Meet Dr. Kafeel Ahmed Who Single-Handedly Arranged For Oxygen Supply & Saved Lives In Gorakhpur

We all have grown up binging on our favourite superhero movies and novels. From Superman, Batman and Hulk to Captain America, Wonder Woman and Spiderman; everyone loves to fantasize about heroes saving the world with their superpowers. What if we tell you there are superheroes living with us in the real world? Well, don't look for anyone wearing cape or an uber-cool costume because we just found our superhero in Dr. Kafeel Ahmed Khan, who fought against all odds and answered the call of duty at a time when everyone else lost hope.

All hell broke loose at Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, when the oxygen supply was allegedly disrupted, owing to the supplier's dues pending at the administration's end. The families were left with no option, but to see their loved ones collapse in pain and die in front of them. At that very moment, Dr. Ahmed, the pediatrician in charge of the encephalitis ward, took things in his own hands. From giving necessary instructions to the junior doctors and hospital staff to showing the attendants how to provide artificial respiration to patients, Dr. Kafeel left no stone unturned in providing help to the people at the earliest.

While the authorities and the government were apparently busy plying the blame game, Dr. Kafeel immediately sprung into action and was running around in his car in search of oxygen cylinders. It was definitely not an easy task for him and he was refused several times by the suppliers, but there was one who agreed to give his oxygen supply on a condition that the entire payment had to be made in advance in cash. However, he didn't think twice and quickly sent one of his staff members to get the cash, using his debit card. He even paid for the fuel to the truck drivers to get the cylinders. He not only called up all the suppliers in the district, but also personally requested and borrowed oxygen cylinders from nursing homes of his close friends, so that some lives can be saved in the nick of time.

However, while things seemed to be working out, Dr. Ahmed got to know that the gas agency that agreed to provide cylinders has now backed out and he still had to provide sufficient oxygen to all the children in the ward. It was after some desperate attempts that he finally saw a ray of hope as one supplier agreed to give him oxygen cylinders. Reportedly, he managed to bring 12 more cylinders from other nursing homes and saved may people who could have been a part of this fatal incident.

However, despite all his hard work and efforts, he still had to witness the tragic death of over 60 children in front of him and nearly 30 died in less than 48 hours. People are lauding the efforts of this unsung hero and are thanking him for taking necessary actions instead of waiting for help to arrive. He is a true example of how a doctor should be. However, it is highly disappointing on the hospital authority and the government's part for playing with something as crucial as someone's life.
