According to ABC News, police sources say a possible pipe bomb detonated in a passageway below ground at the Port Authority.
New York Police confirmed that one person has been taken into custody but has not confirmed what kind of explosive device was used.
Police further confirmed that only the suspect was injured and subway trains are bypassing the Port Authority station.
Traffic has been suspended in the area and is being diverted away from the area.
US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the explosion in New York City, said the White House.
Earlier, the New York Police Department (NYPD), said it was responding to reports of an explosion of unknown origin at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.
