Be it the La Liga, the Champions League, or the World Cup, every tournament invariably becomes about these two – Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It has been 10 years since these two have dominated the world stage by winning all the Ballon D'Or trophies between them. The world has never been fixated on and divided by just two players so much. Yes, we still have the Pele vs Maradona debate but their careers hardly overlapped in terms of playing years.
Cup after cup, Messi has been carrying the expectations of not just his own nation, Argentina, but of millions of fans who worship him and consider him to be from another planet. It's an open secret that if Leo manages to lift the World Cup, he will stamp his authority as the greatest player of all time. However, the World Cup has eluded Messi. He came within touching distance of lifting it in 2014, but an extra time stunner by Goetze saw Germany lifting the cup.
Last night, people from around the world witnessed the brilliance of Ronaldo, when he struck 3 goals, taking his hat-trick tally to 51. What's more special is that he managed to score the goals against a formidable Spanish squad and, arguadbly, the world's best goalkeeper De Gea. He lit up the World Cup and gave an open challenge to Messi after stroking his chin while celebrating the first goal. It was an inkling that he's the G.O.A.T. – Greatest of all time.
They are such fierce competitors that both of them up their game after seeing the other perform. Will Messi be able to give the world reasons to celebrate ecstatically, just like Ronaldo did last night? Or will the pressure weigh too heavily on him as Argentina face World Cup debutants Iceland up first? We hope for the former!
Messi vs Ronaldo at the World Cups
The legends are almost neck-to-neck as far as records are concerned -

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are Bollywood's 'IT' couple at the moment, and their blooming romance is the talk of the town. Not only did he finally open up about dating her, Alia was also seen spending quality time with Ranbir's family.
The news of the two superstars dating threw many off and also broke millions of hearts. However, we are uber excited to see how they keep giving us couple goals. The pair will be seen together on the big screen for the first time in their upcoming movie 'Brahmastra'.
While Alia has always been vocal about her love and admiration for Ranbir, he finally spoke about her in an interview with a leading magazine.
Talking about this new equation, Ranbir said, “I think every human being does extraordinary things only when they are in love. So I believe that love is something which is a privilege if it comes in your life and to be in happy, beautiful positive place a relationship with it could be with a girl a guy, with a friend your mother your father or anybody but when there is some genuine love, it's really beautiful."

Also recently, in an interview with Rajeev Masand, Ranbir credited Aloo for bringing positivity into his life. He said, “It's only positive and more so because we are working on a film together and I really admire her as an actor. To see her have so much of colour, so much of spontaneity, so much hard work, so much of discipline (extremely disciplined) is quite rare. It's amazing. It's been 10 years for me in this industry, little lethargy, a little chalta hai type attitude comes in. So it's rejuvenating for me as an actor to be with Alia.”
Well, that's an interesting revelation for sure, and something that definitely proves that they are indeed growing and moving full steam ahead in this relationship.

In 2016, when he broke up with Katrina Kaif, he had spoken of how he wants to fall in love again. Talking about it he had said, “I want to get married, I want to have children and I will do it in the right way. I will meet a light-minded person and fall madly, truly and deeply in love and just take it from there.”

The way Ranbir has been talking about Alia of late, just makes us wonder if he has finally found his one true love, again?
Drenched in patriotism, the new teaser of Akshay Kumar's 'Gold' is finally here, and it is giving everyone goosebumps and a surge of patriotism as well. Saying that we are impressed would be an understatement because by far, this is the best movie teaser we have seen this year.
(c) Excel Entertainment
With every movie, Akshay Kumar keeps setting the benchmark higher and this teaser only proves that he can give any actor a run for their money. If you haven't seen the teaser yet, get ready to feel a rush of emotions.

The teaser begins with a statement which says, "Please stand up for the national anthem". While most of us wait to hear the familiar strains of our National Anthem, it begins with the British anthem 'God Save The Queen' instead. First few seconds and we are already unsettled.
The 54-second clip clearly sets the fact straight showing how for 200 years, Indians were being forced to stand for the British national anthem, taking us back to colonial India and the British oppression.
(c) Excel Entertainment
Soon we get a glimpse of Akshay Kumar and we just can't help but whistle. With a burning passion in his eyes, he is seen taking out the Indian national flag and that gives us an idea of his goal. The teaser then focuses on 'one man's dream' that 'made the British stand up for our anthem'.
