2018 has been a great year for movies. A lot of old, forgotten movies came back with their much-awaited sequels, while we got new material as well.

The year started off with a bang; we got 'Black Panther' in January which cemented Chadwick Boseman's career in Hollywood, and 'Avengers: Infinity War' whose climax knocked the wind out of us.

Adored mercenary Deadpool was back with his quintessential sarcasm and brand of humour in 'Deadpool 2'.

'Incredibles 2' finally graced movie screens after 14 long years, and we were reacquainted with our favourite superhero family, the Parrs, which went on to become the second-highest grossing movie of all time.

'A Quiet Place' served up all the horror in a flick which was rightfully scary, marking Emily Blunt and John Krasinski's first joint endeavour.

Tom Cruise was back as Ethan Hunt with 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout', the sixth instalment of the series, along with Henry Cavill.

The Ocean's franchise got a spin-off with an all-female ensemble cast, 'Ocean's Eight', starring Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, among others.

2018 could very well be dubbed as 'The Year of Sequels'.

So, what does the latter part of this year and early 2019 have in store for us?

Here are seven highly anticipated movies that we are excited about and can't wait for:

1. Mary, Queen of Scots:

Mary, Queen of Scots© Universal Pictures

One of the most anticipated movies of 2018, the historical drama focuses on the throne of England, and the contenders for it; reigning Queen Elizabeth I and her cousin Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots.

Tempers and emotions flare when Mary returns from France to Scotland, to take claim of her rightful throne which Elizabeth is ruling on, resulting in an outright war, alias the Rising of the North (1569).

Based on the biography by John Guy, 'My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots', Saoirse Ronan as Mary and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I will have a royal clash in this period drama, following their intertwined lives and their struggle to rule over England, all the while fighting to keep up with their personal lives.

The intriguing part of the movie is that it shows a meeting between the two legends, which never happened (they only corresponded via letters).

Did they ever share a friendly bond? Is the meeting just a hallucination? How would history have changed had they really met?

Well, we need to watch it to find out.

The movie promises stellar acting; given two Oscar-nominated, phenomenal actresses and a fabulous take on history. Saoirse Ronan, known for her acting chops and impeccable hold on accents, has already nailed the Scottish accent (although, shouldn't it be French, seeing that she was Dauphine of France? :D) and the beautiful Margot Robbie looks spectacularly formidable as the Virgin Queen.

Date of Release: December 7, 2018

2. Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns© Walt Disney Pictures

The wind has finally changed direction and Mary Poppins is back in the Banks household, complete with her satchel bag and parrot-head umbrella. Set 25 years after the original plot, the now grown-up Banks children, Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael (Ben Whishaw), are visited by their former nanny when Michael's wife dies. And this time she isn't alone. Her idiosyncratic cousin Topsy (Meryl Streep) and street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) accompany Mary and Michael's kids on new, fun adventures.

54 years after the original 'Mary Poppins', this movie will serve as a sequel to it and is based on the remaining seven books of the series.

Emily Blunt reprises Julie Andrews' Oscar-winning role of Mary Poppins.

We can't wait to see how the talented Emily portrays the prim and proper Mary, and if the trailers are to be believed, she has already struck the right chord and is ready to serve a “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” spoonful of sugar to the audiences.

Dick Van Dyke returns in a cameo as Mr. Dawes Jr., making him the only person from the original movie to return for the sequel.

If you are a Disney movie aficionado like me, this is one movie to look out for (:P).

Date of Release: December 19, 2018

3. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald© Warner Bros. Pictures

Guess what? Newt Scamander and his team are back with another fantasy and adventure filled instalment. The sequel to 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' promises another insight into the magical world of Harry Potter.

More importantly, we go back to Hogwarts!

A young Albus Dumbledore, played by the ever-charming Jude Law, and notorious Gellert Grindelwald, played by the chameleon-in-disguise Johnny Depp will feature alongside Newt, as the magical world gears up to challenge one of the greatest villains of the realm.

