Apple may have been late to join the OLED bandwagon, however, it seems like the company has adopted an OLED panel that even Samsung doesn't use for their smartphones. Samsung and LG have both been using OLED screens for their smartphones and Apple has joined the same race with the iPhone X.
Tom's Guide conducted a display test and put the iPhone X's against the Galaxy Note 8 and Pixel 2 XL to determine which one was the best.
It Has The Brightest Display© Tom's Guide
Brightness is one of the criteria to judge a display's performance and the case remains the same for OLED panels. Tom's Guide found that the iPhone X's display is far brighter than the competition. It recorded 574 nits in the test while Samsung could only record 408 nits. Google's latest offering, the Pixel 2 XL, recorded 438 nits but it was still not enough to beat the iPhone X.
Colour Accuracy and Saturation© Tom's Guide
The iPhone X also performed better than the Note 8 and Pixel when to came to colour balance and representation. Tom's Guide compared the three phones to find the Note 8 produced oversaturated hues and the Pixel 2 XL was closer to the iPhone X in terms of accuracy. The experts went on to add, “Ultimately, the iPhone X took the victory here, as it better handled the contrast between the sky and water. The increased brightness also helped illuminate more of the shadowy details in the scene, like the braids in Wonder Woman's hair”.
Better White BalanceThe experts switched off True Tone to find out which smartphone had better warmth on their screens. It was concluded that the iPhone X had a perfect medium between the warmth of the Pixel 2 XL and the cool colours of the Note 8. They further noticed that when True Tone was switched on, the colour accuracy was even more accurate.
Better Viewing Angles© Tom's Guide
Viewing a smartphone's display from a certain angle is always a task that smartphone fails to achieve. A smartphone has to maintain its brightness so that it can be easily viewed when the phone is tilted from left to right or top to bottom. The iPhone X does manage to hold it together even though the display does tend to get cooler when tilted. The experts found that the iPhone X wasn't as bad to the Note 8 or the Pixel 2 XL and managed to stay on top.
Conclusion:© Apple
Towards the end of their tests, Tom's Guide had this to say:
“It took Apple an awfully long time to jump on the OLED bandwagon, but as usual, the company knocked it out of the park when it finally made the move. But is it better than the competition? The answer to that question will depend on what you like to see.
If it's realism you want, the iPhone X's supremely bright screen and exquisite white balance provide a sense of color accuracy you simply don't get from other handsets. But if you want hues that truly pop, the Galaxy Note 8 is still king.”
