    LONDON: Britain's public broadcaster BBC came under fire on Wednesday for its gender pay imbalance after it was forced to reveal how much it pays its top-earning talent.

    For the first time in its 94-year existence, the BBC was this year forced to release a list of its employees paid more than £150,000 ($195,000, 170,000 euros) between 2016/2017, after a change in its charter last year.
    More than 200 names feature on the list -- which includes executives, actors, presenters, writers and technicians -- but only one third are women.
    Former Top Gear host Chris Evans was revealed to be the highest-paid person, earning over £2.2 million, while presenter Claudia Winkleman was named as the top female earner, pocketing more than £450,000.
    Winkleman hosts "Strictly Come Dancing", Britain's version of "Dancing With The Stars".
    In a statement, the BBC's Director-General Lord Hall defended the organisation as "more diverse than the broadcasting industry and the civil service" but admitted that "there is more to do".
    "We've set a clear target for 2020: we want all our lead and presenting roles to be equally divided between men and women," he added.
    Culture Secretary Karen Bradley told parliament last year that releasing the list would ensure the organisation "produces value for money" for licence fee payers and that more transparency could lead to savings.
    Britain's licence fee, which pays for the BBC, stands at £147 per year.
    But Hall defended the organisation's high salaries, telling BBC radio earlier in the day that it operates in a "very competitive market".
    He argued that the BBC had reduced talent salaries by 25 percent in the past four years and said publishing the list was a "bad idea" because it could tempt other companies to poach talent.
    Questioned on Twitter over his pay, former footballer turned presenter Gary Lineker revealed that he had turned down higher salary offers from a privately owned broadcaster "because I love and value my job and BBC Sport".
    Lineker was the BBC's second-highest earner last year, pocketing £1.7 million.
    Among the other well-known names on the list are ex-tennis professional John McEnroe (more than £150,000) and Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi (over £200,000).
    Presenter Graham Norton also appeared on the list for his radio hosting duty for which he pocketed £850,000, but his overall income is believed to be much higher.
    The sum did not include his salary for his famous chat show because it is produced by an independent company.

    RAWALPINDI: Under the ongoing operation Radd-ul-Fasaad, Punjab Rangers, Counter-terrorism Department, police and security agencies conducted a combined operation, arresting 11 facilitators from a proscribed organisation, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations statement.
    According to the military?s media cell, the combined operations were conducted in Lahore, DG Khan and Rawalpindi.
    The arrested terrorists belong to proscribed Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, according to the ISPR.
    The security forces recovered arms and ammunition as well from the terrorists? possession.
    According to the ISPR, the ammunition was to be used to in terrorist activities in Punjab.
    Pakistan had launched a nationwide military operation 'Radd-ul-Fasaad' in February 2017, which was based on broad-spectrum security and counter-terrorism operations in Punjab, and continuation of ongoing operations across the country.

    Appeal submitted by the convicts was examined during the hearing held today ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended the death sentence of two prisoners convicted by the military courts. 
    An appeal submitted by the convicts was examined during the hearing held today with Justice Aijaz Fazl heading the three-member bench. 
    The court issued a notice to the concerned parties and adjourned the hearing for an indefinite period. 
    The convicts, Fazl Rabbi and Saeed Raheem, were convicted of terror activities in Swat. 
    Earlier in March, President Mamnoon Hussain signed the 28th Amendment Bill 2017 extending military courts for another two years.
    The bill, following the President?s signature, is now an Act of Parliament. Under this Act, the duration of the military courts has been extended for another two years, starting from January 7, 2017.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesman Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday said the Supreme Court's decision on the Panama Papers case will come by Friday.

    Addressing the media outside the Supreme Court, Chaudhry said the counsel of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif informed the court about the financial assets of the prime minister's father, however, he was silent about the assets of Hussain and Hasan Nawaz.
    Chaudhry said the son of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif became a billionaire when he was only 16-years-old and ironically the premier did not know about it.
    The PTI spokesman alleged that the prime minister and his sons lied to the court and the judiciary understands that the petitioner did not provide any valid documents to them.
    He further added that all companies of Hussain Nawaz were making losses yet in six-years the prime minister son has come to own as many as 13 companies.
    The PTI spokesman also said that whenever the opposing side's lawyers ask for time from the courts ? a new Qatari letter suddenly comes forward.

