Google unveiled the new Pixel 3 and 3 XL this week and the phones intend to make Android smarter. While we see so many smartphones launching every month, the Pixel 3 series stands apart by focusing only on software. Sure, the hardware is top-notch, but that is something Google has completely sidelined in its marketing efforts, as it's all about the usability.
It's normal to see smartphone makers throw heavy technical terms to define their product, Google, on the other hand, cares about the end experience.
And to make it the best, the company has incorporated tonnes of new features that may look like a gimmick at first, but will come in extremely handy in the longer run. Here are a few of them:1. Google Assistant Managing Your Calls:
Earlier this year, Google showed a demo of Duplex, an AI conducting a natural sounding conversation and booking a restaurant reservation for you. This functionality is now rolling out with the Pixel 3 on a city-by-city basis, starting with New York City. For older Pixel owners, that future will arrive before the end of the year.
Yes, we are slowly walking into the future, we don't even have to use the phone to make calls ourselves anymore. The virtual assistant can take your preferences and do all the work for you.2. Call Screen Answering:
Instead of talking on your behalf, this feature answers your incoming phone calls for you and transcribes what the person on the other end of the phone is saying. When users receive an anonymous/unknown incoming call, they will have the option to tap the “Screen call” button to have Google Assistant pick up on their behalf.
The AI will note how the caller is currently talking to a “screening service from Google” and take the callers details for you. After the transcript is generated, it will suggest you a reply; 'Who's this?', 'Call you back in some time', or mark as spam.3. The Smartest Rear Camera:

While all smartphone makers are busy putting as many lenses as possible on their phones, Google is still sticking to a single lens setup on the Pixel 3. All the heavy lifting is done by the onboard AI, and the phone is able to churn out amazing portrait shots with that coveted bokeh background blur.
Even though it has a 12-megapixel hardware sensor, Google is able to run a Super Res Zoom mode that stitches together multiple shots to boost the resolution when you zoom in. In low-light settings, Night Sight will re-colour photos and brighten them without the need for a flash.4. The Coolest Front Camera:
While the rear has a single lens camera setup, the front boasts a dual camera setup that can capture wide angle pictures. With this, you'll never have to carry along a selfie stick, no matter how big the group or landscape is, it'll fit in perfectly. Adding to this, the AI can now detect fun moments like a wink or tongue, and automatically takes a picture.
It can also recognize your friends and family from the pictures and create Live Albums that automatically fill with photos of the people you are close to. Any picture you take with someone will automatically get sorted in the respective album.5. Flip To Mute:
In continuation of Google's Wellbeing program that aims to reduce the time you spend on your phone, the Pixel 3 comes with a Flip to Mute mode that essentially mutes sounds and notifications automatically. If the setting is on, and you put your phone face down on a table, the mode kicks in.6. Google Lens:
Google Lens is coming to the Pixel 3 camera and that means you'll be able to point your phone's camera at something -a food menu, a movie poster, or a foreign language and it will automatically fetch the restaurant details, the actor details or translate the language.
So phone numbers can be clicked on to dial, products can come up in Google Shopping to buy and landmarks can be given search results.
