Current OnePlus Devices Won't Get Google's Project Treble
OnePlus confirmed in its forums yesterday that none of its current devices, including the 3/3T and the 5/5T, will support Project Treble, even after they're updated to Android Oreo. In an AMA on the OnePlus forums, OnePlus confirmed that the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T won't get Project Treble support.
Project Treble is making its debut in Android Oreo, and it's set to potentially be a game changer in how updates are handled. Announced back in May at Google I/O, Project Treble is a new way of handling updates on Android devices. In short, Treble is designed to make it easier for OEMs to update to newer versions of Android. It does this by splitting up portions of Android that don't need to change with updates, such as the work done with part vendors including Qualcomm.
This process replaces the existing process that involves a wait-in period for manufacturers in receiving the new software release from chip makers to modify the software specific to their hardware.
OnePlus hasn't given a reason as to why it isn't adding this technology as part of the Oreo update that it will be pushing out to its phones. Only devices that ship with Android Oreo installed out of the box will be required to feature Project Treble, and, sadly, OnePlus's most recent phone, the 5T, ships with Android Nougat.
Still, Google's first-generation Pixel phone supports Project Treble, and the Essential Phone is attempting to support the feature, even though those phones first shipped with Android Nougat. So it's clear that adding support is possible.
Many have been disappointed with the fact that the OnePlus 5T ships with Nougat out of the box. Android Oreo has been out for a couple of months now and smartphone makers like Sony and LG have already started shipping products with Oreo out of the box. It won't be surprising to see OnePlus say that the 5T will receive two major Android updates and this should include the Oreo and N - practically meaning just a year of software support.
The good news, however, is that the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T won't be left out in the cold after Android 8.0 Oreo. They (along with the OnePlus 5 and 5T, presumably) are slated to get Android 8.1 Oreo-based firmware 'later'.