(c) Excel Entertainment
Despite us already knowing the basic theme of the story, which is freedom from British oppression, there still is a sense of mystery as to how this one man will get the gold for India.. The teaser ends with "Vande Mataram” leaving us with millions of thoughts and unsaid emotions.

For those of you who don't know what 'Gold' is all about, it is the story of a Bengali hockey player, who wants to win a gold medal for India, during the British rule.
Taking to Twitter Akshay Kumar shared the new teaser on the public's demand.

If the teaser alone has managed to shake us to our very core, we can only wonder what the trailer has in store for us.
Directed by Reema Kagti, the film traces the journey of a hockey player and talks about what it meant to be patriotic during the pre-independence era. This will also be TV actor Mouni Roy's Bollywood debut.
(c) Excel Entertainment
Earlier, it was being said that 'Gold' is a biopic on former hockey player Balbir Singh Sr. However, clearing the air, Producer Ritesh Sidhwani stated in an interview that, “It is not a biopic. It is a completely fictional story but it is set against a real backdrop between 1933-48 India about what the country was, the sports...about hockey. It is not based on any character.”
Check out the teaser here and let us know what you think:
It's a familiar sight of footballers being criticised for their errors, especially when the player is a goalkeeper and lets in a few goals. Loris Karius endured continued criticism in the aftermath of the Champions League Final, and now there seems to be a flurry of criticism coming David de Gea's way after his performance against Portugal.
David de Gea was playing in his first ever World Cup game and did not expect it to end the way it did. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick past the Manchester United shot-stopper, and of those, de Gea was heavily criticised for two of the goals. More than anything, fans were surprised at his errors, as it is so uncharacteristic of him. But he is human and very much likely to make a mistake or two or have a bad game for that matter.
Many keepers careers have ended or taken a dip following such performances, but de Gea is a different breed regarding mentality and personality. This is not his first error of such magnitude; he has made mistakes in the past which have let the opposing teams score goals. But judging by his overall quality and his class of goalkeeping, those mistakes are easily ignored and so will the ones against Portugal if de Gea improves his performances for Spain.
Penalties are a real tough one for any goalkeeper, so naturally one cannot blame de Gea for the goal. However, for the second, Ronaldo hit a straight shot at him with his left foot and in a moment of misjudgement or a lapse in concentration, he couldn't grip the ball and it went into the net. But the third goal was where he bottled it. At a crucial stage with Spain leading the game, Ronaldo steps up and expertly puts the ball in the net to score from a brilliant direct free-kick. De Gea could not do anything despite looking to dive, because his positioning was flawed right from the start. He positioned himself extremely off the direction Ronaldo was expected to kick.
Ironically, de Gea, in the build-up to this World Cup is considered the best goalkeeper in the world, considering Manuel Neuer's injury lay off. But he did not play like one against Portugal. In fact, he looked short on confidence as well as nervous on such a big stage. The third goal, in particular, showed what a terrible game he was having on the night. But these are expected to be normal for even high profile players when they play the World Cup. Despite the many tweets and pundits criticising him for his performance, this in no way is the end of the goalkeeper's time. De Gea is fully expected to recover from this wicked game, and there is no doubt he will continue to remain Spain's No. 1, at the World Cup or otherwise.
Everyone knows that Cristiano Ronaldo does Cristiano Ronaldo things. However, as CR 7 was implicated of tax evasion by Spanish authorities, the troll army was ready to deride him yet again. And Cristiano Ronaldo made a mockery of his haters, for the millionth time by scoring a hat-trick against the nation whose judicial system had implicated him earlier in the day.
Make no mistake, Ronaldo is not a man born for the big occasion, he IS the big occasion. Spain might have had their flurry of superstars, but Portugal only had him to look up to. Their gamechanger, their talisman. On a day when you escape being imprisoned, you would normally keep a low profile and thank the Gods. But this is Cristiano Ronaldo we're talking about.
As he stepped onto the field on Friday evening, he looked as unfazed as ever. He was up against his club team mates and close friends, who would seemingly know all the tricks he had up his sleeve. Just as the game had started and some of us were still grabbing our seats, Ronaldo, did his trademark stepover on Nacho, his Real Madrid team mate, and earned himself a penalty. And then there was only ever going to be one outcome. In just the 4th minute, he scored a penalty in Portugal's first match at Russia 2018. And he celebrates by rubbing his imaginary “GOATee” on his chin. Audacious, cheeky, brilliant.
