    LONDON: Long-serving Chelsea captain John Terry signed a one-year contract with second tier English side Aston Villa on Monday.
    Terry, 36, who left Premier League champions Chelsea after 22 trophy-laden years at the end of last season having lifted the Premier League title, is reported to have agreed a weekly salary of £60,000 (68,300 Euros, $77,700) with the club that is owned by Chinese businessman Tony Xia.
    "#WelcomeJT: It's official - John Terry signs," tweeted Aston Villa with a photograph of the former England skipper in their kit.
    Villa manager Steve Bruce hailed the arrival of Terry.
    "It has to be the biggest signing of my career," said Bruce. "It's not often you get a player of John's caliber to play for you.
    "A lot of the younger players will look up to him and it can only be a good thing for the dressing room."
    Terry said he preferred to drop down a league than have to face Chelsea.
    "It was that mental side of playing against Chelsea that would be too much to get over," said Terry, who had offers from Premier League sides West Brom and Swansea.
    "I had 22 unbelievable years at the football club. This is a new chapter. I wish Chelsea well but my thoughts are 100 percent here and the ambition to get back in the Premier League."
    "Wishing John Terry the very best of luck at Aston Villa!," champions Chelsea tweeted.
    Terry, who joined on a free transfer, is expected to fly out to Portugal to join his team-mates at the clubâ?s pre-season training, before the new season, which begins at home to Hull City, Bruceâ?s former club, on August 5.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Zafar Ali Shah filed a petition to the Supreme Court on Monday, requesting that CIA operative Raymond Davis should be handed over to Pakistan.

    The PML-N leader presented the stance in his petition that those who were mentioned in the book by Davis (?The Contractor?) should be identified and interrogated.
    He stated that Asif Zardari, Yousuf Raza Gillani, Ashfaq Pervez Kiani, and Shujah Pasha should be declared unfit for holding a government office. There should be a case against them under Article Six and their names should be placed on the Exit Control List, he further stated.
    The applicant requested that all the police record of the Ramond Davis case should be gathered and his bail orders from the ATC should be declared null and void.
    Zafar Ali Shah said that the US administration should be requested to hand over Davis and then a trial should take place against him under relevant laws of Pakistan.

    Raymond Davis ? the CIA operative who sparked a diplomatic row after gunning down two men on the streets of Lahore in January 2011 ? has penned his side of the story for the first time in a memoir titled 'The Contractor: How I Landed in a Pakistani Prison and Ignited a Diplomatic Crisis'.
    According to Davis, John Kerry, Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari, former ISI chief Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha and Husain Haqqani helped in his release from the Kot Lakhpat Jail.

    PARIS: A 23-year-old man has been charged with plotting to assassinate President Emmanuel Macron at France´s Bastille Day parade, a judicial source said Monday.
    The self-described nationalist, who was arrested last Wednesday, told investigators he wanted to kill Macron at the July 14 national day parade in Paris, a source close to the investigation said.
    He said he also wanted to attack "Muslims, Jews, blacks," the source added.
    Police arrested the man at his home in the north-west Paris suburb of Argenteuil on Wednesday after being alerted by users of a chat-room linked to a video game where he allegedly said he wanted to buy a firearm.
    Three kitchen knives were found in his vehicle and analysis of his computer found that he had conducted internet searches on potential targets, the source said.
    He was charged on Saturday with plotting to commit a terrorist act, the judicial source said.
    The man was convicted for condoning terrorism in 2016 and sentenced to three years in prison, of which 18 months were suspended.
    He had applauded neo-Nazi mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a bomb and gun rampage in 2011 in Norway.
    The top date in France´s ceremonial calendar, the July 14 parade commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 -- the start of the French Revolution and a turning point in world history.
    The parade takes place on Paris´s Champs-Elysees, which has been the site of two recent attacks targeting police.
    Late last month a man drove a car laden with weapons and gas canisters into a police van on the world-famous avenue.
    In April, a known extremist shot dead a policeman on the Champs-Elysees just days before the first round of the presidential election.
    Last July 14 saw the extremist truck-ramming in southern Nice that left 86 people dead.
    On Bastille Day in 2002, then President Jacques Chirac was the target of an assassination attempt on the avenue.
    France has been under a state of emergency that has been repeatedly renewed since extremist attacks in Paris in November 2015 in which 130 people were killed.

