool match in Auckland at the 2015 World Cup only to lose to their trans-Tasman rivals in the final in Melbourne.

    ISLAMABAD: A letter of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has revealed that the SBP deputy governor received a WhatsApp call on April 27 regarding the Panama Leaks probe. 
    Sources said the caller identified himself as the Supreme Court registrar and directed the SBP official to include the name of Amir Aziz in the list of persons to be recommended for the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the high-profile case.

    EU antitrust regulators aim to slap a hefty fine on Alphabet unit Google over its shopping service before the summer break in August, two people familiar with the matter said, setting the stage for two other cases involving the US company.
    The European Commission's decision will come after a seven-year investigation into the world's most popular internet search engine triggered by scores of complaints from both U.S. and European rivals.
    The EU competition authority accused Google in April 2015 of distorting internet search results to favour its shopping service, harming both rivals and consumers.
    The Commission and Google declined to comment. The US company has in the past rejected the charges, saying that regulators ignored competition from online retailers Amazon and eBay Inc.
    Fines for companies found guilty of breaching EU antitrust rules can reach 10 percent of their global turnover, which in Google's case could be about $9 billion of its 2016 turnover.
    Apart from the fine, the Commission will tell Google to stop its alleged anti-competitive practices but it is not clear what measures it will order the company to adopt to ensure that rivals get equal treatment in internet shopping results.
    The regulator could set out general principles or specific instructions for Google to follow said an observer.
    The Commission's tough line is in sharp contrast with the US Federal Trade Commission which settled its own web search case with the company in 2013 by requiring Google to stop "scraping" reviews and other data from rival websites for its own products.
    Google made three unsuccessful attempts to settle the case with the previous European Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia in a bid to stave off a possible fine and a finding of wrongdoing.
    Almunia's successor Margrethe Vestager, however, has shown no willingness to settle with Google.
    The company has also been charged with using its Android mobile operating system to squeeze out rivals and with blocking competitors in online search advertising related to its "AdSense for Search" platform.
    The platform allows Google to act as an intermediary for websites such as online retailers, telecoms operators or newspapers. The Commission has warned of massive fines in both cases.

    Jennifer Garner is not happy about a celebrity magazine story on her life post-divorce from actor Ben Affleck.
    The "Miracles from Heaven" star, who filed for divorce in April nearly two years after the A-list Hollywood couple first split, took the rare step of distancing herself from a People magazine cover story that speculated about when she might start dating again.
    Garner and Affleck's split in 2015 after a 10-year marriage has been one of the most talked-about breakups in Hollywood, especially as Affleck continued to live on the family property.
    In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Garner said she wanted to set the record straight about any suggestions that the People magazine June 12 issue cover picture and the story came from her.
    "I did not pose for this cover. I did not participate in or authorize this article," Garner, 45, wrote.
    She added that it was "not unusual for me to receive calls from loved ones thinking I forgot to tell them I am pregnant--with twins!--(Geez Louise), but those are so ridiculous they're easy to ignore.
    "This isn't a tragedy by any measure, but it does affect me and my family and so, before my mom's garden club lights up her phone, I wanted to set the record straight.
    "For what it's worth: I have three wonderful kids and my family is complete," she wrote.
    Affleck, 45, the director of Oscar-winning movie "Argo," announced in March that he had been in rehab for alcohol addiction and thanked Garner for her support. A month later they filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce has not been finalized.
    The People magazine story quoted an unidentified insider as saying that Garner is focusing on the future and would eventually think about dating again.
    People magazine said in a statement on Thursday that the publication "covers Hollywood stars beloved by our audience, and our story on Jennifer Garner is fair and truthful. To be clear, it does not include rumors and does not say she's pregnant. We wish her well."

    Akihito, 83, who has had heart surgery and treatment for prostate cancer, said in rare public remarks last year he feared age might make it hard for him to fulfill his duties.
    Akihito, the first Japanese emperor who was never considered divine, has worked for decades to soothe the wounds at home and abroad of World War Two, fought in his father Hirohito's name. He will be succeeded by Crown Prince Naruhito, 57.
    The law passed the more powerful lower house with just a handful of dissenting votes and now goes to the upper house, with the intention of getting it passed before the current session of parliament ends in several weeks.
    "I hope that the lower house today, and the upper house in days to come, will take this up in such a fashion that we can expect it to pass speedily," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference prior to the vote.
    While no definite plan for an abdication has been confirmed, media have said it will likely take place in late 2018, which would mark nearly 30 full years on the throne for the emperor.
    The last time an emperor stepped down was in 1817. The bill is one-off legislation that would allow only Akihito to step down, with no provisions for future emperors.
    In a move to deal with a shortage of male heirs and the shrinking number of imperial family members, the bill also included a resolution calling for debate on allowing women to stay in the Imperial family even after their marriage. Current law mandates that they leave.
    Both allowing them to stay and the controversial issue of changing the system to allow female inheritance have been suggested as a way of dealing with the shrinking pool of royals, an issue highlighted last month with the announcement that the Emperor's oldest granddaughter will marry a commoner.