    PTI's Naeemul Haque also used strong words to condemn the PML-N's allegations on his party chief Imran Khan.
    ?I say Nawaz Sharif does not come to court because he fears arrest, he is the biggest criminal in the country?s history,? Haque said.
    In an angry tirade, Haque fumed that PML-N had broken all records of using inappropriate language.

    He also alleged that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai have taken undue favours from the premier to ?sell their conscience'.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan on Wednesday claimed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has indulged in corruption in the name of business. 
    He added the premier was given five chances to tell the truth and come clean in front of the people of the country.
    ?He was given five chances to tell the truth to the people, starting with the first hearing in the Supreme Court and the last chance being the JIT.?
    The PTI chief also referred to incumbent Finance Minister Ishaq Dar as the "biggest conman of Pakistan".
    Reiterating his call for the premier?s resignation, Imran alleged that the business entities of the Sharif family have served as a front for money laundering.
    The PTI chief said Nawaz was given ample chances to prove the money trail, more so after the Sharif family had accepted the properties in question as theirs.
    ?The JIT was formed by the Supreme Court so Nawaz Sharif could answer the questions he could not answer in court,? added the PTI chief. 
    Imran questioned how the assets of the Sharif family increased year after year as the business entities they owned were continuously were in the red. 
    He also alleged the development schemes initiated during Nawaz's tenure were meant to siphon of funds from those projects through front companies. 
    "When Nawaz Sharif became chief minister of Punjab years ago, Ittefaq Foundry went into a loss. Yet by 1993, the family had 30 factories."
    "The JIT brought to the forefront one fact, the business of the Sharif family is corruption," alleged the PTI chief. 
    Referring to electoral reforms, Imran asked for voting rights for overseas Pakistan and said bio-metric voting should be introduced in the country to tackle rigging during elections.

    Photo: File RAWALPINDI: The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Wednesday said that the Afghan Ministry of Defence?s response to operation Khyber 4 is unwarranted.
    The Afghan Defence Minister Dawlat Waziri in a statement said that Pakistan military should have launched the military operations ? monitored by the United States and China -- in terrorist centers based in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.
    ?Military operations need to be launched on both sides of the Durand Line. Everyone understands the terrorist centers are located in Pakistan; Quetta Council, Peshawar Council and Miranshah Council that are Taliban groups,? Waziri?s spokesman said.
    ?[The] response runs counter to Pakistan Army?s efforts for better Pak-Afghan coordination and cooperation,? the ISPR statement said.
    The statement further said that information about Operation Khyber 4 was shared twice ?verbally and in written? with Afghan Forces as well as the Resolute Support Mission, and Office of the Defense Representative (ODRP).
    ?Pakistan Army looks forward for trust based security coordination and cooperation for fight against common enemy,? the ISPR press release reads. ?Rhetoric of blames and suggestive allegations are agenda of forces working against order and peace in the region which should be avoided.?

    KARACHI: Pak Sar Zameen Party (PSP) Chairman Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday said the party will not resort to violence and they will not be the one to give weapons in the hands of their workers.
    Kamal?s remarks came a day after a PSP worker was shot dead and another injured in the Orangi Town area of the metropolis.
    ?We have not indulged in violence, we will not indulge in violence,? said Kamal.
    He added that even though a PSP worker was shot dead, they did not call a strike, shut shops or burn cars as was the norm a few years ago.
    ?The citizens of Karachi need to support PSP if they want to see a peaceful Karachi.?
    ?We are the wall that will stop Altaf Hussain?s return to the metropolis as we do not want Karachi to return its darkest days,? added the PSP chief.
    Kamal also requested the authorities and those in power to trace down the assailants behind attacks on PSP workers and award them the strictest punishment.

    The weather turned pleasant after parts of the metropolis received heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds on Wednesday afternoon.

    Citizens living in the areas of Gurumandir, Lasbela, Saddar, II Chundrigar and Urdu Bazar enjoyed the rainfall. 
    It was also reported that several of those commuting via motorcycles on those routes slipped due to slippery roads and the rain caused minor flooding on some roads of the metropolis. 
    The metropolis also received light showers in the wee hours of Tuesday.
    According to the meteorological office, most rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-e-Hadeed with 8.5mm, followed by in Landhi with 4.5mm. Areas around PAF Base Faisal received 2mm rain.
    According to the Met office, the process of light drizzle in the city could continue for some time.