    DOHA: Qatar on Monday responded to a list of demands from Saudi Arabia and its allies after they agreed to give a defiant Doha another 48 hours to address their grievances.
    Details of the response were not immediately available, but a Gulf official told AFP that Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani had delivered it during a short visit to Kuwait, which is acting as a mediator in the crisis.
    Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt had announced in the early hours of Monday they were pushing back a deadline for Qatar to agree to a list of 13 demands they issued on June 22.
    A joint statement said they were extending the ultimatum, which had been due to expire at the end of the day on Sunday, at the request of Kuwait's emir.
    The demands included Doha ending support for the Muslim Brotherhood, closing broadcaster Al-Jazeera, downgrading diplomatic ties with Iran and shutting down a Turkish military base in the emirate.
    Sheikh Mohammed had earlier said the list of demands was "made to be rejected" and on Monday British lawyers for Qatar denounced the demands as "an affront to international law".
    "They are reminiscent of the extreme and punitive conduct of 'bully' states that have historically resulted in war," the lawyers said in a statement.
    Saudi Arabia and its allies announced on June 5 they were severing ties with their Gulf neighbor, sparking the worst diplomatic crisis to hit the region in decades.
    They accused Qatar of supporting extremism and of being too close to Saudi Arabia's regional arch-rival Iran, which Doha has strongly denied.
    The crisis has raised concerns of growing instability in the region, home to some of the world's largest energy exporters and several key Western allies who host US military bases.
    German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, who on Monday starts a tour of several Gulf states, called for "serious dialogue" to end the crisis.
    "We are worried that the distrust and the disunity could weaken all the parties concerned as well as the entire peninsula," said Gabriel, who will visit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
    Trump calls leaders
    Riyadh and its supporters have already severed air, sea and ground links with Qatar, cutting off vital routes for imports including food.
    They also ordered Qatari citizens to leave their territories and took various steps against Qatari firms and financial institutions.
    It is unclear what further measures will be taken if Qatar fails to meet the demands, but the UAE's ambassador to Russia Omar Ghobash warned last week that further sanctions could be imposed.
    As well as taking steps to expel Qatar from the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council, Riyadh and its allies could tell their economic partners to choose between business with them or with Doha, he told Britain's Guardian newspaper.
    Qatar has long pursued a more independent foreign policy than many of its neighbors, who tend to follow the lead of regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia.
    Doha has said it is ready for talks to end the crisis. Kuwait, which unlike most of its GCC neighbors has not cut ties with Qatar, has been heading up mediation efforts.
    US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has also called for compromise and hosted senior Gulf officials, but his efforts have been undermined by remarks from President Donald Trump apparently supporting Riyadh's position.
    Trump spoke separately on Sunday with the Saudi king, Abu Dhabi's crown prince and the Qatari emir on his concerns over the dispute, the White House said.
    Trump "underscored that unity in the region is critical," the statement said, but also "reiterated the importance of stopping terrorist financing and discrediting extremist ideology."
    Egypt said it would host the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on Wednesday to discuss the crisis.
    The German government also announced that Saudi Arabia's King Salman had cancelled plans to attend this week's G20 summit in Hamburg.

    The choice of music left social media users confused whether it was an honest mistake or a deliberate one.

    The noteworthy thing is that this is not the first time the Indian PM used a sci-fi reference at a significant platform.
    The newly-elected Modi in 2014, had uttered a Star Wars quote at an event in Madison Square garden ? much to his audience?s amusement. ?May the force be with you!? he had said.