    The female athletes boarded a bus from National Cricket Academy Lahore to the airport. They are also accompanied by six officials.
    Speaking to the media, Captain Sana Mir said that all the teams come well-prepared for the world cup. ?The girls have worked really hard and we hope to achieve good results.?
    We will bring our A-game and put our best foot forward, she remarked. 

    On clash with India, she said ?we have beaten the Indian women team in T20 but will try to beat them in the world cup too.?
    Pakistan?s first match is against South Africa on June 25. The team will play against England on June 27, India on July 2, Australia on July 5, New Zealand on July 8, West Indies on July 11, and Sri Lanka on July 15.

    The three-day fruit boycott seeks to bring down 'unjust' prices of fruit in the month of Ramazan. Photo:file The country-wide boycott of fruits started on Friday following a call on social media asking people to do so in order to bring down the soaring prices.
    Sindh government and Karachi commissioner have also expressed their support for the boycott.
    Many citizens believe that this is the only solution to the prevailing problem. ?I will boycott the purchase of fruits for sure,? said one of the citizens.
    The vendors at a fruit market on Karachi?s Super Highway remarked that if the people decide to boycott purchase of fruits then it will definitely affect the market. However, some were skeptical regarding the success of the social movement.
    One of the vendors also said that the fruit is not expensive at the market. The prices are increased as soon as fruit reaches the city, he added.
    However, this claim was challenged by vendors, who sell fruits in the city. They claimed that fruits are sold to them at an expensive rate.
    Speaking over the matter, Sindh Transport Minister Nasir Shah remarked that Pakistan Peoples Party is with people in the fruit boycott. The boycott is the start of crackdown against profiteers, he added.
    Call for three-day boycott
    Concerned citizens had launched a movement on social media asking for three-day boycott of buying fruits. The messages, which started circulating on WhatsApp Wednesday night, asked people to boycott the purchase of fruits from June 2 to June 4 in order to bring their prices down to a normal level.
    In Ramazan, vendors tend to increase prices of essential items whose sale spikes as the demand increases. However, some sellers claim the rise in prices is not man-made but natural as demand increases manifold.
    In 2010, when sugar prices had skyrocketed, economists had suggested that lesser intake would ultimately weaken demand, and lead to a price crash in the open market.
    Commodities missing in utility stores
    People tired of the hike in prices of commodities were also seen at a utility store in Faisalabad.
    ?It is unfair that commodities which normally cost Rs60 or Rs80 are sold for Rs160 or Rs180 during Ramazan,? remarked one of the customers.
    Moreover, essential commodities such as sugar and flour were missing from the utility stores, adding to the woes of the people.
    ?I have been here since morning but there is no sugar available,? said another customer.
    However, the shop keeper assured that it is a temporary problem which will be resolved soon.

    French President Emmanuel Macron said Donald Trump had made a historic error Thursday by abandoning the Paris climate agreement and invited US climate scientists and entrepreneurs to come and work in France.
    Trump has "committed an error for the interests of his country and a mistake for the future of our planet", Macron said on television, adding, "The United States has turned its back on the world."
    Referring to Trump's idea of redrawing the 2015 accord, he said, "we will not in any way renegotiate an agreement that is less ambitious" than the present one.
    In an exceptional step, continental Europe's three biggest economies ?Germany, France, and Italy ? issued a joint statement in which they criticised Trump's decision and said the pact was "not renegotiable".
    "We note the United States' decision with regret," they said, describing the accord as "a vital tool for our planet, our societies and our economies".
    "We are firmly convinced that the agreement cannot be renegotiated," they added, referring to the part of Trump's announcement that said Washington was open to negotiating a new agreement.
    In Berlin, Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed "regret" at the decision, and called for a continuation of "climate policies which preserve our world".
    Seven Social Democratic ministers in her coalition government said the United States "is harming itself, we Europeans and all the people of the world".
    Paris city hall meanwhile said it would illuminate its building in green on Thursday "in a sign of disapproval" of Trump's announcement and to recall the determination of cities around the world to fight climate change.

