Blast From The Past: How Virender Sehwag Got Sachin Tendulkar Dismissed

Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar were arguably one of the most destructive opening pairs in their era. The two batting maestros opened for India in 93 innings between 2002 to 2012.

Together, Sehwag and Tendulkar have also been involved in 12 hundred-run partnerships and 18 fifty-run stands. With a highest opening stand of 182 runs in ODI cricket, the two players complemented each other with their distinctive batting styles.

While Sehwag trusted his instincts more than technique, Tendulkar was just marvellous at doing what he does best. Though the Master Blaster didn't need anyone else's advice on how to bat, a mid-game battle with former England spinner Ashley Giles got Tendulkar worked up.

During a Test match between India and England, Tendulkar and Sehwag were facing the spin bowling attack of Giles. While Sehwag was able to use his feet to counter the variations of the England spinner, Tendulkar was mostly padding.

After a few overs, Sehwag went up to Tendulkar and advised him to step out and charge against the England spinner to play his shots. Since, there was no turn on offer from the pitch; the advice seemed to make sense. But, what actually unfolded later is something Sehwag would really want to forget.

Convinced by Sehwag, Tendulkar decided to step out of his crease against Giles only to get stumped. Unfortunately for Tendulkar, the only ball that turned was the one on which he stepped out of the crease.

β€œI was stepping out and easily hitting my shots. He was mostly padding. I said there is no spin, you can charge and play. It took me 2-3 overs to convince him. The only ball that turned was the one on which he stepped out of crease and was stumped," Sehwag recalled the incident during a session at 'Agenda Aaj Tak'.

"I did not go back to dressing room that day at tea break. I sat in umpires’ room. I was called in later. Tendulkar said only once in my career I have got out stumped in Test cricket and that’s because of you,” Viru revealed.