    BEIJING: China said on Monday that India was violating an 1890 border agreement between Britain and China that previous Indian governments have pledged to uphold, and it should be respected to end a ?very serious? incursion by India.
    The border stand-off on a plateau next to the mountainous Indian state of Sikkim, which borders China, has ratcheted up tension between the neighbouring giants, who share a 3,500 km (2,175 miles) frontier, large parts of which are disputed.
    According to the Chinese interpretation of events, Indian guards crossed into China's Donglang region early in June and obstructed work on a road on the plateau.
    Troops from the two sides then confronted each other close to a strategic valley controlled by China that separates India from Bhutan - a close Indian ally - and gives China access to the so-called Chicken's Neck, a thin strip of land that connects India to its remote northeastern regions.
    Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing that the Sikkim part of the border had been settled in the 1890 agreement, and previous Indian governments had many times affirmed that in writing.
    ?Pacts must be respected - this is a basic principle of international law,? Geng said.
    Indian troops crossing onto the Chinese side were a violation of this historical agreement and the United Nations charter, he added.
    ?The nature of this is very serious,? Geng said, reiterating a demand for India to withdraw its troops to its side.
    India's Ministry of External Affairs referred to a statement it made on Friday when it warned China that construction of the road near their common border would have serious security implications.
    Analysts in New Delhi said that India had intervened on behalf of Bhutan. 
    As the tiny Himalayan Kingdom was not a party to the 1890 agreement between Britain and China, the dispute was between China and Bhutan over where their common border lies.
    Bhutan said last week that the road was being built inside its territory.
    Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are attending a summit of the G20 group of nations in the German city of Hamburg later this week.
    Geng would not be drawn on whether the two could meet there, saying bilateral meetings for Xi at the summit were being arranged.

    KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Monday passed a bill repealing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) ordinance, with the opposition parties lodging a strong protest over the bill.

    The opposition also indulged in sloganeering against the provincial government over the passing of the bill.
    The bill, repealing the NAB ordinance, was presented by provincial Law Minister Zia-ul-Hassan.
    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf?s (PTI) Khuram Sher Zaman, while addressing the media after the session, said the ruling party passed the bill to indulge in corruption.
    He alleged that the law minister is involved in corrupt practices and the PPP has no shame. 
    Earlier, the Sindh cabinet gave their approval to repeal the NAB ordinance in the province.
    The approval was given in a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah at the CM house after a briefing on the subject by Advocate General for Sindh Zamir Ghumro.
    NAB will now only have the mandate to probe and hear cases related to federal institutions.
    Corruption cases related to provincial institutions will now be probed by the Provincial Ehtesab Bureau, said the advocate general earlier.

    ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan on Monday announced promotions in the Pakistan Air Force advancing two Air Vice Marshals to the rank of Air Marshal and four Air Commodores to the rank of Air VIce Marshal. 
    Air Vice Marshal Shahid Akhtar Alvi and Air Vice Marshal Ahmer Shehzad were promoted to the rank of Air Marshal and Air Commodore Abrar Ahmed, Air Commodore Irfan Zaka, Air Commodore Irfan Ahmad and Air Commodore Asad Ikram to the rank of Air Vice Marshal. 


    Air Marshal Shahid Akhtar Alvi was commissioned in GD (P) Branch of Pakistan Air Force in November, 1984. During his illustrious career, he has commanded a Fighter Squadron, an Operational Air Base and a Regional Air Command. In his staff appointments he has served as Deputy Inspector General IG Branch, Senior Air Staff Officer Air Defence Command, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Security) and Director General Air Intelligence. He has also served as Air Attaché to India. Presently, he is performing his duties as Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Training) at Air Headquarters. He is a graduate of Combat Commanders? School, Air War College and National Defence University, Islamabad. He holds Master?s degrees in Strategic Studies and Defence & Strategic Studies. For rendering meritorious services to Pakistan Air Force, he has been awarded Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military).

    Air Marshal Ahmer Shehzad was commissioned in GD (P) Branch of Pakistan Air Force in November 1984. During his illustrious career, he has commanded Combat Commanders? In his staff appointments, he has served as Director Ops Project, Chief Project Director Falcon and Director General (Logistics) at Joint Staff Headquarters Chaklala.     US delegation was flown over the South Waziristan agency and was shown development in the area. -ISPR ISLAMABAD: US Senator John McCain on Monday termed the visit to South Waziristan, along with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and a delegation from the Senate Armed Services Committee, as important and informative.
    ?My colleagues and I from the US Senate have had a very informative and important visit, understanding the challenges, successes and the remaining challenges that require close coordination and assistance from us and with us,? said McCain while speaking to the media.
    He added that discussions have taken place regarding the importance of Pak-Afghan cooperation and with the right strategy and cooperation, success can be achieved.
    The US delegation was flown over the South Waziristan agency and was shown newly constructed posts and forts and development work including schools, colleges, sports stadium, hospitals and water supply schemes and development in the road infrastructure, said a statement released from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
    The military?s media wing added that the delegation also acknowledged the ?efforts and sacrifices of the Pakistan Army and of the local tribes for reestablishing peace and order in the area?.   
    "The senators reiterated the importance of institutionalised Pak-Afg border security coordination and cooperation mechanism," said the ISPR statement. 
    The US delegation was also scheduled to visit the Line of Control, but could not be flown to the area due to inclement weather.