    In Rome, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni urged against any retreat from fighting climate. "Let's not go backwards from the Paris Agreement," he said on Twitter. "Italy is committed to reducing (carbon) emissions, to renewable energy, sustainable development."
    British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday told President Donald Trump the Paris climate accord protects the "prosperity and security of future generations" after he announced the US was abandoning the historic deal.
    "The Paris Agreement provides the right global framework for protecting the prosperity and security of future generations while keeping energy affordable and secure for our citizens and businesses," May told Trump by phone, according to a Downing Street statement.
    Mexico, a country hailed as a leader in fighting global warming, called the commitments made in the Paris climate pact a "moral imperative" Thursday after its neighbour the United States withdrew from the deal.
    "We will continue promoting international cooperation, without restrictions, to see the accord implemented in full," Mexico's foreign and environment ministries said in a statement.
    Climate change is "an incontrovertible fact based on scientific evidence", it said. "Taking action to slow climate change is a moral imperative."
    President Enrique Pena Nieto also reaffirmed his support for the deal, tweeting that "Mexico maintains its backing and commitment to the Paris accord."
    China's state news agency Xinhua described US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord as a "global setback" and rejected Trump's claim that it would lead to many more jobs in America.
    "Trump's decision to ditch the Paris deal will leave a fairly big shoe for a single country to fill," Xinhua said, adding that major players such as China, the European Union, and India had reiterated their willingness to step up efforts.
    Noting that Trump said he had had "extensive discussions" with people on both sides of the climate debate, it said, "One can only assume that Trump has very good reasons to leave the Paris agreement and that he knows the implications of US retreat from the landmark deal."
    Japan said on Friday the decision by the United States to withdraw from the Paris climate accord was "regrettable" and that climate change required a concerted effort by the whole of the international community.
    "Japan believes the leadership of the developed countries to be of great importance (on climate issues), and the steady implementation of the Paris Agreement is critical in this regard," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
    Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference that Japan would continue to call on the United States to engage on the issue of climate change.
    US to withdraw from Paris climate accord, says Trump

    Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the European Union's (EU) executive Commission, lashed Trump's decision as "seriously wrong". The body's commissioner for climate action and energy Miguel Arias Canete also pledged continued "global leadership" on climate change.
    "The EU deeply regrets the unilateral decision by the Trump administration," he said in a statement.
    "The Paris Agreement will endure. The world can continue to count on Europe for global leadership in the fight against climate change. [?] Europe will lead through ambitious climate policies and through continued support to the poor and vulnerable," he added.
    The European Commission (EC) on Thursday pledged continued "global leadership in the fight against climate change" after the US said it would withdraw from the Paris accord on curbing climate emissions.

    "The Paris Agreement will endure. The world can continue to count on Europe for global leadership in the fight against climate change.... The EU deeply regrets the unilateral decision by the Trump administration," it said in a statement issued by the commissioner for climate action and energy Miguel Arias Canete.
    The US decision to exit the landmark Paris climate deal is a "major disappointment," a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Thursday, saying America needed to remain a "leader on environmental issues".

    The spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, also said Guterres remained confident that US cities, states and businesses would "continue to demonstrate vision and leadership" by working for a low-carbon future.
    "The decision by the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change is a major disappointment for global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote global security," the spokesman said in a statement.
    "It is crucial that the United States remains a leader on environmental issues," Dujarric added.
    "The Secretary-General looks forward to engaging with the American government and all actors in the United States and around the world to build the sustainable future on which our grandchildren depend."
    US Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders also commented on the issue, terming Trump's decision an "international disgrace".
    Former Vice President Joe Biden said the move "imperils US security and our ability to own the clean energy future".

    Tesla founder Elon Musk on Thursday confirmed he would quit White House business panels in reaction to President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

    Musk had vowed Wednesday to quit the business panels if Trump made good on a pledge to scrap the agreements.
    He was joined on Thursday by other tech and industrial sector representatives who expressed frustration with the White House's decision and pledged to continue working to combat global warming.
    Disney CEO Bob Iger, who was also on the Trump panel, stated he was leaving. 

