Di Maria To Barca? Hackers Leave Football Fans In Splits After Taking Over Barcelona's Twitter Account

Barcelona is arguably one of the biggest and most prestigious football clubs on the planet. The Spanish giants have a rich history, they boast of mega stars and their trophy cabinet is big enough to make any football club feel inferior. But, despite all that, the recent days have undeniably been the toughest for the Catalans.

After losing their star striker Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a record-breaking transfer, Barcelona were left red-faced after falling short in the Spanish Super Cup against arch-rivals Real Madrid. And, if that wasn't enough, a hacker group had fun at their expense after taking control of their Twitter account in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The group 'OurMine' went on to post the news of the club announcing the signing of Angel di Maria from PSG and later urged Barcelona to contact them apparently for account recovery. The hacking group made another post where they asked the Twitter users to get #FCBHack trend on the micro-blogging website.

Our accounts have been hacked tonight.
We're working to solve the problem as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience.

After sweating it out with the hackers to reclaim their account, Barcelona eventually managed to restore the order and confirmed that their Twitter account was hacked. "Our accounts have been hacked tonight. We're working to solve the problem as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience," the Spanish club tweeted.

The hack occurred hours after Barcelona announced that they are seeking at least 8.5 million euros ($10 million) from Neymar in lieu to a breach of contract after the Brazilian's world record 222-million-euro move to French club PSG earlier this month.

'OurMine' is the same group that was responsible for leaking the episodes of HBO's popular TV Show Game Of Thrones. They have also been credited with the hack of several other high-profile accounts including the official handles of Netflix, WWE and HBO.

Here's how the Twitter users reacted to the hack of Barcelona's official handle:

Hackers are doing much better job in the transfer market than Barca board. #FCBHack