However, as the game went on, Ronaldo cut a frustrated, lonesome figure up front as Spain had begun to impose themselves on the game. But, right at the stroke of half time, against the run of play, Ronaldo tried a hopeful shot against, arguably, the best goalkeeper in the world and it somehow results in a goal. Ronaldo, the ultimate poacher, quite simply, had the footballing Gods shining on him.
Despite all his brilliance, Spain, after half-time, exerted themselves in a manner they're best known for. Goals from Diego Costa and Nacho meant Portugal were now trailing. With the way things had been going, there was only one man who could've changed the course of the game. And cometh the moment, cometh the man. As Portugal were given a free kick late in the game, we witnessed an all too familiar routine. The rolled up shorts, legs spread wide open on the ground, the deep breaths and a laser eye focussed at the goal. We all knew what he was going to do, and he did just that. A free kick rifled into the top corner with the Spanish goalkeeper not even attempting to stop it. A classic World Cup encounter culminated in Cristiano Ronaldo's moment of magic. What a player! What a man!
The World Cup has only just begun and Cristiano Ronaldo has already given us moments we will relive long after it is over. While the other half of football supporters and pundits continue to root for Messi as the G.O.A.T, he has a tough job on his hands if he is to catch his eternal rival. With 3 goals and powerful performance already in the bag, Ronaldo may well land either of the Golden Boot/Golden Ball and legitimately stake claim to the crown for the G.O.A.T.
The stand-out fixture of the group stages lived up to all the pre-match expectations as Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick helped Portugal secure a draw against Spain in a six goal thriller. Julen Lopetegui's interim replacement Fernando Hierro was denied an opening match win, having seen his side twice come from a goal down before finally taking the lead through Nacho's sledge hammer strike.
Here are the talking points from a highly entertaining spectacle at Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi.
Big players step up when the stakes are high. Ronaldo did more than just that as he sealed the 51st hat-trick of his career with a sublime free-kick that curled inside David De Gea's left-hand post. The match had looked all set and won for the La Roja at one point but the Portuguese star had other ideas. At 33 years and 130 days, Ronaldo is now the oldest man to score thrice in a World Cup game.
Diego Costa scored two goals that put doubts over his understanding of the Spanish philosophy to bed, once and for all. The Ex-Chelsea man experienced an uneventful outing in the last World Cup, where he seemed to have been rushed to the Spain set-up. This time around, the robust, talismanic presence of Costa troubled the Portuguese backline all night. His goals, the first one in particular, characterised everything about an outstanding individual display. It was a sheer mix of strength, awareness and accuracy as he feinted his way around the Selecção das Quinas defenders before firing an unstoppable driven strike past Rui Patricio.
The boy from Benalmadena symbolised everything that was exemplary about Spain, and he wasn't far from an early goal of the tournament contender either, with his first-half thunderbolt that rattled the crossbar. He operated in the No.10 position just behind Costa, but was given a license to roam allowing him to orchestrate attacks both laterally and vertically. Be it breaching through the opposing midfield lines with precise passing, or troubling them with his solo runs, Isco ran the show for the 2010 champions.
It was the Cristiano Ronaldo show on display in Sochi last night. He scored a hat-trick vs Spain, a team he had never scored against. With a penalty, a shot from just outside the box and a free kick, the 33-year-old announced himself as an early contender for the Golden Boot in 2018. Here are 5 records set when the Iberian rivals played their opening fixture in Group B:
Spain's abysmal opening match record continues
Spain has either lost or drawn their last three opening games at a World Cup including 2018. 2014 saw them lose an incredible 5-1 to a Netherlands side which had that special Van Persie goal and Robben marauding down the wings. Four years earlier, they lost to Switzerland by a goal and went on to become the only World Champions to lose their opening fixture.
Portugal's fastest goal since 1966
Ronaldo's 4th minute penalty conversion was Portugal's fastest ever goal in a World Cup since 1966. 52 years ago, Jose Augusto scored in the very first minute in a 3-1 win against Hungary, a tournament where they finished third under the legendary Eusebio.