New characters and the characters fleetingly mentioned in the books, will come to the fore in the movie. New plotlines, further prescience into the lives of beloved characters and we can finally go back to Hogwarts. An interesting thing to watch out for is the Obscurus and the new beasts added to Newt's already bulging briefcase.

What exactly was the reason that changed the relationship between Albus and Gellert? What did Leta Lestrange do to Newt? Why does Dumbledore teach DADA instead of Transfiguration? All the answers are just a few months away.

The trailers look fabulous with the animations and VFX; Eddie Redmayne's eccentric Newt and Dan Fogler's adorable Jacob Kowalski are set to light up the screen with their bromance.

Don't forget the sultry Queenie (Alison Sudol) who will add the required levity and charm, and the proper Tina (Katherine Waterston), whose practical knowledge will save the day.

One thing is sure to happen: Magic!

Date of Release: November 16, 2018

4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood:

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood© Columbia Pictures

Loosely based around the 1969 Charles Manson murder and the emergence of “New Hollywood”, this movie will focus on a Hollywood struggling artist and former TV star, Rick Dalton, played by everyone's favorite, the dashing Leonardo Di Caprio, and his stunt double and best friend (in the movie) Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt.

The movie will possibly delve into the Manson murders as we have Margot Robbie (yet again, not that I'm complaining :P) as Sharon Tate, the glamorous actress married to Roman Polanski, who was murdered by the Manson followers. Al Pacino plays a Hollywood agent to Leonardo's character.

A grand project with a script cooking up for more than five years, which has been kept under a veil of secrecy, this crime mystery directed by Quentin Tarantino is sure to be a masterclass in thrill and is bound to have a spectacular screenplay; perhaps an Oscar?

Let's just see what the movie gives us.

Date of Release: July 26, 2019

5. Ralph Breaks the Internet:

Ralph Breaks the Internet© Walt Disney Pictures

Seems like Ralph hadn't wrecked it completely and is back to break the internet now!

Joined with his friend Vanellope von Schweetz, he embarks on a quest to find a replacement steering wheel for “Sugar Rush”, as the previous one has broken, prompting Mr. Litwak to unplug the machine. The two travel via the Internet where they meet various wondrous characters; sassy algorithms, the Disney Princesses, characters from the Marvel Comics, The Muppets, The Star Wars franchise, etc. so that they can restore “Sugar Rush” and rehabilitate its inhabitants.

In order to earn the money to buy the steering wheel, they need to play a slasher, road-rash racing game, 'Slaughter Race', where they find Shank, a racer in the game with whom Vanellope hits it off instantly and starts looking up to her, and now prefers to be in Slaughter Race instead of Sugar Rush, eventually making Ralph sad.

Will Vanellope come back to Sugar Rush? Will Sugar Rush be saved again? What does Shank really want?

Yet another Disney serving, complete with cool 3-D animations and new characters and the adorable Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman), this movie should feature on your must-watch list!

Cameos from other sister franchises and nostalgia with video game characters like 'Sonic', is sure to make this the ultimate animated movie to watch for 2018.

As a bonus, we also have our own Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) voicing Shank! Another reason to watch it!

Date of Release: November 21, 2018

6. Bohemian Rhapsody:

Bohemian Rhapsody© 20th Century Fox

Chronicling the life and times of British rock band Queen's lead vocalist Freddie Mercury, the movie will shed light on the prolific career of the rockstar, and the relationship he shared with the other members of the band. It will also emphasize upon the rise of the band, Mercury's solo singing career and the band's performance at the famous Live Aid Concert (1985).

It will also chart Mercury's life; his struggles to keep up with fame, his relationships, his trysts with drug abuse and the complications after being diagnosed with HIV.

Rami Malek looks like a dead ringer for Freddie Mercury in the trailer, with his trademark moustache, vest and flamboyance. Let's hope the 'Mr. Robot' star does justice to the role of one of the greatest musicians of all time.

For a music lover, this movie is sure to touch your heart and make you go back and listen to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' yet again.

Date of Release: October 24, 2018

So, which one are you waiting for?
