S Jaishankar, The Shrewd Ex-Foreign Secretary Who Steered India's Doklam Policy, Now Works At Tata
Ex-foreign secretary of India, Subramanyam Jaishankar, was recently appointed by the TATA group as the president for its global corporate affairs. The ex-Indian diplomat retired as the foreign secretary in January 2018. Although there's a cooling off period of at least one year for most high profile diplomats, S Jaishankar was given a reprieve by the government.

In his diplomatic career, Jaishankar served as India's ambassador to some of the most important geographies including the US, China and Singapore. Jaishankar is a 1977 batch Indian Foreign Service officer who started his career at the Moscow embassy in 1979. A graduate of St Stephens College and JNU, Jaishankar had extensive diplomatic experience in south-eastern territories as well along with Eastern Europe and Japan, considered TATA groups key potential markets.
“In his new role he will be responsible for the Tata group's global corporate affairs and international strategy development,” Tata Sons, the group's holding company, said in a statement. “Dr Jaishankar will work with Tata companies to help them strengthen their business presence and positioning in their respective geographies globally.”

While Jaishankar is fresh off the heals from his stint as the top Indian diplomat in the foreign ministry, his appointment will definitely help Tata sons to make key breakthroughs in markets that are proving to be a little too difficult in this ominous business environment. Moreover, how difficult can this stint really be for a man of the stature of Jaishankar whose critical handling of the Doklam standoff resulted in China retracing its steps back into its original territory?

Jaishankar's experience and skill at the highest level of government will definitely help Tata achieve a better footprint in the US and China. He is also known as a good negotiator, having negotiated the civil nuclear deal with the US on India's part. With a man of such prominence in the international community, a resource like Jaishankar is a steal for a conglomerate like Tata.
