Ind Vs SL: Ishant Shines On Return As Fans Bring Back Legendary 'Sharma Ji' Jokes

In a bid to prepare for the testing tour of South Africa, the Indian cricket team has decided to roll out seam-friendly pitches springing in bounce and pace in the ongoing three-match Test series against Sri Lanka. After a draw in the first game, the second Test in Nagpur was also expected to deliver a similar wicket and the first day's play is a testimony to that.

Expecting the Nagpur track to assist seamers, India also called back old warhorse Ishant Sharma, who was the bowling spearhead for the side in his heyday. Playing his first international game since March 2017, the lanky speedster was right on the money from the word go and gave his side an early breakthrough after striking in the third over of his Test comeback.

Looking for an early swing, Ishant began his spell with pitched-up deliveries outside the off-stump. His rhythmic high-arm action, serving considerable pace, finally bore fruit in the fifth over of the innings when a full-length delivery forced an outside edge off Lankan opener Sadeera Samarawickrama who walked back into the hut after scoring just 13 runs.

Soon, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja joined the party to dismiss Lahiru Thirimanne (9) and Angelo Mathews (10) respectively as India tightened the screws on their Lankan counterparts early in the match. But, Ishant was not done yet and capitalising on the long-awaited opportunity, he struck again to dismiss free-flowing Dimuth Karunaratne (51) in the 51st over.

Plugging away at length to create an awkward angle before going across, Ishant had the Lankan opener rooted to the crease and rapped him on top of the pad to evoke an LBW decision from the umpire. At the time of writing this article, the 29-year-old had taken two crucial wickets for his side at the expense of 33 runs in his spell of 13 overs.

It was great to see him making an impact early on in his comeback. And, the Virat Kohli brigade will expect Ishant to capitalise on his great start and build on as the game progresses further.

Many had questioned Ishant's inclusion after Mohammed Shami's niggle in his left hip ruled him out of the second Test. However, the Indian speedster didn't just surprise the critics, but also won over the fans who couldn't resist in unearthing old jokes including the notorious 'Sharma Ji' jibes on Twitter.

New headlines: Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma back in the team.
Gali ki aunties: Dekho dono sharma ji k bete fir se team me aa gaye, aur humare Gambhir ko dekho, bas tweet karta rehta hai.