The first 3-3 draw since 2002
The game in Sochi ended a 3-3 draw between Spain and Portugal and this has happened for the first time since 2002. Back then, Uruguay and Senegal played out a 3-3 tie in the group stage, with the African side going on to reach the quarterfinals.
Ronaldo is the oldest player to score a hat-trick
At 33 years and 130 days, the Portuguese star overtook Netherlands forward Rob Rensenbrink, who was 31 when he scored a hat-trick against Iran in 1978. Ronaldo now has 51 career hat-tricks and also scored the 51st hat-trick at World Cup's.
You're probably here because you want to know how to get a match on Tinder. It's alright. We understand. Been there, done that. You have come to the right place. Here are some tricks which would make your profile more presentable.
The first picture matters the most. Put something of good quality and appealing background, like, mountains or sea. Just make sure your upper half of body is clearly visible. Don't put a group picture or a selfie. Also, avoid sunglasses in the first picture.
Looking hot after that rigorous workout and clicked a shirtless mirror selfie? Well, don't put it on tinder. 'Nudity on tinder is directly proportional to dumbness,' this is what most women think. Put a picture in nicely fitting clothes if you want to show off your body.
Don't make all six pictures mundane. Be versatile; put one with your dog (neighbour's dog would also do, just make sure you know its name), one when you're on a trip and one in formals (office picture would also do). Here you want to show you're full of life!
Ask your friends about your best pictures.
If you're too shy to do that, use the photofeeler website to know which picture looks best from other people's perspective. It's free!
This is the Amit Shah of Tinder (second most important thing). Don't leave it blank unless you're Ranbir Kapoor. Write something funny, but don't pick up from the first link of google search. Keep it short, quirky and witty. Funny one-liners like “The only 'F' word out of a woman's mouth that scares me is 'Fine!'” works. Just write something which would make her chuckle.
After a good opening line, mention your interests in short sentences or in one word. Don't write an autobiography. 'Fun, easy going, traveller' works but it's quite clichéd unless your pictures show it. Remember, pictures should reflect your hobbies and interests.
Writing 'Sapiosexual' is a BIG NO. Trust me on this one.
'Not here for hook-ups' is also a no-no. If you genuinely aren't there for hook-ups, write 'looking for something stable.'
Work & Education
This is the part where you can show off the most and it really matters. Put out your college tag if it's a renowned college. (IIM and IIT tags work like a charm). But you might want to keep the column blank if it's a private college where you don't even need an entrance test to get admission.
Write down the name of the company. It doesn't matter where you work. As John Lennon said, “A working class hero is something to be.” You have better chances of getting a match if your profile shows that you're working.
Show off your designation, but don't lie. While writing Assistant Manager is good, but you would get caught eventually if you're not one. You can play with words here though. For instance, if you're a software engineer, you can write Technical Specialist.
Don't swipe randomly on every profile. It decreases your chances to get a match. Tinder might put you under bot category and not show your profile to other users. 30-70% swipe right rate is considered ideal.
Take your time before you swipe. Open the profile and thoroughly check out pictures and bio. See if you genuinely find her interesting. Again, take your time before swiping right.
Be aware of fake profiles. Restrain yourself from swiping right on a profiles with no picture or just one picture. It could be a bot or some guy trolling people.
Last but not the least, be yourself! Women catch it when you fake it. Don't try too hard but then don't act aloof.
May the force be with you!
World Cup openers are supposed to be fiery encounters that not only get the fans adrenaline high, but also make the neutrals well up with emotions. The Russian goal fest against Saudi Arabia did get the World Cup 2018 started on a good note, but it was never supposed to be a great display of footballing talent. When it comes to a hotly contested match, all eyes will be on Portugal vs Spain – one of the most anticipated games of the group stages. It is the kind of game that we'd have loved to open the World Cup with.
While Portugal will be looking to capitalize on Spain's coach crisis, the Spanish armada will want to brush aside any disheartening vibes that have been building up over the past couple of days. They would be looking for a chance to show the world that the hallmark of a true champion is standing up during times of crisis.
The Iberian derby will see the presence of some of the greatest players in modern football, with 5-time Ballon D'Or winner Ronaldo captaining the Portuguese side and many Real Madrid and Barcelona stalwarts such as Iniesta, Ramos, and Isco playing for the Spaniards.
