    Alphabet-owned Waymo is putting its autonomous driving expertise to work in trucking, in a new track for the unit formerly known as Google Car.
    Tests taking place currently at a private track in California are to be followed up by trying out rigs, with drivers ready to take the wheels, on roads in Arizona later this year, according to Waymo.
    "We're taking our eight years of experience in building self-driving hardware and software and conducting a technical exploration into how our technology can integrate into a truck," a Waymo spokesperson told AFP Friday.
    The move ramps up Waymo's challenge to on-demand ride service Uber, which has been investing in technology for self-driving cars and trucks as part of its vision for the future of the San Francisco-based company.
    Uber this week said that it fired engineer Anthony Levandowski, accused in a trade secrets suit involving files he purportedly purloined from Waymo before leaving to establish a start-up focused on self-driving trucks.
    The case stems from a lawsuit filed in February by Waymo claiming former manager Levandowski took a trove of technical data with him when he left to launch a competing venture that went on to become Otto and was later acquired by Uber.
    Waymo argued in the lawsuit that a "calculated theft" of its technology netted Otto a buyout of more than $500 million and enabled Uber to revive a stalled self-driving car program.
    US-based Tesla is also stepping up efforts in autonomous driving and is set to launch its first semi-truck in September.

    Pakistan limited-overs captain Sarfraz Ahmed, on Friday, called Champions Trophy an important tournament for the team, and himself as a captain.

    Speaking in Geo News' show 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath', he said: "It's almost a mini World Cup for us, and most definitely very important for the whole team and myself as captain."
    "We have been training hard for the last 10-12 days of the camp here."
    He said the boys are putting in a lot of effort and they are all very determined.
    Responding to a question, he said that they are not relying on any particular player.
    "We have a strong middle order with Babar Azam, Hafeez and Shoaib Malik. These are the sort of players who can play a key role in our batting."
    "In bowling, we have Amir and Wahab Riaz, who can make a difference," he added.
    Talking about the strategy against India, the skipper said, "Undoubtedly, on paper, India is a strong side, but we plan to perform on the pitch and put in all our efforts to win the match."
    Pakistan will take on India on Sunday in its first game of the Champions Trophy 2017.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Naeem-ul-Haq has sent a Rs. 2-billion defamation notice to the premier?s daughter Maryam Nawaz for carrying out his fake media trial.

    The notice issued by Senior Advocate Babar Awan states that Maryam has scandalised Haq under the garb of a so-called legal notice sent on October 31, 2016. It adds that since the notice was circulated on national media it has caused the PTI spokesperson losses to tune of Rs2 billion.
    In the notice, Maryam has been asked to furnish within 15 days a copy of the full report of Dawn Leaks without any omission or cutting.
    The notice Maryam had sent to Haq stated that the latter had accused the former of being responsible for the leaking information discussed at a high-level national security meeting. It added that the accusation was defamatory, false, scandalous and did not have any evidence. ?The statement has been represented as if it is a true fact, which is not the case.?
    It further read that Maryam was not even a member of any security committee not she had access to any information, discussion or decisions taken at any such meeting. 
    'Nehal Hashmi, Tariq Fatemi were made scapegoats'
    A ?mafia? and their ?godfather? are involved in humiliating the institutions, while Nehal Hashmi, Pervaiz Rashid and Tariq Fatemi were made the scapegoats, said Haq.
    While talking to the media, the PTI spokesperson said attempts were being made to threaten the judiciary and make ineffective the Joint Investigation Team formed to probe the Panama case. 

    Hashmi's party membership was suspended after he made controversial remarks against the judiciary for probing the prime minister and his family over the Panama case, while Fatemi was removed from his position over the Dawn Leaks issue.

    RAWALPINDI: Two civilians were injured as Indian border forces once again violated the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) on Friday, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

    Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing in Nezapir Sector along the LoC this evening, the ISPR said in a statement.
    The gunfire resulted in injuries to two civilians, who were shifted to hospital.
    However, the Indian firing was effectively responded to by Pakistan Army troops, which silenced the enemy guns.

    BIRMINGHAM: Rain saw the Champions Trophy one-day international between Australia and New Zealand at Edgbaston on Friday end in a no result.
    Australia, set a revised target of 235 to win in 33 overs, were 53 for three off nine overs when the last of several rain interruptions took the players off the field.
    A minimum of 20 overs had to be bowled in Australia´s innings for a result to be possible but so severe was the final downpour that the umpires decided there was no possibility of getting to that mark within the scheduled playing hours.


