This Dodge Viper Set The Half-Mile RWD World Record At 237 MPH

The Hennessey Venom GT is perhaps the fastest production car in the world right now. The amount of satisfaction you get from watching this car hit 270 MPH on a track is amazing. Here's a well put together video of the Hennessey doing just that:

But, cars like the Venom GT have been built to achieve such speeds. While it is fun to watch them do what they were built for, it's not as fun as when you see a car that's not built for such speeds doing what some would call - the impossible.

That brings us to the 'Car of the Hour' the Dodge Viper. Yes, the Viper is a sports car too, but with a starting price of around $92,000, it's one of the cheapest options that can cross the 200 MPH barrier. This fact only makes the Viper stand out so much more, doesn't it?

There's a lot of effort that goes into the production of a car like the Dodge Viper, but when someone has the guts to ignore everything the manufacturer says and use the car for something that it's not meant for, you have no choice but to stand up and applaud the effort. Before talking about the world record, here's a look at how Viper's are built:

Now, on to business. The Dodge Viper we are talking about today broke the world record for the fastest RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) car over a half-mile. The Viper, a car with a top speed of 202 MPH managed to reach a speed 237 MPH within a half-mile. Remember, only RWD cars were considered for this record.

When you think about it, the fastest car over a half-mile is the Nissan GT-R with 3,000 hp that hit 255 MPH. That's just 18 MPH between the two. Check out the Nissan's world record setting attempt:

As far as the Viper is concerned, even though the world record attempt hasn't been captured on video, you can see it crossing the 220 MPH regularly in the video below. Hats off to the driver for having the guts to take the Viper to speeds it wasn't meant to achieve. Have a look at the car and what it can do:
