The out-of-control Chinese rocket that was tumbling to earth finally crashed landed in the Indian Ocean today.Β Β
Most of its components were destroyed upon re-entry into this atmosphere, however, it was still a very irresponsible mission by China’s space agency.Β

Debris from Long March 5B now lies west of the Maldives archipelago, according to the coordinates of the point of impact.Β

Space-Track, space monitory agency also confirmed that the rocket has indeed crash-landed. "Everyone else following the #LongMarch5B re-entry can relax. The rocket is down. You can see all relevant information and updates here on Twitter/Facebook, so there is no need to keep visiting the space-track dot org website," posted Space-Track on Twitter.

The odds of the rocket hitting populated areas was quite low as most of Earth’s surface is covered by water. However, due to the uncertainty of the rocket’s orbital decay and China’s failure to issue stronger reassurances, some researchers called the mission highly irresponsible.

The Long March 5B rocket weighs about 21 metric tons and is 100 feet long which would make it one of the largest objects to ever reenter the Earth’s atmosphere.Β
NASA Administrator Sen. Bill Nelson released the following statement Saturday regarding debris from the Chinese Long March 5B rocket:
β€œSpacefaring nations must minimize the risks to people and property on Earth of re-entries of space objects and maximize transparency regarding those operations.
β€œIt is clear that China is failing to meet responsible standards regarding their space debris.
β€œIt is critical that China and all spacefaring nations and commercial entities act responsibly and transparently in space to ensure the safety, stability, security, and long-term sustainability of outer space activities.”
A controlled re-entry would require the rocket to fire thrusters in the opposite direction of travel which would, in turn, slow down the object.Β
It would be enough to have the rocket follow a predetermined trajectory and land in a remote area or ocean. This reduces the chances of debris impacting populated areas.Β
It’s clear, Chinese officials did not make necessary preparations for a controlled reentry of the Long March 5B rocket.Β

NASA has shared a video that not only contains the video of the Ingenuity drone flying above Mars but is also contains audio.Β

This will be the first time everyone will be able to hear the sounds of the zipping drone through the martian air. In fact, it is the first time a spacecraft on another planet has recorded sounds from another spacecraft.Β

The Perseverance rover which carried the drone to Mars was also nearby and managed to capture video of each of the helicopter’s four flights.Β

But for the fourth flight, the microphone on the Perseverance rover was on and it captured the ghostly hum from 262 feet away.Β

If you want to hear it for yourself you will have to turn up the volume to hear it clearly. The most dominant sounds in the video are the rumble of the wind which is blowing across the open plain.Β

You can hear the helicopter if you pay close attention. The loudest sound of the Ingenuity can be heard when it flies across the camera’s field of view.Β

"This is a very good surprise," David Mimoun, the science lead for the Perseverance rover's microphone, said in a press release. "We had carried out tests and simulations that told us the microphone would barely pick up the sounds of the helicopter, as the Mars atmosphere damps the sound propagation strongly. We have been lucky to register the helicopter at such a distance. This recording will be a gold mine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere.”

In order for the sound to be heard, scientists had to isolate the sound of the rotor blades by reducing the volume of frequencies above and below the noise of the drone.Β

The Ingenuity's rotor blades spin at 2,500 rotations per minute in order to take flight in the thin Martian air. That is five times the speed of a passenger helicopter on earth.Β
Ingenuity flew 16 feet off the ground and flew south for about 436 feet. The drone captured images of the Martian surface along the way. The drone then stopped, hovered and flew back to its landing area. The drone reached a speed of 3.5 meters per second, a new record for the Ingenuity.Β
Both the Perseverance and Ingenuity are making history as both spacecraft are responsible for many firsts.Β
In addition to capturing sound from another spacecraft nearby, the Ingenuity is also the first drone to make a controlled flight on another planet.Β Β