    MUMBAI: India captain Virat Kohli said Wednesday he wants a good working relationship with new coach Ravi Shastri after the acrimonious departure of Anil Kumble.
    And the skipper expressed confidence he can make it work with Shastri. "We know what's expected and what's on the plate," he said ahead of India's departure for a tour of Sri Lanka.
    Kohli was accused of forcing out Kumble after the spin legend resigned last month, saying his relationship with the captain had become "untenable".
    Kohli kept silent during the selection process that culminated in the return of Shastri, who was team director between 2014-16.
    Speaking to media with Shastri at his side, Kohli spoke of the captain-coach relationship and the way ahead for the world number one Test side.
    "We have worked together for three years. I don't think I need to understand anything else. We know what's expected and what's on the plate. I don't think it will require any effort," Kohli said.
    "A lot of speculations and lot of things fly around, those things are not in my control.
    "My job is to try and get the best out of this team along with the management and perform to the best of my abilities which I believe in," the star batsman added.
    Shastri, who has been given a two-year contract running up to the 2019 World Cup, also spoke of the need to communicate better in order for a team to prosper.
    "I carry on from where I left. I don't come with any baggage... My job is to put every player in a frame of mind where he is thinking only about his role and the team he is playing for," said the former all-rounder.
    Shastri, 55, edged other high-profile names including compatriot Virender Sehwag and Australia's Tom Moody after a tough selection process.
    But Shastri insisted that while coaches may come and go, it is the team which should get the credit for any success.
    "The team has done exceedingly well over three years and they are the people who deserve the credit more than anyone else. Ravi Shastris, Anil Kumbles will come and go," said Shastri.
    "The fabric of Indian cricket will remain and the credit should go to everyone who's participated in this Indian team."
    India will play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 game in Sri Lanka. The first Test starts on July 26 in Galle.

    Lecointre, a member of Prime Minister Edouard Philippe's staff who served in the army in Bosnia, replaces General Pierre de Villiers, who resigned abruptly on Wednesday after a clash with President Emmanuel Macron over defence budget cuts.
    In a statement, 60 year-old Pierre de Villiers said he had tried to maintain a French defense force with the ability to do an increasingly difficult job within the financial constraints imposed on it, but was no longer able to sustain that.
    "In the current circumstances I see myself as no longer able to guarantee the robust defense force I believe is necessary to guarantee the protection of France and the French people, today and tomorrow, and to sustain the aims of our country," he said.
    Macron had accepted his resignation, de Villiers added.
    A fierce row broke out last week between the two men just two months after Macron was elected, and just as France prepared for the military pomp of a July 14 Bastille Day parade where Macron's U.S. counterpart Donald Trump was the guest of honor.
    De Villiers, appearing before a closed-door hearing of parliamentarians - had used strong language to protest at the 850 million euro ($979.46 million) defense budget cut Macron was making as part of his efforts to rein in state spending.
    "I won't let myself be fucked like that," he said according to two parliamentary sources. "I may be stupid, but I know when I am being had."
    Macron had gone public with his rebuke. "I have made commitments, I am your boss," he said in a speech to dozens of top army officers and their families.

    "The Islamic Republic of Iran will always stick to its international commitments," Rouhani said in a televised cabinet meeting.
    But if the US wants "to press forward with new sanctions under any pretext... the great nation of Iran will respond appropriately," he said.
    "We will not forgive violations by the Americans and we will stand against them."
    His comments came a day after the US and Iran traded tit-for-tat sanctions over the Islamic republic's ballistic missile programme.
    The State Department slapped sanctions on 18 individuals and entities in Iran, hours after the White House admitted Tehran was sticking to the 2015 agreement.
    Iran hit back with its own sanctions against "American people and entities that have acted against the Iranian people and other Muslim peoples of the region."
    Rouhani on Wednesday accused Washington of "duplicity".
    "On one hand they send official reports to Congress verifying that Iran has been completely loyal to the nuclear deal," Rouhani said.
    "On other hand they seek new sanctions under various excuses against logic (and) the spirit and text" of the accord, he said.
    Iran's parliament on Tuesday voted to streamline a bill that would increase funding for the country's missile programme and Revolutionary Guards in response to Washington's "adventurism" in the region.
    An overwhelming majority of lawmakers voted to prioritise the motion that would see an additional $260 million allocated to developing the missile programme and the same amount to the elite Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations wing, the Quds Force.
    Rouhani accused his American counterpart Donald Trump of breaking international deals on Cuba, North Korea and climate change, all reached under Trump's predecessor Brack Obama.
    He said Washington was pushing Iran to "abandon its commitments" and that the US was "worried over improved economic relations between Iran and Asia and Europe".
    "We are happy that so far the 5+1 (world powers) have stood strongly to protect" the nuclear deal, he said.

