Deepika Padukone To Turn Producer For Her Next Film, Where She Plays An Acid Attack Survivor

The remarkable success of movies like 'Raazi', 'Gold' and 'Sanju', has had Bollywood riding on the wave of biopics and movies based on real life events. Films like 'Uri', 'Manikarnika' and 'Kesari' have only underlined the recent success of this trend further.

The latest addition to this list is director Meghna Gulzar's upcoming venture on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, featuring superstar Deepika Padukone. After giving us a heart-warming watch in 'Raazi', Gulzar is now set to make a biopic on acid attack survivor and activist, Laxmi, who was attacked at the age of 15, and has since been working for the welfare of acid attack survivors.

Reportedly, Deepika Padukone will not only play the lead role, but will also wear the slip into the producer's shoes for the movie. Deepika told Mumbai Mirror, "When I heard this story, I was deeply moved as it's not just one of violence but of strength and courage, hope and victory. It made such an impact on me, that personally and creatively, I needed to go beyond and so the decision to turn producer."

Gulzar, who's also made films like 'Talwar,'' said "Using Laxmi's story as a lens, we are attempting to explore these aspects and the consequences of acid-related violence in our society. This is what makes this must-told story relevant. Awareness is the first step towards change."

On casting the 'Padmavat' actress, she said "I was instinctively convinced that Deepika would do justice to the character and the story. Also, her physicality matched with what I'd imagined for Laxmi's character. I'm grateful and encouraged that she was so spontaneous in her decision to do the film."

Laxmi was recently in news for her financial struggles in the recent past. Upon learning of her misfortunes, Akshay Kumar even transferred Rs 5 lakh into her account so that she can find her feet.

Laxmi's story is one of the most inspiring accounts of courage and bravery. We look forward to Deepika doing justice to it on the big screen.