    NEW YORK: Big power politics have stood in the way of promoting peaceful solutions for Kashmir and Palestine questions, according to Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi, who made a clarion call for major powers to help in settling the "two oldest unresolved issues" in the interest of global peace.

    "Palestine and Kashmir are similar," the Pakistani envoy said in an interview published in Al-Quds Al-Arabi, a widely circulated newspaper based in London, as she highlighted the two peoples' decades-long struggle for the right to self-determination in the face of heavy odds.
    "The question we ask in the Muslim world is: why is it that clear-cut Security Council resolutions on the two issues remain unimplemented?
    On Palestine, she said, the roadmap was very clear: the Security Council had continuously endorsed a two-state solution. What stood in the way was Israel's intransigence to accomplish that objective. In the case of Kashmir, it was India's intransigence in refusing to engage in negotiations with Pakistan aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the UN-recognized dispute. In the absence of any solution, she said more conflict would not be in the interest of the two regions.
    "In both cases somehow, the dynamics of great power politics have to be addressed and that is the challenge," Ambassador Lodhi added.

    Justice needs to be done in accordance with international law, morality, UN resolutions, while the collective voice of the International community was being cast aside, she said. At the same time, she noted when other issues emerge, they are taken up with speed.
    "Obviously, the people of Palestine and the people of Kashmir have a very natural feeling of brotherhood and solidarity for each other, they understand each others' predicament -- the suffering of the Palestinians and the plight of the Kashmiri people are identical because the promises made to them (by the international community) have been broken.
    "And those broken promises have led to a very, very dangerous security situation, both in the Middle-East and as well as in our part of the world."
    In Indian occupied Kashmir, she said, the kind of human rights violations going on are unprecedented in scope and intensity, noting that those atrocities have been condemned by international media. The OIC -- the organization of Islamic Cooperation -- has in every ministerial meeting issued communiqués expressing solidarity with the people of Kashmir and calling for a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
    "We are grateful to the Muslim world for standing with us, but I think what we do need is for the International community as a whole to respond to both the issues of Palestine and Kashmir. Both Kashmir and Palestine were not just cases of injustice, Ambassador Lodhi said, adding that these issues should be resolved because they could fuel the kind of tensions and conflict that could suck in many more countries than they already have.
    In South Asia, Ambassador Lodhi said that as the dispute involved two nuclear neighbours, Pakistan has always advocated a peaceful settlement "because that is the only path to take."

    Responding to a question, Ambassador Lodhi said Pakistan has and will always stand by the people of Palestine. "We are prepared to do and we have already done whatever is required ... we also raise our voice at the United Nations." There was need to forge unity in the Ummah so as to effectively focus international attention on the the issue. The OIC must speak with a united voice.
    "We see divisions in the Muslim world today that need to be addressed as lack of unity plays into the hands of our enemies." So, I think the Muslim world has to rise above these differences but these must be addressed by ourselves."
    As far as Pakistan was concerned, she said, the country had faced many challenges but it was turning the corner both in the security and economic fields.
    "We are now an economically stable and growing country which is becoming a very attractive destination for foreign investment," Ambassador Lodhi said.
    On the security front, she said Pakistan had managed to beat back the forces of terrorism and extremism, but the job will not be complete until the long war in Afghanistan comes to an end. Since the tragedy of 9/11, Pakistan has always advocated a political solution in Afghanistan, the military option had been tried and it had not resolved the problem. Pakistan has consistently called for insurgents to be brought into the mainstream. The suffering this causes to the peoples of the two countries should be brought to an end , she said, adding that Pakistan still hosts more than 2 million afghan refugees as a result of the Afghan war.
    No country has done more than Pakistan to dismantle and to eliminate Al-Qaeda from the region, the Pakistani envoy asserted. "That doesn?t mean there is no Al-Qaeda remnant left in our part of the world but the extent to which it exists is now nothing compared to the situation that it existed 16 years ago, and so Pakistan must get credit for it."
    Pakistan fought that war because it was also in its own interest. Noting that tens of thousands of lives have been lost, she said, Pakistan has been a principal victim of terrorism, but remains determined to eliminate the last terrorist from the country.