    Both teams received a point apiece for the no result from what was their opening match of the 2017 Champions Trophy, a tournament featuring the world´s top eight one-day international teams.
    The main beneficiaries were Group A rivals and tournament hosts England, who launched this year´s edition with an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at the Oval on Thursday.
    New Zealand, who saw their innings reduced to 46 overs after a rain break of nearly two hours, made 291 all out in 45
    They lost their last seven wickets for 37 runs after captain Kane Williamson´s excellent innings of exactly 100.
    Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood took an ODI best six for 52.
    Earlier, Australia lost three early wickets in its 235-run chase against New Zealand in the 33 overs limit rain-hit match.

    The Australian opening stand, David Warner and Aaron Finch, were sent to pavilion by Trent Boult and Adam Milne respectively.
    Later, Adam Milne caught and bold Moises Henriques in the last delivery of eighth over of the match.

    John Hastings, however, restored some order for Australia when Ronchi found Glenn Maxwell at point to end a 43-ball innings featuring nine fours and three sixes.
    New Zealand were now 117 for two in the 16th over after a stand of 77 in 60 balls between Ronchi and Williamson.
    Williamson showed touch play could be effective too when he swept off-spinner Travis Head for a four between two legside fielders.
    Alongside Ross Taylor, he put on 99 for the third wicket before his experienced team-mate fell for 46 when he holed out to mid-off against Hastings.
    Williamson, however, hoisted Hastings for a legside six to go into the 90s before a flicked four and driven single off the same bowler saw him to a 96-ball century, his ninth at this level, with eight fours and three sixes.

    WASHINGTON: The CIA has named the hardline chief of its hunt for Osama bin Laden and head of its lethal drone program to lead Iran operations, the New York Times reported Friday.

    The choice of Michael D?Andrea to run the Central Intelligence Agency?s spying on Iran is the newest sign of the Trump administration?s turn to tougher stance against the country, the Times said, quoting intelligence community sources.
    Although officially under cover and not acknowledged by the CIA, D?Andrea, a convert to Islam who is around 60 years old, has been a key figure in the fight against extremists groups.
    He was chief of the agency?s Counter-Terrorism Center during the 2000s, in which he oversaw the hunt for Al-Qaeda head bin Laden.
    He also led the Obama administration?s controversial "targeted killing" program using drones that left thousands of militants and civilians dead, mainly in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
    His identity was publicly exposed by the Times in 2015 in the wake of a drone attack on a suspected militant house in Pakistan that killed two Western hostages, an American and an Italian, whose presence in the house had not been known.
    That led to his being moved out of the Counter-Terrorism Center that year, according to various news reports at the time.
    The choice of D?Andrea to run the CIA?s Iran operations was made by Mike Pompeo, who took a hard line against Iran and the Iran nuclear deal as a Republican congressman before President Donald Trump appointed him to be CIA director in January.
    Pompeo and D?Andrea could be key to administration attempts to ensure Iran is sticking to its commitments under the nuclear deal, or find violations that would support Trump?s campaign pledge to tear up the agreement.
    The report Friday also comes after Trump?s trip to Saudi Arabia two weeks ago. The CIA declined to comment on the Times report.

    The abandoned car in which the children got themselves locked up. ? Geo News screengrab MULTAN: Two children were suffocated in Shujabad on Friday after they were accidentally trapped inside an abandoned car, according to rescue members.

    Three minors while playing in a Shujabad street entered into a car, which was abandoned for months. The children accidentally got themselves locked inside the car, in intense hot and dry weather.
    The minors kept shouting for help but to no avail. By the time rescue workers reached, two of the three trapped children, Ali Hassan and Shehroz, were suffocated.
    Fortunately, the third child was rescued and reunited with his family.

    KARACHI: Former leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Saleem Shahzad has been released from prison, sources informed Geo News Friday.

    Shahzad, a member of the now defunct singular MQM, was arrested upon arrival at Karachi airport from Dubai on February 6.
    The former MQM leader, who had been living in London since 1992, was wanted by the Karachi police for various cases against him.

    Ex-MQM leader was arrested on arrival by SSP Malir, Rao Anwar and shifted to an undisclosed location.
    The most prominent and recent one was involving allegations made by former Petroleum Minister Dr. Asim Hussain that Shahzad had facilitated the medical treatment of terrorists and arranged shelter for them.
    A local court of Karachi has granted him bail in terrorist facilitation case against Rs0.5 million worth security bonds.
    He had also acquired bail in other cases registered against him.

    PARIS: Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi once famously pleaded for peace between India and Pakistan under the banner "Stop war, start tennis".

