Kurt Cobain's Paintings Reveal A Side To The Musician You'll Have To See To Believe

Kurt Cobain was a rockstar! Everything he did, spoke, or sang became an international rage. Right from his cover of ‘The Man Who Sold The World' to the iconic ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit'—everything the Nirvana frontman did became the most important thing in the universe. But, most of all, he left an indelible mark on the music industry.

What you probably didn't know was that Cobain also meant to leave an indelible part of his soul in his artworks. Yes, Kurt Cobain, the lead vocalist and guitar player for Nirvana, was also a painter. And his visual artwork had been showcased at a special exhibition during the recently concluded Seattle Art Fair.

The exhibition, which had been organized by the United Talent Agency (UTA) between 03rd to 06th August, 2017, saw a host of Cobain's paintings grace the halls and walls of the Seattle Art Fair. The musician's paintings were rich in skeletal figures and dark iconography that tended to coincide with his musical references, strongly; depicting that, for Cobain, the two were interchangeable means; like two sides of the same coin.

The Seattle Art Fair also showcased a collection of the artist's notebooks that have been kept under wraps ever since his death, back in 1994. Out of the series of artworks by Cobain, one particularly stands out as fans recognized this one to be the same as the artwork of the album, ‘Insecticide'. The painting remains untitled, however. None of these artworks were put on sale, with one of the UTA representatives, Joshua Roth, even reasoning that, “It's too hard to put a price on them.” He added that the paintings had remained special to the family.

The idea behind showcasing Cobain's paintings was, as the sources at UTA told the NY Times, so that “a new light will be shed on his oeuvre, even to fans well-versed in his work.” This was also one of the reasons why they chose Seattle as the place for the showcase as it remains the birthplace of Cobain's tryst with music. “He was born near there, he passed away there, and he created the soundtrack for a counterculture there,” said Roth. The team, under Roth is planning to “create a touring exhibition that really tells the story of who Kurt was through artwork, personal artifacts and memorabilia, sort of like what the Rolling Stones did in London.”

Yet another team at UTA is also working to develop a feature-length motion picture about Kurt Cobain's life. Roth further detailed that the artwork could, in fact, become part of a, “touring exhibition” and that there are “dozens” of artworks in the estate including paintings, drawings, and sculptures.