    According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Bajwa visited the Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) where he was given a detailed briefing on defence production of the industry including ongoing and future defence projects.
    During his visit, COAS appreciated the performance and commitment of the industry towards quality production. ?HIT has a history of contributions to strengthen conventional defence capability of the country. No compromise shall be made towards this end irrespective of the constraints,? COAS said.

    ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Sirajul Haq on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is being deceptively portrayed innocent.
    In a media address outside the Supreme Court, the JI chief emphasised that the Sharif family's lawyer did not have a strong case to present today in the third Panama case hearing after the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) submitted its final report to the court.
    "The entire nation stands by the Supreme Court," Haq said. "The courts are free and the nation is with them."
    The political and spiritual leader alleged that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had expropriated public money and put forward the question if the country will be led by democratically elected leaders in the future.
    The Panama case implementation bench observed on Wednesday that they have to decide whether to hear the case themselves or send it to an accountability court.

    Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, who heads the special three-member Supreme Court bench, said they also have to see if there is anything in the documents linking the premier to the case.
    During today's hearing, the bench also repeatedly inquired from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's counsel regarding the money trail of the London properties.
    The premier's counsel, Khawaja Harris, could not provide the bench with a satisfactory answer as he resumed his arguments from Tuesday.

    The day is observed to commemorate the resolution adopted at the platform of All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference in Srinagar in 1947 demanding Kashmir's accession to Pakistan.

    In Mirpur, a seminar was held with coordination of various social, political, traders, and public representative organisations.
    Various rallies were also organised to reiterate complete solidarity with the people of Pakistan.
    AJK President Masood Khan and Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, in an event held in Muzaffarabad, called for the withdrawal of the Indian army from Kashmir and release of innocent civilians in state custody.
    They also hoped that the determination of the Kashmiri people to continue their struggle till the whole State's accession to Pakistan is achieved soon.

    In their separate messages on the occasion, they said Kashmiri Muslims have chosen Pakistan as their final destination.
    Meanwhile, All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman Syed Ali Gilani said the arrogant approach and wrong policies of India are continuously instigating bloodshed in the territory.
    In a telephonic address to the people at the funeral prayers of a martyred youth, Showkat Ahmad Lohar, at Dialgam in Islamabad district of Indian occupied Kashmir, he said Indian troops are committing atrocities against innocent Kashmiris.
    Referring to a recent statement of Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat, Gilani said Kashmiri youth are being pushed to the wall and compelled to choose other options of resentment under a well thoughtout plan.

    NEW YORK: Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," whose reggaeton beat has swept the globe, on Wednesday was named the most streamed song of all time.
    The song's label, Universal Music Latin Entertainment, said "Despacito" in its original and remixed versions had reached 4.6 billion streams across platforms including YouTube and Spotify.
    "Despacito" -- which features Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee -- went viral soon after its release in January and found an even wider audience in April when pop celebrity Justin Bieber appeared in a remix.
    "Despacito" dethroned another track with Bieber, the Canadian's 2015 song "Sorry," which has 4.38 billion plays, according to Universal.
    "Despacito" -- which means "slowly" in Spanish -- has spent 10 weeks at number one on the US singles chart, the first Spanish-language song to reach the top spot since "Macarena" in 1996.
    "Streaming is a connector for audiences worldwide and it has helped my music reach every corner of the planet," Fonsi said in a statement.
    Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, the world's largest label conglomerate, called "Despacito" the biggest hit of 2017.
    "Streaming has opened up the possibility of a song with a different beat, from a different culture and in a different language to become a juggernaut of success around the world," Grainge said in a statement.
    Reggaeton -- which has roots in Jamaican dance hall and hip-hop -- has historically provided a voice to black Puerto Ricans and has been shunned by the US territory's elite.
    Streaming -- the on-demand selection of music online -- has rapidly grown in recent years.
    No central body combines streaming data across all platforms, giving leeway to labels to announce figures and feats.
    "Despacito" has soared on YouTube where it is already the fourth most watched video ever at 2.66 billion views.
    While popular on Spotify, it was in 39th place on the all-time list Wednesday.