    However, the childhood friends will be rivals for around eight hours on Sunday when their two nations clash in the one sport which eternally unites and divides their countrymen -- cricket.
    Bopanna, the son of an Indian coffee planter, and Qureshi, whose grandfather was once the All India tennis champion before the 1947 partition, have their eyes trained towards Birmingham when India and Pakistan meet in the Champions Trophy.
    Qureshi, who will be in England for a tennis tournament after being knocked out of the French Open this week, hopes to get to the big game.
    Bopanna, 37, is so confident of India going all the way to the final at The Oval on June 18 that he has already bought tickets.
    Whatever happens, the two men, born just two weeks apart in 1980, insist that their friendship will survive, just as it has done since they met when they were 16.
    "Rohan is like a brother to me, on and off the court," Qureshi told AFP.
    "As countries, we have political differences but not me and him.
    "We have respect for each other and each other?s families. However, I don?t expect him to cheer for Pakistan and he wouldn?t expect me to cheer for India."
    Both men played cricket as youngsters before turning to tennis full-time.
    Bopanna was an all-rounder who liked to open the batting in his home city of Bangalore.

    Qureshi also enjoyed the all-rounder role, but with ball in hand, he steamed in, right-arm fast.
    Their mutual love of cricket saw them suffer contrasting emotions in 2007 when they were playing doubles together at a tournament in Mumbai.
    The event coincided with the first World Twenty20 championship being played in South Africa.
    India beat Pakistan in the final by five wickets.
    "We watched that game together in Mumbai and an hour later we had to go and play a match together," Bopanna told AFP.
    "But once we were on the tennis court, we had to focus. We ended up winning our match."
    The pair have always insisted that the political differences between their two nations do not impose on their tennis.
    In 2010, they played at Wimbledon, arriving on the grounds wearing T-shirts bearing the slogan: "Stop war, start tennis".
    Pakistan have beaten their longtime rivals twice in three Champions Trophy matches down the years.
    However, India hold the upper hand overall in international championship encounters -- they have never lost a 50-over World Cup or World Twenty20 showdown against Pakistan.
    India?s record reads 12 wins and just two losses.
    "It?s like roulette -- the ball can?t be black all the time, sometimes it has to be red, right?" said Qureshi.
    "India are the favourites. Pakistan has a young team, so you have to be realistic. But if we win, it will be a huge upset.
    "If we beat India and lose all the matches, the players will still go home as heroes.
    "But if we lose to India and win the trophy, everyone will just remember losing to India."
    Qureshi is an enthusiastic fan of the Pakistan team and all their idiosyncracies.
    When Pakistan toured New Zealand earlier this year, they shared the same Auckland hotel.
    "I travelled on the bus with them to the ground, took photos, got their autographs," he recalled.
    Bopanna sees India winning on Sunday and making the final for which he has already secured tickets.
    "It doesn?t matter what the tournament is or where the game is played, it?s always a big match," he said.
    "We are two great countries. Off the field, the players are friends; on it, they play to win."

    Fawad Chaudhry said that it was the government?s conspiracy to release the secured Whatsapp call.

    A young Zaki playing guitar in an undated picture KARACHI: Renowned Pakistani songwriter and guitarist Aamir Zaki passed away on Friday. He was aged 49.

    Zaki died of cardiac arrest, the musician's family confirmed to Geo News, adding that he was ailing for quite some time.
    Aamir Zaki began his musical journey when he was discovered by Alamgir. While touring with Alamgir, Zaki would play a Flying V guitar which he built himself.
    After his career as Alamgir?s lead guitarist, Aamir Zaki formed three rock bands The Barbarians, Axe Attack and Scratch.
    Amir Zaki joined Vital Signs as the group?s lead guitarist in 1994. A year later he released his debut solo album Signature. It was from this album that his most recognised solo song ?Mera Pyaar? became a hit. 
    The ace guitarist made his much-awaited debut on Coke Studio in 2014. 
    Aamir Zaki will be remembered as one of the finest guitar players to come out of Pakistan. 




    Following the musician?s death, there was an outpour of grief on social media.

    Umerkot police told Geo.tv that the accused Dr Jaam Kunbhar has been arrested while raids were being conducted to arrest the other two doctors ?Dr Yousuf and Dr Allah Dad Rathore? involved in the incident.
    The case was registered under section 319, 34 PPC against six suspects including three doctors on behalf of the father of the Irfan Maseeh.

    Lying in a corner of Civil Hospital Umerkot, sewer cleaner Irfan Maseeh kept gasping for breath, his family members pleaded with the hospital staff to treat him, but the senior doctor at the facility refused to touch his sludge-covered body.