    The United Nations acknowledges that terrorism cannot and should not be linked with or be associated with any religion. But despite that international consensus, there were vested interests in certain countries who want to tarnish Islam by equating the two. "We reject this as a form of racism, as a form of discrimination, as a form of Islamophobia that is evident from time to time".

    Pakistan, among the OIC countries, has been in the forefront of raising its voice against Islamophobia at the United Nations, Ambassador Lodhi said, while calling for a dialogue among civilizations.
    At the same time, she said Pakistan opposes foreign military interventions in the Muslim world, citing the "illegal" invasion of Iraq. The countries that carried out such invasions without any thought, had to then face unintended consequences of such actions.

    The Bombay High Court has given the Maharashtra government two weeks to justify its decision to grant Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt early release from prison, after he was convicted in connection with the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.
    In 2013, Dutt was sentenced to five years in prison for possession of arms, which were part of a consignment used in the blasts that hit Mumbai on March 12, 1993, killing 257 people and injuring over 700 others.
    The actor had surrendered in May 2013 after the Indian Supreme Court upheld his conviction.
    However, Dutt was released in February 2016, eight months early, on account of his ?good conduct?.
    According to reports in the Indian media, the Bombay High Court has now asked the state government to file an affidavit detailing the ?parameters considered, and the procedures followed? in reaching the conclusion that Dutt deserved leniency.
    The order was given on a public interest litigation filed by a Pune resident, challenging regular paroles and furloughs granted to Dutt when he was serving his sentence.
    Dutt spent 18 months in jail during the investigation and the marathon trial.

    The documentary focuses on Bedouins in five different communities throughout Area C, which makes up 60 percent of the occupied West Bank and is currently under Israeli control.
    There are currently over 30,000 Palestinian Bedouins in 183 residential communities in Area C with 7,000 of them still at the risk of forcible transfer.
    Produced by Oxfam, the interactive web-based documentary seeks to "give a human face to the situation facing Bedouins in Area C" by letting them tell their own stories, Trepanier told Al-Jazeera.
    Divided into three parts, the films aims to take the viewer through a journey involving home demolitions, restrictions on movement and labour, and finally, relocation - realities that many Bedouin communities live through daily, according to Al-Jazeera.
    Trepanier uses the separation wall surrounding the occupied West Bank, for his documentary, to highlight the physical barrier that restricts many Bedouins from travel. The wall, still under construction, runs for more than 700km, annexing Palestinian land.
    Israel has denied the Bedouin?s, water, electricity and building permits.
    Access to water and electricity poses a big problem for the survival of Bedouin villages. Water pipelines run directly under many Bedouin homes, but Israel prohibits residents from using them. Instead, Bedouins must buy their water from a vendor and store it in tanks, making them spend more than they can afford.
    The lack of access to building permits allows the Israeli?s to expand its illegal settlements into Area C demolishing the structures.
    The traditional life of farming, herding and dairy production provides Bedouins with the income to buy water, a scarce resource in their communities.
    The film also takes into account the psychological effects that demolitions have had on residents, especially children - everything from bed-wetting to regression in academic progress, according to a study by Doctors of the World.

    ISLAMABAD: Reacting to the remarks of Prime Minister?s Political Secretary Asif Kirmani outside the Federal Judicial Academy on Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan said the ruling party is attempting to discredit the Panama case Joint Investigation Team (JIT) as it has failed to 'manage' it.

    In a message on Twitter, Khan shared a picture of PML-N leaders celebrating the Supreme Court's April 20 judgment and questioned how soon they have forgotten their celebrations over the formation of the JIT.
    PTI leader Asad Umar, too, targeted Kirmani in a series of tweets claiming that he should not have questioned the premier?s cousin Tariq Shafi?s summoning by the JIT with regard to the London apartments as the government itself had mentioned Shafi in the Supreme Court when asked where the money for the apartments had come from.
    Umar added that the PML-N had no right to complain about how the people whose names were stated in the Panama Papers were walking freely. ?You are the government. Go arrest them,? he said.
    In response to the backlash by the PTI leader, Kirmani questioned whether Umar was a member of the JIT which gave him the right to ask so many questions.
    ?We have answered all the queries posed by the JIT?, he said in a statement in response to Umar's series of tweets.
    Pointing fingers at the party, Kirmani stated that Imran Khan and his associates are the ones whose names are in the Panama Papers, not Nawaz Sharif?s.
    Meanwhile, commenting on Hasan Nawaz?s media talk following his third appearance before the JIT, Umar said Hasan should read the Supreme Court?s April 20 judgement instead of questioning why summons have been issued to him.
    He added that a 2011 letter by the Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan specifically mentions Hasan Nawaz as a suspect of money laundering. This letter, he stated, was part of the SECP?s case against the Chaudhary Sugar Mills which the JIT claimed has been tampered with by the SECP.