    "Disappointed with today's decision on the Paris Agreement," Jeff Immelt, CEO of General Electric, wrote on Twitter. "Industry must now lead and not depend on government."
    Oil supermajors ExxonMobil and Chevron reiterated their support for the endangered agreement while automaker General Motors said the White House's decision would not lessen its resolve on the climate.
    "GM will not waver from our commitment to the environment and our position on climate change has not changed," the company said in a statement. "International agreements aside, we remain committed to creating a better environment."
    Chevron spokeswoman Melissa Ritchie said her company "supports continuing with the Paris Agreement as it offers a first step towards a global framework.
    The accord aligns with the company's own policy on carbon emissions, she said.
    "It's the first major international accord to address climate change that includes emissions reduction pledges from both developed and developing economies," Exxon told AFP.
    Goldman Sachs Group Inc Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein criticised the United States' decision to withdraw from the Paris climate deal in his first message on Twitter Inc since joining the platform six years ago.
    "Today's decision is a setback for the environment and for the US's leadership position in the world," Blankfein said, adding the hashtag #ParisAgreement.
    Goldman spokesman Michael Duvally confirmed that the account is Blankfein's. 
    The Information Technology Industry Council was equally scathing.
    "This is clearly disappointing, and a setback for America's leadership in the world," ITI President Dean Garfield said in a statement.

    KARACHI: Senior lawyer Sharifuddin Pirzada passed away in the city on Friday morning. He was 94 years old. 
    Hearing news of the senior lawyer's demise, the Sindh High Court decided to discharge all the boards. Important cases in the high court will be heard inside the judges' chambers.
    Pirzada, who was most recently the counsel for former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf in the treason case against him, was considered the top constitutional expert of Pakistan.

    He also served as Pakistan's foreign minister during the government of former president Gen Ayub Khan as well as the attorney general during the Ayub and Gen Yahya Khan's governments. He also served as a secretary to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the 1940s.
    From 1985 to 1988, Pirzada also served as the secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Conference.  
    Pirzada began his legal career in the Bombay High Court before moving to the newly created Pakistan.

    Pirzada was not considered a friend of democracy by rights activists of the country as he wrote the legal order for Musharraf?s emergency rule, updating a similar one he prepared for General Ziaul Haq after his 1977 coup.

    President Donald Trump's administration on Thursday asked the US Supreme Court to revive his ban on travelers from six Muslim-majority nations after it was blocked by lower courts that found it was discriminatory.
    The administration filed two emergency applications with the nine high court justices seeking to block two different lower court rulings that went against Trump's March 6 order barring entry for people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days while the US government implements stricter visa screening.
    The move comes after the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals on May 25 upheld a Maryland judge's ruling blocking the order.
    The administration also filed a separate appeal in that case.
    "We have asked the Supreme Court to hear this important case and are confident that President Trump?s executive order is well within his lawful authority to keep the nation safe and protect our communities from terrorism," Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.
    At least five votes are needed on the nine-justice court in order to grant a stay. The court has a 5-4 conservative majority, with Justice Anthony Kennedy ? a conservative who sometimes sides with the court's four liberals ? the frequent swing vote. Another of the court's conservatives, Neil Gorsuch, was appointed by Trump this year.
    If the government's request is granted, the ban would go into effect.
    In its 10-3 ruling, the US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals said challengers of the ban, including refugee groups and others represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, were likely to succeed on their claim that the order violated the US Constitution's bar against favoring or disfavoring a particular religion.
    Trump administration approves tougher visa vetting, including social media checks
    Under the new procedures, consular officials can request five years' worth of social media handles, email addresses, and phone numbers
    The March ban was Trump's second effort to implement travel restrictions on people from several Muslim-majority countries through an executive order. The first, issued on Jan. 27, led to chaos and protests at airports and in major US cities before it was blocked by courts.
    The second order was intended to overcome the legal issues posed by the original ban, but it was blocked by judges before it could go into effect on March 16.

    Update [04:52 AM PST]: Around dawn, the body of the suspected gunman was found in a hotel room in the complex close to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and an air force base.
    Police said it appeared the suspect had killed himself after firing at officers searching the still-smoking building. "Our assessment is he burned himself. He committed suicide," Oscar Albayalde, chief of the capital's police office, said in a radio interview.
    Officials said at least 30 people were hurt, some seriously, as they rushed to escape what at first had been feared as a militant attack.
    Update [04:20 AM PST]: The suspect in the firing incident is dead, according to media reports.
    The cause of his death is still unconfirmed. Philippines national police killed a man who fired shots inside a casino in the Philippine capital, AFP reported citing authorities.
    "He's dead. He was killed by our troops," dela Rosa told the GMA television network.
    However, according to Reuters, the gunman killed himself, police said.
    Update [02:50 AM PST]: At least 25 people were hurt, some seriously, as they rushed to escape, medical officials, including those from the Philippine Red Cross' local Pasay Chapter, said.
    Jeri Ann Santiago, who works in the emergency room at the San Juan de Dios hospital, close to Resorts World, said 13 people were being treated, but more were on the way.
    Most of the patients were suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and some had injuries such as fractures, she added, explaining that none had gunshot wounds.