    The furry marsupial emerged from its mother's pouch at the Richard Underwood Nature Refuge in Queensland state - AFP SYDNEY: The population of one of the world's rarest species has been boosted with the birth of a northern hairy-nosed wombat joey, Australian wildlife officials said Wednesday.
    The arrival of the furry marsupial comes as a conservation programme to save the animal -- which numbers just 250 in the wild -- gathers steam.
    The joey emerged from its mother's pouch at the Richard Underwood Nature Refuge in Queensland state, which was established just eight years ago and is one of only two known colonies remaining.
    Queensland Environment Minister Steven Miles said wildlife officers had been closely observing the mother for the past 10 months.
    "It's been a long wait for the wombat specialist team, but finally it's confirmed that the joey has successfully left the pouch," he said.
    "This is the first addition to the reintroduced colony of northern hairy-nosed wombats in five years, and it indicates the new male brought in last year is settling in well."
    The only known colonies of the animal are both in Queensland -- at the Richard Underwood Nature Refuge and Epping Forest National Park.
    When numbers dropped in Epping in 2009, the state government established the second refuge. The species' numbers have begun slowly recovering.
    "This little joey is an important new arrival for the colony, and highlights that this refuge provides suitable conditions for successful breeding," said Miles.
    Australia has three species of wombat -- the common wombat, northern hairy-nosed wombat and southern hairy-nosed wombat.
    Their main threats are wild dogs, disease and competition for food from kangaroos.

    The Pakistani side was headed by Foreign Ministry's Mansoor Ahmed Khan and included Southern Command Inspector General Frontier Corps Major General Sardar Tariq.
    An FO spokesperson said issues related to the Pak-Iran border were discussed in the meeting. Both sides agreed to fully implement the 1960 Pak-Iran border agreement, the spokesperson added.
    The two parties also agreed to enhance joint cooperation against drug smugglers, human traffickers and terrorists. 
    Both sides also agreed to refrain from violating the 917-kilometres-long border between the two countries, the FO stated further. 
    The international border linking Pakistan's Balochistan and Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan province is the site of frequent turmoil, both between the state security forces and terrorists operating in each other's territory. 
    On Saturday, Iran claimed two of its civilians were killed when militants from Pakistan opened fire.

    Late last month, an Iranian drone was shot down in Balochistan's Panjgur District along the border. "The drone was hit by Pakistan Air Force jets as it was unidentified and flying around three to four kilometres inside Pakistani territory," an FO statement had stated.
    On May 27, a man was killed in mortar shelling from the Iranian side of the border in Panjgur district.
    The district commissioner (DC) of Panjgur said a mortar shell landed on a vehicle, instantly killing one man inside and causing extensive damage nearby.

    The DC added that a strong protest has been lodged with the Iranian border authorities. 
    A week earlier, five mortar shells fired from Iran landed in the Chaghai area of the province. No casualties were reported in the incident.
    In April, ten Iranian border guards were killed by militants said to be operating from Pakistan. Iran said that Jaishal Adl militants had shot the guards with long-range guns, fired from inside Pakistan.
    Later, the head of the Iranian armed forces warned Islamabad that Tehran would hit bases inside Pakistan if the government does not confront militants who carry out cross-border attacks.
    The situation was later resolved via dialogue and the rhetoric subsided.

    GURGAON, India: Bidisha Bezbaruah who acted in Jagga Jasoos was found dead at her residence here on Monday evening.

    Police had been informed by the father of the actress that she had not been receiving his calls. Police investigated the matter and found Bidisha hanging from a ceiling fan in her apartment. No suicide note was recovered.
    He father had claimed in his complaint that Bidisha had a love marriage but would often fight with her husband. Her husband has been arrested after the complaint.
    Investigation teams are examining Bidisha?s social networking accounts and mobile phone.
    A native of Assam and well known TV personality, Bidisha Bezbaruah had recently appeared in a supporting role in the Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif starrer Jagga Jasoos.