Spain's interim coach Fernando Hierro, who was a Real Madrid star himself, will certainly have plans to stop Ronaldo, but when it comes to the midfield battle, the Spaniards have a clear edge. The current Spanish midfield is being hailed as the golden generation of midfielders, and one that will give the coach selection dilemma.
The Iberian derby has taken place 35 times, and Spain have by far been the better team with 21 wins as compared to Portugal's 6. In their last game at the FIFA World Cup 2010, Spain edged past Portugal 1-0.
Spain will line up 4-3-3.
Portugal are expected to line up 4-4-2.
At the turn of the century, Portugal managed to escape years of footballing anonymity and has since appeared in every major international tournament. Having boasted the likes of Luis Figo, Deco, Cristiano Ronaldo in their starting XI's over the years, one would imagine that Portugal can always be a safe bet to perform at the grandest stage. However, it's one of the teams that's caused punters and bookkeepers to lose a lot of money. Simply because, there has been no pattern to their success.
Successes in the earlier part of the century were followed by ignominious World Cup exits in 2010 and 2014. However, just when everyone had lowered their expectations of them, they sprung up with the biggest surprise of all by winning Euro 2016, cruelly denying France a victory on home turf.
A script eerily similar to the Euro 2004 final, when Portugal found themselves on the receiving end. Under lowered expectations, Portugal had well and truly left a mark on the world of football.
As pundits continued to decipher the shock victory, a consensus had emerged that the Portuguese manager had built a strong and rigid defense, given that the attack was marshalled by a well-known entity called Cristiano Ronaldo.
Santos' men carried their momentum and proved to be an extremely tough opposition to beat as they lost just twice in 2017.
However, since the turn of the year, the cracks have begun to appear in the Portuguese defense. Out of 4 matches played in 2018, Portugal have won just once, against Egypt, thanks to two injury time goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, drawn twice, and lost once to Netherlands, having conceded three goals in that match.
If their Euro 2016 win exuded confidence in the neutrals, their recent run of form dampens the mood. Critics will rightly point to an ageing defense, consisting of Jose Fonte, Pepe and Bruno Alves, who are 34, 35 and 36 respectively and past their best years. Portugal's defense, although well organised from a tactical perspective, may well serve as its Achilles' heel.
Assessing Portugal's chances at the World Cup seems as hard as ever. While, the attacking aspect seems to have taken care of itself, it is the defense that should give Santos sleepless nights. Compared player to player, Spain are a superior side on paper, while Morocco and Iran, will be no pushovers in Group B.
However, given the wealth of talent and title winning experience in squad, Portugal are likely to get through this group, and anything less than a run till the quarter finals will be considered disappointing.
Given their recent success, one would imagine that Fernando Santos would stick to the same youthful side of 2016. However, surprisingly, Santos has axed 10 players from that squad with the biggest casualties being the Young Player of the Tournament in 2016 Renato Sanches, Andre Gomes, Eliseu and Nani (who has 100 caps btw), all of whom have had indifferent, if not miserable domestic seasons.
They have deservedly been replaced by the likes of Bernardo Silva, Gelson Martins, Goncalo Guedes and Andre Silva. Their selections clearly depict that Santos is not afraid of making bold decisions and is ready to put his faith in youth and form. Moreover, Santos is likely to rely heavily on Bernardo Silva, who offers creativity, slick one touch passing and long range shooting from midfield, something Portugal have been accused of lacking in the last two years.
Above all, it is Silva's ability to operate from both, midfield and forward positions which makes him so indispensable to this squad. He comes on the back of two title winning campaigns with Monaco and Manchester City, and it is this match winning mentality which Portugal will need if they are to succeed in Russia.
In spite of all the youth, Portugal will look towards their talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the team. Come the end of the year, he will be taking part in his yearly ceremony at the Ballon D'Or. But, few would've expected him to be there at the turn of the year. As critics continued to write him off, Ronaldo, yet again, proved them wrong with a spectacular run of form in the La Liga and the Champions League and finished the season with 44 goals and yet another Champions League.
If Portugal are to succeed, he must serve as their inspiration on the pitch. As for anyone doubting his leadership qualities, one only needs to be reminded of his performance from the dugout in the Euro 2016 final when he cheered, screamed and encouraged the players on the pitch to step up in his stead, after injury had forced him off.