    ISLAMABAD: The Kashmiris' struggle for freedom has changed India's stance that has been trying to declare the endeavours a terrorist movement, said foreign affairs adviser Sartaj Aziz on Monday.
    While talking to the media, Aziz said a majority of the population in occupied Kashmir does not want to side with India. "India has occupied Kashmir on gunpoint."
    He added the Kashmir issue is essential for them and cannot be overlooked, which is why the Pakistani government will not hold talks with India without Kashmir being part of the deliberations.
    "Pakistan will continue to provide political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiris' struggle," Aziz said.
    Stance on Syed Salahuddin
    While talking about Syed Salahuddin, who has been recently declared a "global terrorist" by the United States, Aziz said the decision is not made by the United Nations.
    He added it was not necessary for them to agree with US' decision.

    Rumman Raees taking tips from bowling coach Azhar Mahmood/File photo LAHORE: A 10-week National High Performance Cricket Camp commenced at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on Monday.
    The camp has been organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) keeping in view the future commitments of the Pakistan cricket team, where the players would be trained under the supervision of NCA coaches, said a PCB spokeswoman.
    On the first two days of the camp, Monday and Tuesday, the players would undergo one-on-one session with the NCA coaches, where they will work on the data collection related to them.
    The players would undergo practice session from Wednesday, July 5.

    King Salman has frequently been lauded by columnists in local media, in traditional deference to authority, since the 81-year-old assumed office in 2015.
    But Ramadan al-Anzi´s column in Al Jazeera newspaper describing King Salman as "Haleem", or forbearing, and "Shadeed al-Eqab", strict in punishment - both terms associated in Islam with God - appeared to have gone too far.
    Attributing divine qualities or giving individuals any of the 99 names of God is frowned upon in the kingdom.
    The newspaper published an apology late on Saturday.
    "The phrases and tribute which the author bestowed on the personality of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, are not acceptable, despite what God had bestowed upon him, may God protect him, of the honour of serving the two holy mosques, Islam, the homeland and the people," Al Jazeera wrote.
    Saudi media reported that the king had ordered that action be taken against the newspaper, but no specifics were given.
    In a message to Information Minister Awwad bin Saleh Alawwad, the king wrote that he was "astonished by some of the phrases used in the column", according to Okaz newspaper.
    Online newspaper, sabq, quoted the king as saying in his written complaint: "This is an issue that has distressed us, we don´t accept it and don´t approve of it, recognising its dangers and the danger of being lenient towards it.?

    SAN PEDRO HUAMELULA: Town mayor Victor Aguilar got married to a crocodile in a symbolic ceremony to mark the local harvest tradition.
    Mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, a southern Mexican village, married the crocodile as part of a ritual which has been practiced by the Chontal Indians since 1789.
    The ceremony is reckoned to bring plenty of harvest as well as fish, shrimp and other seafood to the fishermen of this village along the Pacific coast of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca state.
    According to CNN, Mayor Victor Aguilar said "the Mareños call [the crocodile] a 'princess' and the role I play is being the husband to the princess."
    After the ceremony, there's more music and dancing, including a dance between reptile and groom.
    Prior to the ritual, the wedding participants walked with the crocodile bride through the town accompanied by band music. The ceremony was held at the town hall.
    The town residents consider crocodile as a ?princess? whose happiness then brings peace and prosperity to their community.

    File photo Up to 54 Taliban insurgents have been killed and 33 others injured during Afghan army operations in Afghanistan?s southern Helmand province on Sunday night, the provincial government said in a statement released Monday.
    ?Afghan special forces conducted night operations against insurgents in Nawa district on Sunday night which resulted in killing of 42 rebels and injuring 27 others," the statement said.
    According to the statement, four Taliban local commanders were also among those killed. Security forces also seized weapons and 18 motorbikes during the operations, Chinese media outlet Xinhua reported.
    Airstrikes were also carried out by the Afghan air force on two important bases of the Taliban militants in the outskirts of Helmand provincial capital Lashkargah over the past 24 hours, in which 12 more insurgents were killed and six others injured, the statement added.
    Over the past few years, Helmand has been considered an important stronghold of the Taliban militants.

