The court, while delivering the verdict, furthered that Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was being used to harass the members of the LGBTQ community and that they are liable to the same fundamental rights as other citizens. For those who aren't aware about it, Section 377 criminalised same *** relationship deeming it "against the order of nature", a law that dates back to the British colonial rule.

At the stroke of the mid-day hour, as the conscience of many slept, India's LGBTQ awoke to light & freedom. This moment came 71 years too late history, 71 yrs after our brethren attained freedom; but the soul of a community, long suppressed, has found utterance. Congratulations!

India's Supreme Court struck down a 157-year-old colonial-era law, “Section 377,” that criminalized all sexual activity apart from heterosexual *** as “against the order of nature” on Thursday. The judges delivered a unanimous verdict, describing Section 377 as “arbitrary” and said that freedom could only be fulfilled where the LGBT community possesses equal rights. The ruling also included a requirement for police “sensitization” to prevent discrimination against LGBT individuals ð®ð³ð (ð·: Getty, Reuters, AP) - #section377 #lgbt #lgbtq #lesbian #gay #bisexual #transgender #queer #lovewins #loveislove #gaysex #pride #equality #indianpride #newdelhi #india #indian

Although this is a remarkable step towards the right direction, it cannot be ruled out that we still have a long way to go before that time comes when every citizen feels safe, empowered and lives without any fear.
