KARACHI: Waste of 700,000 animals sacrificed on the first day of Eid-ul-Azha has been disposed of in Karachi, Geo News reported on Sunday.

Sources said the responsibility of collecting and disposing animal waste rests with the respective district municipal corporations whereas the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation only provides overall assistance. 

In some areas, the public disposal of offals by residents, coupled with standing rainwater from a few days ago, has made matters worse.

Meanwhile, in other areas of Sindh as well as rest of the country, the collection of animal waste continues albeit not to the satisfaction of residents, according to Geo News. In most areas, it is the task of municipal authorities to collect animal waste and dispose of it in designated spaces where ditches are dug up for disposal.

The holidays of sanitation staff are also cancelled over Eid so they work overtime to ensure cleanliness.

The sacrifice of animals continues over the three days of Eid, however, the highest number of animals are sacrificed on the first day of the festival.

On Saturday, after offering Eid prayers, Muslims across Pakistan who could afford it sacrificed domestic animals as a symbol of Hazrat Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his only son.

Eid-ul-Azha marks the end of an annual Hajj, or pilgrimage to Makkah, which is one of the five pillars of Islam, and should be undertaken by every Muslim who can afford to do so.Islam, and should be undertaken by every Muslim who can afford to do so.

In Islamabad, the main Eid congregation was held at Faisal Mosque where ministers, politicians and parliamentarians, Muslim diplomats and notables joined thousands of residents in prayers.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi offered Eid prayers at PM House mosque, while President Mamnoon Hussain attended prayers at the Karachi state guest house.

Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif offered prayers at Raiwind, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, former president Asif Ali Zardari in Nawabshah, PTI Chairman Imran Khan in Nathiagali, Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly Khursheed Shah in Sukkur and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Siraj-ul-Haq in Lahore.