    "Dr Yousuf said he would not touch Irfan's dirty body until it was cleaned because he was fasting," the deceased's brother Pervaiz Maseeh told Geo.tv. "I cleaned his body, after which an oxygen pump was sent for Irfan, but that was empty."
    The doctor's negligent response to the emergency situation and lack of facilities at the hospital, left Irfan to succumb to death.
    Irfan had dived down to clean a manhole Thursday morning when he fell unconscious after inhaling poisonous gases trapped inside, Pervaiz said. 
    He added, one after another two more men jumped inside to save those trapped, but all fell unconscious due to the same reason.
    Pervaiz had reached the site after people in the area informed him of the incident.
    "When they were eventually taken out, I put Irfan on my back and rushed him to the hospital," the bereaved brother said. "A rickshaw driver stopped us on the way and gave us his vehicle to carry Irfan to the hospital as quickly as possible."
    But he could not be saved despite all the efforts people around him made to resuscitate him.

    ISLAMABAD: National Security Adviser, Lt Gen (retd) Nasser Janjua Friday said Pakistan attaches great importance to ties with Iran and is committed to overcoming all obstacles to maintain the bond between the two neighbouring countries.
    The NSA was speaking to Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran, Mehdi Honardoost, who called on him here and discussed matters pertaining to enhancement of bilateral relations and issues of security and border management.
    The adviser stressed that this is a time for two countries to come further closer instead of drifting away from each other.
    Both sides agreed to boost up level of cooperation in multiple areas to strengthen bilateral relations.
    The ambassador raised an issue Iran is facing about interaction between the banking sectors of the two countries, which is a huge obstacle in enhancing the volume of bilateral trade.
    Nasser Janjua ensured the ambassador that concerned authorities would be sensitised to take adequate measures to facilitate trade with Iran through better banking interactions.
    The two sides also agreed to improve border management through better coordination and cooperation.

    The premier's son reached the Federal Judicial Academy ? the office of the JIT ? at around 10am to record his statement and left at 5pm.
    Hassan Nawaz did not speak to the media after leaving the Federal Judicial Academy.

    The JIT is investigating the prime minister's family?s global financial dealings in light of the Supreme Court's April 20 judgment.

    Strict security measures were in place in light of the premier's son's arrival at the venue. Hassan did not speak to the media as no one was allowed to come close to his motorcade, including his personal security staff.

    The premier's son brought with him some documents as well which he took with him.
    Sources said Hassan ? a businessman ? recently arrived in Pakistan from London after receiving summons from the JIT.

    On Thursday, the premier?s elder son, Hussain Nawaz, appeared for the third time in front of the JIT.
    After spending around six hours with the JIT, Hussain emerged out of the building and briefly spoke to the media.
    ?If the matters proceed in a fair manner then it?s fine otherwise we would present the issue before the Supreme Court and public,? said Hussain.
    Hussain informed that he has been summoned again by the JIT for the next session. ?I was made to wait for two hours,? he said, adding whoever the JIT summons has to appear before it.
    Hassan Nawaz fails to appear before JIT
    Sources, however, told Geo News that the Sharif family has claimed that Hassan Nawaz was summoned by the JIT today
    He also claimed that no evidence will be found of any irregularity against him, his father or any sibling in the investigation.
    The premier?s son said that he was interrogated in isolation, and was not allowed to be accompanied by a lawyer.
    Moreover, sources informed that Hussain has again been summoned by the JIT on Saturday, June 3.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Spokesperson Naeem-ul-Haq has sent a notice to the premier?s daughter Maryam Nawaz, demanding Rs2 billion as compensation for carrying out his fake media trial.
    The notice issued by Senior Advocate Babar Awan states that Maryam has scandalised Haq under the garb of a so-called legal notice sent on October 31, 2016. It adds that since the notice was circulated on national media it has caused the PTI spokesperson losses to tune of Rs2 billion.
    In the notice, Maryam has been asked to furnish within 15 days a copy of the full report of Dawn Leaks without any omission or cutting.
    The notice Maryam had sent to Haq stated that the latter had accused the former of being responsible for the leaking information discussed at a high-level national security meeting. It added that the accusation was defamatory, false, scandalous and did not have any evidence. ?The statement has been represented as if it is a true fact, which is not the case.?
    It further read that Maryam was not even a member of any security committee not she had access to any information, discussion or decisions taken at any such meeting.

    PATNA: A teenager was arrested in the Indian state of Bihar for allegedly writing a pro-Pakistan slogan as a Facebook post, NDTV reported on Friday.

    The 15-year-old was arrested by local police after he posted ?Pakistan Zindabad? along with his photograph on Facebook.
    According to a police official, local approached law enforcers and demanded action against the teenager for hurting sentiments.
