There is nothing better than seeing a movie that tells the story of an underdog who, for his kind and in a way 'pushover' personality, is troubled by antagonists in the form of a goon, office colleague, or at times even someone close to him. Well, there are a number of such movies where we have seen the hero being a 'loser' by failing to deal with the problems at the start, only to completely transform himself into a person who can hold his own.
Β© Facebook
Here are some of the most memorable Bollywood charactersΒ which will make you go, "Arre maine socha yeh toh fuljhadi thi, par yeh toh rocket nikla!"
1. Karthik In Karthik Calling Karthik Β© Netflix
Karthik played by Farhan AkhtarΒ was portrayed as an absolute nobody in the movie because of his under-confident personality, inability to woo women, and the fact that he was pushed around so much by his boss.
However, through the course of the movie, we suddenly see him completely change himself into someone who would get the hottest girl, get the promotion as well as give an 'ulta thappad' to anyone who tried looking down on him.
2. Surinder/Raj In Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Β© YouTube
Surinder (Shah Rukh Khan) in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was a complete victim of falling in love with his wife Tani (Anushka Sharma) who had no interest in him, because, arrange marriage. Instead of looking for good things in him, Tani would question why Surinder was not one of those macho-type dudes who would be super confident, dance well, and look stylish. (How materialistic!)
Well, this is till Surinder transforms himself into Raj, a dashing, dancing version of himself that even Tani could not recognize. Yeah, that was a little ridiculous, but it was Bollywood through and through. And well, guess what! We saw quite a wild side to Surinder.
3. Vidrohi In Bareilly Ki Barfi Β© Netflix
We all could not imagine Rajkumar Rao's character Vidrohi to actually be someone who could call the shots, just because of how immensely polite and underconfident he seemed like a person.Β
Well, wait till that iconic jeep-stopping scene from the movie. Vidrohi just used his hands to stop a bunch of goons, and that scene pretty much set the pace of the movie from then on.Β
4. Janardan/Jordan In RockstarΒ Β© Prime Video
Janardan is sweet, shy and a struggling musician who has trouble finding his true calling. However, when he turned into the Rock-Sufi angry god of a musician in the movie, we could just not imagine that it was the same guy.
Credit goes to Ranbir Kapoor,Β who used his immense acting talent to play two different characters in the movie to perfection.
5. Sanju In Joh Jeeta Wohi Sikandar Β© Zee5
Sanju (Aamir Khan), while not being a pushover in the movie, was certainly considered a loser in his very own family, with his father thinking that he really was a good-for-nothing boy who just chased girls and faffed around with his friends.
However, a grievous injury to his older brother caused by Deepak Tijori's character Shekhar completely transforms him into an athlete that will stop at nothing to make his brother and father proud by competing to win an inter-collegiate bicycle race.
The race is a nail-biter while his physical and mental transformation is spectacular in the movie.