No matter how many movies released this year, the first half was owned by Ranveer Singh for his exceptional portrayal of mad king Alauddin Khilji, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus 'Padmaavat'. And if the rumours are anything to go by, then the second half of the year too will be pretty much owned by him. Although the movie received mixed reactions, Bollywood lovers stood unanimously in favour of this being Ranveer's best performance so far.
But, after the release of the jaw-dropping trailer of 'Sanju', things changed and so did people's interest. What was meant to be a movie that will take us through the life of Sanjay Dutt has now become a movie about “Who did it better: Sanjay Dutt or Ranbir Kapoor?” And for this, the entire credit goes to Ranbir Kapoor for looking so convincing.
Fox Star Studios
Now while the two actors are doing great in their own respective acting careers and possibly two of the best actors in Bollywood right now, they have never come together in any movie. Call it lack of an interesting script for them, their personal equations (in the past) or just the fact that the directors never thought of it; but there's no denying that we all have been secretly wishing for the two to come together in a movie.
And we guess we are not the only ones wishing for it, Ranbir Kapoor too thinks on the similar lines. Reportedly, in a recent conversation with Rajeev Masand, the actor said that he is a big fan of Ranveer and wants to work with him in a movie that's similar to 'Karan Arjun' or 'Andaz Apna Apna'. He said, “To cast two actors who have their own sensibilities is very hard because both have to like the material, it can't just be another project. But I really want to work with him also because I am a big fan of his work. I thought he was spectacular in Padmaavat and every other thing that he has done.”
He also spoke about Ranveer's acting prowess and his energy. “Every advertisement he does, he stands out, his energy stands out…his talent speaks so much. So, I want to do a film with him but it has to be the right film. It could be like a 'Karan Arjun' or a 'Andaz Apna Apna' or a 'Deewar', it could be any genre but it has to be something that both od us connect to and like,” he said.
To all the directors - Guys, are you listening? Now that even Ranbir wants to do a movie, can we please get one soon.

'La Furia Roja' or 'The Red Fury' are no strangers to success at the grandest stage. After years of perennial underachievement, the Spanish formed an indomitable unit filled with world class talent in each position as they won three tournaments back to back in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Their group stage exit in the 2014 World Cup shocked the world, journalists and pundits were quick to write them off as a superpower of the yesteryears.
More fuel was added to these premature prophecies after the Spanish had an underwhelming Euro 2016 campaign. However, as a new generation has stepped up to the fold, those who were quick to write off the Spanish may be caught eating their own words.
As Julen Lopetegui took over from Vicente Del Bosque in 2016, it wasn't met with much fanfare or excitement. However, little did the world know that the Spanish FA had perfectly executed a succession plan years in the making. Lopetegui, who, prior to his appointment, had spent 4 years with the Spanish youth teams, was quick to instil faith in those he had previously coached, and shed the old guard for the new.
The likes of Thiago, Isco and Koke, replaced Cesc Fabregas and Pedro, and they were quick to repay the manager's confidence. Such has been the dominance of this Spanish side, that they are unbeaten since their loss to Italy in Euro 2016. In 19 games since Euro 2016, the Spanish have drawn 6 and won 13, and scored a remarkable 60 goals while conceding just 13 goals. By any measure, this Spanish side is one of the favourites to lift the trophy on 15th July.
However, the most alarming fact about this team is that they boast a world cup winning squad consisting of players who have NOT been selected for the world cup. The 4 of the 5 Spanish players at Chelsea, consisting of Cesc Fabregas, Pedro, Marcos Alonso and Alvaro Morata have not made the cut. Neither have Hector Bellerin, Juan Bernat, Marc Bartra, Vitolo and Javi Martinez.
Most, if not all of these players have the calibre to represent any other international side in the world, but not this Spanish team. Amongst those who have made the cut, David De Gea, the world's best goalkeeper at the moment is an undoubted starter. As are football's eternal bastards in Sergio Ramos, who will captain the side, and Gerard Pique, both of whom will marshal their defence. They will be flanked by the speedy and ever reliable duo of Dani Carvajal and Jordi Alba.