    In addition, windows were smashed at the casino complex as police searched for the gunman responsible, a local police officer said.
    However, a police officer at the scene mentioned there were no more gunshots, responding to an AFP journalist's prior report of more gunshots being heard. The policeman stated the sound of the blasts was from the windows being smashed, but could not say why the windows were smashed.
    On the other hand, 54-year-old Gil Yonco stood weeping in the street at around 5 AM local time, since his daughter had been inside Resorts World on the second floor.
    Yonco's daughter had called him for help because she was getting suffocated by smoke. However, there was no answer when he tried to call her back. "I am very worried as a parent, I need to find her," he said.
    Ronald Romualdo, a maintenance worker at Resorts World, said he saw a woman fall from an upper floor while trying to escape. "Several people were injured," he added.
    Update [02:30 AM PST]: At least three more gunshots have been heard at the casino complex as police look for a gunman who had fired an assault rifle earlier, an AFP reporter on the scene said.
    Some windows at the complex shattered as the gunshots were heard, according to the reporter, about five hours after the man went into the casino and fired what police said was an M4 rifle and then disappeared.
    Update [02:25 AM PST]: "We are looking into a robbery angle because he did not hurt any people and went straight to the casino chips storage room," National police chief Ronald dela Rosa noted.
    The top security official said the suspect was "foreign-looking, a Caucasian, about six feet tall". However, the gunman may have escaped because smoke had obscured footage for CCTV cameras, he added.
    Thirteen people had been treated at a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation and fractures, hospital staff told Reuters.
    Update [02:00 AM PST]: "There hasn't been anyone shot... there are only injuries from people who tried to escape in a stampede or from smoke," dela Rosa said on DZMM radio.

    The gunman, however, was still on the loose after firing an assault rifle, the national police chief said regarding the incident at Manila Resort, which is across a road from one of the main terminals of the Philippines' international airport.
    Some people inside the casino recounted feelings of terror when the shooting occurred.
    "I was about to return to the second floor from my break when I saw people running. Some hotel guests said someone yelled 'ISIS'," Maricel Navaro, an employee of Resorts World, told DZMM radio.
    "Guests were screaming. We went to the basement locker room and hid there. People were screaming, guests and employees were in panic," Navaro added.

    "When we smelled smoke, we decided to go for the exit in the carpark. That's where we got out. Before we exited, we heard two gunshots and there was thick smoke on the ground floor."
    Update [01:50 AM PST]: While Daesh immediately claimed responsibility, stating "lonewolf soldiers" from its group carried out the attack, as per SITE Intelligence Group that monitors terrorist organisations, dela Rosa said police "cannot attribute this to terrorism".
    He said it may have just have been an attempted robbery, pointing out the gunman tried to steal the gambling chips.
    Update [01:30 AM PST]: National police chief Ronald dela Rosa issues a statement on the incident.
    "There hasn't been anyone shot," dela Rosa said on DZMM radio, adding there was no indication yet it was a terrorist incident. "We cannot say this is an act of terror? he did not hurt anyone," he explained.
    Dela Rosa said the man, who appeared to be acting alone, walked into one of the gambling rooms and fired an M4 rifle at a large television screen, then poured gasoline onto a gambling table and set it alight. He said the man then fired again at a stock room containing gambling chips and filled a backpack with them.
    The man then left the room and went upstairs to a hotel section of the complex, according to dela Rosa, who added that there are no reports of hostage-taking, although the gunman has not yet been caught.
    "We have cleared the rooms (on the floor of the hotel the gunman was last seen) but we don't see where he is," dela Rosa said.
    Update [01:20 AM PST]: A spokeswoman for the US State Department said earlier it was not aware of any US citizens being affected but was continuing to gather information.
    "We remain in close contact with local officials," she said, adding that US citizens were advised to exercise caution and monitor local media for further information. 
    Update [01:10 AM PST]: Through Twitter updates, the Manila Resort management commented on how Philippine National Police is carrying out an operation to analyse the situation, but refused to share further information saying it "may jeopardise their movement at this point".

