ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi left for Saudi Arabia Wednesday morning for a day-long visit.

Sources said the premier is accompanied by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif.

The premier will hold a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman and also pay a visit to the resting place of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in Medina.

The prime minister is also expected to hold meetings with other senior officials of the Kingdom.

This is the first foreign visit of Abbasi, who was elected prime minister on August 1 after the earlier premier, Nawaz Sharif, was disqualified from holding public office by the Supreme Court in its landmark July 28 judgment in the Panama Papers case.

Sources said today's visit to Saudi Arabia, a close ally of Pakistan, will feature discussions on US President Donald Trump's new policy regarding Pakistan.

Trump on Tuesday announced his strategy for the region in a much-anticipated speech and harshly criticised Pakistan for providing a safe-haven to "agents of chaos".
