PESHAWAR: A candlelight vigil was held to honour Bollywood icon Shashi Kapoor by residents of the city on Wednesday.

Shashi Kapoor passed away at the age of 79 in Mumbai on Monday.

Shashi who was the younger brother of Raj Kapoor came from a family which had migrated from Peshawar to India. The Kapoor family?s ancestral home is located in the Kissa Khwani Bazaar of the old city and was constructed by Raj and Shashi Kapoor?s grandfather in 1918.

Considered Bollywood?s first crossover actor ? Shashi Kapoor appeared in several Merchant Ivory movies. His most memorable roles were in films such as "Jab Jab Phool Khile" (Whenever The Flowers Bloom, 1965), "Kabhi Kabhie" (Sometimes, 1976), and "Kalyug" (Age of Downfall, 1981).

He was also adored for his role opposite Bachchan in the hit movie "Deewaar" (The Wall, 1975) in which he delivered one of Hindi cinema's most famous lines -- ´Mere paas maa hai´ (I have a mother).

He won numerous acting prizes and in 2011 was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, one of India´s highest civilian awards.