    Winners of the men´s and women´s singles titles will each earn $3.7 million, while runners-up will pocket $1.825 million from the $50.4 million total pot.
    The men?s and women?s doubles champion teams will each earn $675,000, also the highest in US Open history.
    The qualifying tournament for the season´s final grand slam will offer more than $2.9 million in prize money, a 49.2 percent increase from 2016.
    "Five years ago, we committed to the players that total player compensation for players would reach $50 million at the US Open, and we are honoring that commitment,? USTA President Katrina Adams said in a statement.
    "In addition to unprecedented prize money increases, players also will see a host of new amenities at this year?s tournament including upgrades to player dining, a more generous meal allowance, upgrades to all player workout facilities, and additional quiet room space.
    "Our goal is to make every experience at the US Open, whether for the players, our fans, or our partners, the best, world-class experience possible."
    The US Open runs from Aug. 28 to Sept. 10 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows, New York.

    PM Nawaz Sharif inaugurates Business and Trade Centre in Sialkot  SIALKOT: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Sialkot on Wednesday where he inaugurated the newly established Business and Trade Centre.
    A joint venture of the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, the Business and Trade Centre is aimed at promoting trade, business, industrial and export activities in the region.
    The Prime Minister is scheduled to address office-bearers of the SCCI today. He will also speak to PML-N members at the residence of Defence Minister Khawaja Asif later in the day.

    The Director General (SA & SAARC) Dr Mohammad Faisal handed over a letter of protest to Indian Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh.
    Indian forces resorted to unprovoked firing on Sunday and targeted a Pakistan Army vehicle across the Line of Control (LoC), according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
    Indian forces fired on the vehicle at Athmaqam area across the LoC, the ISPR said in a statement, in fresh violation of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries.
    As a consequence, four soldiers were martyred after the vehicle plunged into Neelum River.
    The Pakistan Army retaliated to the cross-border fire and gave a fitting response to the enemy, according to the ISPR statement.
    On July 10, five Pakistani civilians, including four women, were martyred after Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing Rawalakot sector, Satwal, Manwal, Tatrinote areas. The incident also left four others, including three girls, injured.
    In response, Pakistan Army destroyed two Indian check-posts leaving four enemy troops dead.

    Mourinho has never spent longer than three years as manager of a club during his trophy-laden career LOS ANGELES: Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he is targeting a 15-year stay at Old Trafford, telling ESPN in an interview on Tuesday he wants to restore the stability of the Alex Ferguson era.
    Mourinho, who took over the Premier League giants last year, told the network´s website that he is desperate to deliver sustained success over a long-term period just as Ferguson did over nearly three decades.
    United have not won the Premier League title since Ferguson´s retirement in 2013, with the club struggling to rediscover its dominance under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
    Mourinho has never spent longer than three years as manager of a club during his trophy-laden career.
    But the 54-year-old, speaking as his team prepare to face Manchester City in Houston on Thursday in the latest leg of their US tour, insisted he saw United as a long-term project.
    "I am ready for this," Mourinho told ESPN. "I am ready for the next 15, I would say. Here? Yes, why not?
    "I have to admit that it is very difficult because of the pressure around our jobs, everybody putting pressure on managers and things that people say -- that we have to win, but in reality only one can win and every year it is getting more difficult.
    Sir Alex Ferguson's 27-year reign at United will never be emulated in the modern game, says Mourinho "This club, for so many years, was Sir Alex. People got used to it; people understood the great consequences of that stability.
    "After David [Moyes] and Mr. [Louis] Van Gaal, I come to my second year and hopefully I can stay and give that stability that the club wants. I will try, but again, I will have to try to deserve that, but that´s what I try every day that I work."
    Mourinho believes Ferguson´s 27-year reign at United will never be emulated in the modern game.
    "I think Sir Alex´s career is unique," Mourinho said. "I don´t think it is possible to emulate.
    "Nobody is going to be in the same club for so many years, be in the same league for so many years. I think [Arsenal manager Arsene] Wenger will be the last with a similar story in terms of staying at a club for so many years.
    "But I what I try to do in modern football nowadays is to try to deserve to stay in the club, because in this moment, it is about success. You have success, you stay in the club. You don´t have success, you don´t stay."

