Arjun Tendulkar's Selection In The India U-19 Team Has Sparked A Debate On Nepotism Vs Talent

Sachin Tendulkar might be the 'God of cricket' but he is also a hardworking and a doting father at the end of the day. He had to work his way up in the challenging world of cricket without any strings, and that's exactly how he has trained his son, Arjun.

Arjun Tendulkar's cricket career so far has been both scrutinised and praised from various angles by a lot of people. After the news of Arjun making it to the Under-19 Indian cricket squad for the Sri Lanka tour was announced, it sparked a major debate on the internet.

While a lot of people are praising Arjun for making it to the team through sheer hard work, there are some who are calling it a classic case of nepotism.

Seriously why so much negativity around his selection ? If he doesn't deserve to be there , he will get dropped just like other players ( son of)  famous cricketers.#ArjunTendulkar pic.twitter.com/9fP2SKGPtV

If anybody thinks #arjuntendulkar got into the India u-19 team through merit. You are far far away from reality.

#ArjunTendulkar Nepotism Zindabaad!

Every time #ArjunTendulkar gets hit for a boundary, he can turn to the batman and say, "pata hai mera baap kaun hain?" @sachin_rt

Someone even compared him to Rohan Gavaskar.

#ArjunTendulkar is an average bowler. He runs, and delivers the ball with a weird action. Thanks to his father's recommendations, he is now part of the U-19 squad- and hundreds of more talented bowlers get ignored.

Remember, there was someone called Rohan Gavaskar.

And then there was some obvious comparison to the nepotism prevalent in Bollywood.

It's upto #ArjunTendulkar to break the trend of Bollywood sons who could not do even half as good as their dad. ð#bachchan #kapoor #khanna

To be fair, it doesn't matter if nepotism existed here or not, all that matters right now is how he performs for India during the game.

While it is also quite possible that this opportunity might have come Arjun's way in an easier manner, compared to that of an average struggling player, one can also hold the committee accountable if his performance is not justified with the selection.

That would probably be the right time to question them. Until then, we can take a breather and see how it Tendulkar Jr. fares.