    The company added that it has "no official information as to the identity or affiliation of the persons responsible" for the incident.

    The company mentioned that it is currently working with the local police to offer the best possible security to the visitors.

    Resorts World Manila said on social media it was on lockdown and the local fire department said a blaze was burning on the second floor of the building.
    "We ask for your prayers during these difficult times," Resorts World said on Twitter.
    Witnesses who spoke to radio stations said several gunmen were seen in the complex. News channel ANC said there were two gunmen, wearing masks and black clothes.

    The information could not be immediately verified.

    He declared martial law shortly after militants went on a rampage through the southern city of Marawi, which is about 800 kilometres (500 miles) south of Manila.

    "Even the security personnel panicked. Maybe because of the heavy firearm, they can't put up a fight so they prioritised life and safety," Jeff Santos, a high roller at Resorts World Manila, told a Philippine radio station. "Definitely us patrons, we did not expect that, everyone ran away."
    Jeri Ann Santiago, who works in the emergency room at the San Juan de Dios hospital, said patients were suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and some had injuries such as fractures. None had gunshot wounds, she said.
    Kimberly Molitas, a spokeswoman for the capital's police office, said 113 million Philippine pesos ($2.27 million) worth of casino chips stolen during the raid had been recovered. "Please help pray for the injured and the loss of lives due to suffocation," she said in a message to reporters.

    A casino worker named Julio from the third floor of the complex told DZMM radio he heard many gunshots and saw people running up the stairs from the second floor.
    Ronald Romualdo, a maintenance worker at Resorts World, told the station he saw a woman fall from an upper floor while trying to escape. "Several people were injured," he said.

    The JIT is investigating the prime minister's family?s global financial dealings in light of the Supreme Court's April 20 judgment.
    Strict security measures are in place in light of the premier's son's arrival at the Federal Judicial Academy ? housing the offices of the JIT.
    Sources said Hassan ? a businessman ? recently arrived in Pakistan from London after receiving summons from the JIT.

    On Thursday, the premier?s elder son, Hussain Nawaz, appeared for the third time in front of the JIT.
    After spending around six hours with the JIT, Hussain emerged out of the building and briefly spoke to the media.
    ?If the matters proceed in a fair manner then it?s fine otherwise we would present the issue before the Supreme Court and public,? said Hussain.
    Hussain informed that he has been summoned again by the JIT for the next session. ?I was made to wait for two hours,? he said, adding whoever the JIT summons has to appear before it.
    Hassan Nawaz fails to appear before JIT
    Sources, however, told Geo News that the Sharif family has claimed that Hassan Nawaz was summoned by the JIT today
    He also claimed that no evidence will be found of any irregularity against him, his father or any sibling in the investigation.
    The premier?s son said that he was interrogated in isolation, and was not allowed to be accompanied by a lawyer.
    Moreover, sources informed that Hussain has again been summoned by the JIT on Saturday, June 3.

    The United Nations (UN) late Thursday night expressed its concern over the increasing tensions between Pakistan and India over the long-standing issue of Kashmir and the Line of Control (LoC), Geo News reported.
    UN Secretary-General António Guterres is at present analysing the situation in Kashmir, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, adding that the intergovernmental organisation is also perturbed by India?s firing at the LoC, which, thereby, violated the ceasefire agreement.
    Unprovoked firing on the part of Indian armed forces on the LoC earlier killed two Kashmiris and injured six others.
    In this regard, the Foreign Office of Pakistan summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner J.P. Singh to file a protest over the LoC violation and sent a demarche pertaining to the matter.

    KHANEWAL: Five people were killed and ten severely injured when a bus collided with a truck on the Kabirwala-Jhang road early Friday morning.
    Rescue sources said the bus, carrying around 50 passengers from Faisalabad to Multan, was speeding at a crossing when it collide with a truck.
    Rescue 1122 officials had to cut open the bus to rescue the passengers. Two of the injured, who were in critical condition, were transported to Nishtar Hospital, Multan whereas the rest were admitted to Kabirwala Tehsil Headquarters Hospital. 
    On May 15, at least four schoolchildren and a driver were killed and eight children critically injured when a speeding oil tanker crushed a school van in Multan.
    The accident had taken place on Makhdoom Rasheed Road when the oil tanker crushed the school van due to alleged speeding. 
    A total of 12 children were on their way home in the school van. According to rescue sources, the van had to be cut to extricate the children.