    The women who wear headscarves now have emojis of their own, thanks to a 16-year-old who proposed the idea to Unicode Consortium, a non-profit corporation that reviews and develops new emojis.

    ?I?m really happy with what it looks like,? 16-year-old Rayouf Alhumedhi, who lives in Vienna, told CNN. "I saw so many ideas, different colors and styles but I didn't know what it would finally look like. I'm just so excited because it's finally came out after all the work, all the writing."
    Although the idea was proposed last year, Apple has only recently accepted it. The digital image was unveiled Monday on World Emoji Day as one from a collection of new emoji characters to be available on Apple devices later this year.
    Rayouf saw the new emoji for the first time Monday night when a friend sent her a message linking to a BuzzFeed article. "I got the news just like everybody else!" she said.
    When the idea popped up
    She first had the idea when she and her friends were creating a group chat on WhatsApp and Rayouf had to emoji to represent her.
    "The fact that there wasn't an emoji to represent me and the millions of other hijabi women across the world was baffling to me," she said. "I really had no initial idea in my mind of what it was supposed to look like, I just wanted it to be available in different skin tones ? millions of women from different races do wear it."
    As the idea popped in her mind, she drafted a proposal on her laptop and sent it to Unicode Consortium.
    And Rayouf did not have to wait for long. She quickly gathered support. A member of the Unicode emoji subcommittee, Jennifer 8. Lee, put Rayouf in touch with Aphee Messer, who worked with the 16-year-old to design the emoji.
    Although she got immense support for the idea, some people described the emoji as unnecessary and ?part of patriarchal constructs that oppress women?.
    And reaction on social media since Monday's announcement has been equally mixed.
    "The hijab is a symbol of oppression," wrote Joeymp on Twitter, replying to a tweet by Apple Chief Executive Officer Timothy Cook. "By including it as an emoji you are showing your support for the oppression of women."
    Another person tweeted about faith in humanity being restored because of such emojis being introduced.
    Catering to different communities
    The Unicode Consortium has dramatically increased the number of official emoji in recent years. It has approved 2,666 emoji as of June, up from 722 just two years ago. It has also made a greater effort to include diverse skin tones, flags and occupations.
    Rayouf is aware that the emoji is contentious. "It will cause controversy," she said Tuesday. "Some people will try and pervert it, use the emoji in a hurtful way to perpetuate stereotypes.
    "But overall, I think the Muslim community will benefit from it. Even if only in terms of representation. It's only an emoji. It's not a game changer. But it will make people happy. I hope so."
    The 16-year-old hopes the image of women wearing headscarves will promote tolerance too.
    ?It will establish the notion that we are normal people carrying out daily routines just like you," she said last year.

    The unexpected decline in the USD's value from Rs105.39 to Rs105.30 during early trading hours was followed by a 126-points increase in the KSE-100 index, which crossed the 45,762 points level.
    A special implementation bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, began hearing the Panama Papers case early Wednesday. The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) is expected to react to the socio-political situation as the hearing proceeds.
    Earlier on July 11, the PSX reacted negatively to Monday?s damning report against the prime minister and his family by the Panama case Joint Investigation Team to drop by over 2,153 points to reach 44,120 points on Tuesday.
    Investors took a cumulative hit of Rs425 billion, informed sources, adding that share value of as many as 305 companies fell.

Photo: HBO Ed Sheeran´s Twitter page reappeared on Tuesday with a spring clean of old tweets after a brief disappearance prompted speculation that the singer had quit the social media platform after mixed reaction to his cameo on TV show "Game of Thrones."
    Sheeran´s Twitter account, which boasts 14 million followers, appeared to have been deactivated on Monday.
    On Tuesday, it was live again, but many of Sheeran´s 30,000 tweets, including recent posts and comments from fans, had been deleted.
    A representative for the British singer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
    Sheeran was active on Instagram on Tuesday, posting a photo of a cat and a picture from the set of "Game of Thrones." On Sunday he also posted photos and a video of his "Game of Thrones" cameo.
    Sheeran´s scene on Sunday´s HBO medieval fantasy series, in which he plays a singing soldier who encounters character Arya Stark, garnered mixed reception from avid "Game of Thrones" fans.
