KARACHI: Former president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari prevented the Sindh government from availing the proposed raise in the salaries of lawmakers.

The former president took notice of the increase of 300 percent in the salaries of the MPAs and provincial ministers.

Zardari directed Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah that under the ongoing financial condition, the raises would be an extra burden on the national treasury.

Provincial minister Nasir Hussain Shah said that the decision to increase the salaries will be reviewed now, following the notice taken by the PPP co-chairman.

On October 15, Murad Ali Shah had approved a summary to increase salaries and privileges of provincial lawmakers, including the CM Sindh.

According to the bill, there was an increase of around 150 percent in the salaries of cabinet members, advisers and special assistants.

The salaries of the CM, speaker and deputy speaker were to be raised by a hefty 300 percent.