Cesar Azpilicueta, arguably the Premier League's best defender, has championed each of the back 4 positions and is more than just a capable backup. The midfield, presents an entirely different conundrum altogether. The Spanish have always oozed of creative options from midfield, and this year is no different.
Sergio Busquets and Thiago Alcantara will serve as deep lying playmakers, who are imperious in their passing and possess the game intelligence to cut the opposition's passing lines. Assisting them, in the tiki taka and the high press play are likely to be Isco, Andres Iniesta and David Silva, each of whom can strike daggers in the hearts of any defence and any point of time during the game. David Silva and Andres Iniesta, two legends of the game, who are almost certainly playing their last world cup, will look to hurt the opposition with their silky movement. Finally, in the No. 9 position, is another footballing thug in Diego Costa, who will look to bully opposition defenders with his physical play.
In the event that any one of these players is injured, Spain's fluid style of play means that the likes of Saul, Marco Asensio, Koke, Lucas Vazquez and Iago Aspas can come in and fill a variety of positions. The reassurance of a strong bench, the world class talent on display, the experience in the side, and a good form coming into the tournament, all of these things form the perfect recipe for a World Cup winning squad which might set the standard for the rest of the teams. With everything pointing in the right direction, an exit prior to the semi-finals would be considered a major disappointment.
Goalkeepers: David De Gea, Pepe Reina, Kepa
Morocco have qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 20 years. Their most recent accomplishments include an Arab Cup win in 2012 followed by appearances in the 2013 and 2017 editions of the African Cup of Nations. Neutrals would be tempted to rule them out as bystanders. However, on a closer look, that might not necessarily be the case.
There has been little debate about the “Group of Death” in this World Cup, Morocco's steady rise in recent years means that they could well be the giant killers of this group. The man who has led this revolution at Morocco, is little known French manager called Herve Renard.
In 2004, Herve Renard was sacked as the manager of Cambridge United after the club found themselves bottom of the League Two table. The club was subsequently relegated from the Football League and for Renard, a career in footballing abyss seemed imminent. Since then, he has led a Zambia to a surprising win at the 2012 African Cup of Nations.
Several uninspiring managerial stints later, he led the Ivory Coast to the 2015 edition of the African Cup of Nations and in doing so, became the first manager to win the AFCON with different teams. Clearly, he's been doing something right all along. Known for his affable personality, Renard has acquired a reputation as a hard task master who focuses on each and every detail.
His focus on fitness, and organizing a defence, often produces teams that are hard to beat as the players playing under him often outperform their own abilities. Combine this with his penchant for innovative in-game tactics, and we have a French Marcelo Bielsa.
Since he took over the reins as the head coach in February 2016, Morocco stayed unbeaten in 2016. After a disappointing exit in the 2017 AFCON, Morocco have lost just 2 of their last 13 matches, a run which has included admirable wins against South Korea and Serbia. Moreover, Morocco stayed unbeaten in their world cup qualification group which included the might of Ivory Coast.
However, a more pressing statistic is that, in those 13 games, the Moroccan team conceded only 6 goals and kept 6 clean sheets. Clearly, Renard has brought discipline to this defensive unit. It is this defensive rigidity which may serve as a huge asset against the likes of Spain, as the Moroccan defence spearheaded by their captain Mehdi Benatia, will look to block that final ball.
Apart from Benatia, the defence consists of Romain Saiss, who comes on the back of a championship winning season with Wolves, and Nabil Dirar from Fenerbahce. Between the three of them, they have 113 international caps and plenty of experience of European football at the domestic level. Their midfield will be spearheaded by Younes Belhanda and Mbark Boussoufa, who will serve as the creative outlet going forward.
However, the player who is turning most heads is Hakim Ziyech. The 25 year old had a spectacular year with Ajax, where he contributed 9 goals and 15 assists. He is renowned for his technique and free kick taking ability, which has interested many European clubs, specifically Roma. If the Moroccan defence lives up to its billing, it is Ziyech who may chip in with an unlikely winner.
Spain and Portugal may still be the runaway favourites to qualify from Group B, but no one is likely to bet heavily on Morocco being pushovers. A disciplined defensive showing against the Iberian giants may well open up the way for a threatening counter attack and lead to an unlikely goal.
It may sound like an optimistic call, but Morocco, under Renard, may just spring surprises and bagging that second qualification spot.