Just the other day, while mindlessly switching through channels on my TV, I came across a film that in all honesty didnβt just leave me with a bad aftertasteΒ but also a cringed expression on my face that I could not shake off for days.
Β© Rajshri Productions
I am talking about the 2006 release Vivah starring Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao and Alok Nath in the lead.Β
Before we start, let me get one thing out of the way, even though the film is titled Vivah (marriage), what the film really is about is colourism, superficiality and the importance of staying hydrated. #JalLijiye
Β© Rajshri Productions
The movie starts with an introduction to a middle-class family living in the streets of a small town named Madhupur.Β
Poonam (Amrita Rao) is a young college going girl who lives with her uncle Krishnakant (Alok Nath) ever since her parents died.Β
And while Krishnakant, the younger brother of Poonamβs deceased father, loves her like her own, his wife Rama (Seema Biswas) canβt stand the sight of Poonam.
Β© Rajshri Productions
Why, you wonder? Because Poonam is visibly fair and lovely while Ramaβs own daughter Rajni (Amrita Prakash) is dusky - cue colourism.Β
Not like there was enough discrimination based on colour in our country where a saavli ladki was not being preferred, that Sooraj Barjatya thought of feeding a little more into the stereotype by making a film about just that.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
And if that was not enough, the film is laced with Rama trying to paint her daughterβs face with white powder, making a mockery out of all the brown-skinned women in the world.
Β© Rajshri Productions
As the movie progresses, the dynamic of this family living in Madhupur becomes quite clear - a seesaw between Rama who is the resentful, villainous aunt and Krishnakant who possibly could win an Oscar for being the most devoted father and patient husband.Β Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
One fine day, Krishnakantβs friend Bhagat gets impressed by the poised and calm demeanour of Poonam and decides to play cupid.Β
Taking the proposal of marriage of a middle-class girl to a house that is shown to be super rich, the film maintains its essence of bullshitting people.
Β© Rajshri Productions
The proposal is kept in front of Prem (Shahid Kapoor) who first tries to sound important and pricey by denying it, only to go back on his word at lightning speed after he sees Poonamβs photograph.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
The two families decide to meet and see if itβs a viable match and as soon as Poonam offers Prem water, the deal is sealed. After all, what else do you need to know about a woman to marry her, apart from the fact that she can offer you jal?
Β© Rajshri Productions
Krishnakant then invites Prem and his entire family to come to spend a little time with them at their summer place in Som Sarovar. How a middle-class family with a visible financial crunch can afford to have a summer place, is as beyond us as Amrita Raoβs wardrobe in the movie.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
As the two families meet again, get settled in and Prem is offered enough water to stay hydrated for the rest of his life, we are shown how the two start getting closer.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
Prem being the fancy entitled kind makes subtle advances at Poonam and even sings a song whose lyrics are the antithesis of consent. #MujheHaqHai #KaunBola
The trip finally comes to an end and both Poonam and Prem start staying in touch via letters. Somehow, the man-child that he is, who simply starts and ends his days by thinking about Poonam, advances in his career and cracks a big deal in Japan.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
The two meet again at his success party and flirt in a decibel as low as the IQ that went behind in scripting this done-to-death film plot.Β
Till this point, things are going suspiciously well and knowing Sooraj Barjatya and his genre of films, you know that a tragedy is just lurking in the corner.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
Rama, who has been playing along all this while, but is burning up from inside, stirs drama in the family by suggesting how her husband doesnβt give two shits about her real daughter and is busy spending the family fortune on Poonamβs wedding.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
In the meantime, shit hits the fan when a firecracker lands up in Poonamβs bedroom and eventually lights the entire house on fire. After staying blissfully unaware in a room with fumes higher than the ratings of this movie, Poonam finally realises she is in deep shit and somehow escapes.
Β© Rajshri Productions
However, her younger sister Rajni is still stuck, and thatβs when Poonamβs hero complex kicks in and she rushes to save Rajni.Β
Of course, while doing so, a burning mantel falls on her and weβre straightway taken to the hospital.
Β© Rajshri Productions
The accident has led to Poonam experiencing some severe third-degree burns, but somehow her face is completely unharmed.Β
And maybe that is what becomes the saving grace for her, since the doctor also doesnβt miss a chance to mention how Indian families disown their daughter in such cases. Just, wow.
Β© Rajshri Productions
Prem comes to visit Poonam and reassures her that he is not going to back out from marrying her. And just like that BollywoodΒ makes a god out of Shahid Kapoorβs character for doing the only decent thing such as committing to his word and going through with the wedding.Β
But because in our Indian culture, the common thing to do is leave the woman hanging for dead, his role was obviously glorified way beyond proportion.Β
Β© Rajshri Productions
Meanwhile, Rama realises the kind of bitch she had been all this while and finally accepts Poonam giving her the validation she wanted since she was a child.
Β© Rajshri Productions
Surgery goes well, Poonam and Prem get married and the two get to have their romantic wedding night the way they wouldβve wanted to, with Prem yet again singing βMujhe haq haiβ, resonating with every Indian entitled husband.Β
The End

Protein is perhaps the most important macronutrientΒ when it comes to bodybuilding and overall fitness. Protein sources are one of the most debated areas in fitness, and for good reason. It is widely believedΒ that it is harder for vegetarians to build muscle because of lack of protein sources, but thanks to super fit celebs like John Abraham and Shahid Kapoor, that myth has been busted.

With proper knowledge and judicious usage of all the ingredients, it is not difficult for vegetarians to fulfill their daily protein requirement. There is an array of vegetarian protein sources which do the job, but there is one particular source that does it better than everything else.
via GIPHY
We are talking about, wait for it, soya. Soya, we reiterate, is the best vegetarian protein source from a nutrition as well as cost per gram perspective. While we have dairy and lentils etc, they don't exactly cut it when you have strict diet and budgetary constraints because dairy has a lot of fat, and lentils are mostly carbs, plus dairy can get expensive. Soya is not bound by such constraints.
Β© iStock
100 gm of soya chunks contain 52 gm of protein, which is more than half the volume. Anyone who has been working out or dieting to build muscle will know the struggles of deciding what to eat, keeping protein content in mind. While one full egg has around 6 gm of protein, 100 ml of milk has 3.3 gm, and 100 gm of paneer has 18 gm of protein. Keeping this in mind, soya easily ends up being the cheapest and most easily available source of protein for vegetarians (and non vegetarians too, because the protein content in soya is higher than all kinds of meat).
Β© iStock
Also, from a nutrition point of view, soya is a 'complete' protein as its profile contains all the amino acids required. Now, let's get to the hate it receives.
via GIPHY
Most of the hate soya receives is because of the myths and misunderstandings associated with it. The biggest myth is 'soya leads to feminizing effects' in men by increasing estrogen and lowering testosterone. Yes, we reiterate, while there is a reason behind this claim, asserting this in black and white without understanding the research is a fallacy.
via GIPHY
The reason for that concern is the presence of Isoflavones in Soya. Isoflavones contain phytoestrogen that act as estrogen in mammals, and research on rats have shown that it has impacted their hormone levels. However, let us see what study in humans has shown. Clinical studies with men consuming upto 150 gms of Isoflavones in a day have proven to be absolutely harmless. Let's look at some numbers now. 100 gm soya contains about 10 gm Isoflavones. So to exceed 150 gm, one has to eat more than 1.5 kg of soya in a day, which is almost impossible.Β
via GIPHY
In other words, consuming soya is absolutely safe for men, and it does NOT lower testosterone or increase Estrogen under normal circumstances. To sum it up, Soya is a boon for vegetarians, and deserves the top spot as the best vegetarian protein source.