    Thirty-one people were injured, some seriously, when a coach burst into flames after colliding with a lorry on a motorway in the German state of Bavaria on Monday, police said on Twitter.
    There were 48 people on the bus at the time of the crash. A police spokesman told broadcaster n-tv that 17 people were unaccounted for and he expected several had died.

    KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered on Monday that DIG Prisons Ashraf Nizamani should be suspended over the issue pertaining to escape of two under-trial prisoners from Central Jail, Karachi.

    In a briefing session held at CM House, Shah remarked that a show-cause notice has been issued to the DIG.
    Shah was informed that the SHO did not register the FIR of the issue correctly. 
    Moreover, there are about 6,000 prisoners present in the jail, Shah was informed.

    On Sunday, Karachi Central Jail Assistant Superintendent Ayaz Salik was arrested over charges of terrorism.
    On June 15, two under-trial prisoners (UTPs), Sheikh Muhammad alias Firon and Ahmed Khan alias Manako, managed to escape from the jail?s judicial complex, where they were brought for a hearing.
    Following the escape of the two UTPs who reportedly belonged to the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, 12 police personnel, including the jail superintendent, were arrested at the behest of the Sindh law and prisons minister.
    A case was also registered against them in the New Town Police Station.
    The CTD is leading the investigation into the jail break.
    The two fugitives were arrested by the CTD in 2013 over involvement in dozens of targeted killings.
    Later, investigations showed that the two prisoners were also aided by other inmates as well.

    BAHAWALPUR: Three more people injured in the Ahmedpur Sharqia oil tanker fire succumbed to burn wounds on Monday, taking the death toll to 206.
    According to Bahawal Victoria Hospital focal person Dr Amir Mehmood the injured were under treatment at Nishtar Hospital in Multan. He added 65 others were still being treated for the burn wounds.
    Federal, Punjab govts issued notices
    Lahore High Court has sought replies from the federal and Punjab governments over the investigation request pertaining to the Ahmedpur Sharqia incident.
    LHC Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah issued the notices over the petition filed by a local, who has requested an investigation be carried out into the matter. The petitioner has expressed concern over the death toll that continues to rise.

    Wimbledon 2017 will be without the star power of Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams LONDON: With Serena Williams preparing for the birth of her first child and Maria Sharapova sidelined by a thigh injury, the race to be crowned Wimbledon champion is the most wide-open in a generation.
    Having stepped away from the court as she waits to become a mother in September, Williams, who won Wimbledon in 2015 and 2016, has created a power vacuum at the top that Sharapova was expected to fill when the Russian returned from her doping suspension.
    Instead, Sharapova lasted just three tournaments before a muscle injury in Rome forced the five-time major winner to withdraw from the Wimbledon qualifying tournament.
    In the absence of American great Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam titles on her CV, and the headline-grabbing Sharapova, women´s tennis has an undeniable lack of star power heading into Wimbledon, which gets underway on Monday.
    But the flip-side is the opportunity for the sport´s less heralded names to seize the spotlight, as Latvia´s Jelena Ostapenko showed with her unexpected breakthrough triumph at the French Open.

    Kerber, who starts against Irina Falconi, needs to improve dramatically after making unwanted history when her defeat against Ekaterina Makarova made her the first top-ranked woman in the Open era to fall in the opening round at Roland Garros.
    Beaten by Serena in the Wimbledon final 12 months ago, Kerber, who won the Australian and US Opens last year, has yet to claim a single WTA title in 2017.
    If Petra Kvitova gets her hands on the Venus Rosewater Dish for a third time, it would complete a fairytale comeback for the Czech following the horrific hand injury she sustained while being attacked by a knife-wielding burglar in her home in December.

    "We still do have great players in the draw, even (though) Serena is not playing.
    "It´s very open. So who knows who going to win."
    Five-time Wimbledon winner Venus Williams, aged 37, will be another sentimental favourite.
    Former world number one Victoria Azarenka is back in action after taking a year off to become a mother.
    "My life has taken a 180-degree turn but I have not lost my competitive spirit," Azarenka said.
