Apple Is Making It Harder To Buy The iPhone X in India

Getting your hands on the iPhone X isn't easy and retailers are overcharging customers just because of the lack of availability of the phone. Some retailers are charging INR 1,20,000 for the INR 89,000 model simply because of the lack of stock.

Apple has now made it even harder for customers to get their hands on the iPhone X as the company has now slashed retail margins on the iPhone X. Apple has slashed nearly 30% of the margin for large chain retailers and even small-scale retailers. Retailers are complaining that Apple does not want their retail partners to benefit while the company enjoys even larger profits.

Bengaluru based Sangeetha Mobiles have stopped selling the iPhone X altogether and some analysts believe the price cut is due to Apple importing larger quantities of the iPhone X. It has been reported that Apple is bringing larger shipments to India than most Asian countries.

“Apple has cut margins on the iPhone X from 6.5% to 4.5% for large retailers like us, and if a customer pays by card, which is usually the case, the margin reduces to almost 1.5-2%," said Subhash Chandra, managing director at Sangeetha Mobiles, which has 400 stores across the country.

"Apple gives the least margins... How on earth do they expect the retailer to work for them for free -- our overheads are anywhere around 10%," Chandra explained.

To put things in a broader perspective, other brands such as Samsung or Xiaomi offer more than double the margin as compared to Apple. Most companies tend to offer a 12-15% margin to retailers and companies like OPPO and Vivo offer higher margins than usual.

Offline retailers are also complaining about online retailers offering cashbacks and hefty discounts on iPhones that cannot be matched. In addition, some handset retailers have only received 4000 units of the iPhone X since launch which is far less than what Apple had promised. In order to compensate for the lower margins, offline retailers need higher quantities of the iPhone X in order to level the playing field.

So, if you are planning on buying the iPhone X anytime soon, we suggest you double check with your retailer about availability.
