ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will neither field its candidate nor support those nominated by the other two biggest parties for the slot of Senate chairman.
According to sources, PTI Chief Imran Khan has refused to extend his support for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), days after reports emerged the latter is trying to woo PTI to support its candidate.
PTI might instead support a candidate from among the independent senators from Balochistan or FATA if either of them contests for the seat, sources said.
As a last option, the party might also support PPP if it aims to re-elect outgoing Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani.
Imran considers PPP the party which introduced horse-trading in Senate elections and is also unhappy over PTI MPAs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ?selling? their votes to PPP, sources said.
Senate chairman to be from PPP: Aitzaz Ahsan
PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan claimed today that the chairman of the Upper House will be unanimously elected and will belong to the PPP.
PTI will also support the decision, Ahsan said.
Separately, PPP leader Abdul Qayyum Soomro said party co-chairman Asif Zardari will also approach Jamiat Ulema Islam-F chief Fazlur Rehman for his support.
Independent senators from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) will also formally announce their support after meeting with Zardari, Soomro said.
PPP on Tuesday had claimed to have the support of eight FATA senators for the coveted slot of chairman and deputy chairman of the Upper House of Parliament.
The development came on Tuesday following a meeting between PPP leaders Dr Qayyum Soomro and Senator Saleem Mandviwala and the independent FATA senators.
