Chinese Police Are Donning 'Smart Glasses' With Facial-Recognition To Catch Criminals In A Crowd

You can either hate Chinese products or love them, but you have to agree with the fact that the Chinese are always one step ahead when it comes to technology. Even the Chinese Police stay up-to-date with whatever new gadget is being developed and the latest addition to their already long-list of insane technology is a pair of smart glasses.

And by smart glasses, we do not mean any smart glasses. The glasses that we are talking about today come with facial recognition technology that can help the police scan and identify criminals from among a crowd.

Now, this may sound like a nightmare to some as it could also appear as an invasion of privacy, but to be honest, they are fascinating.

Within a matter of seconds, these glasses identify the person at whom the wearer is looking. The attached camera takes precise measurements of the width and depth of a face and compares it to a central database of wanted criminals.

Currently, police with these smart glasses have been deployed at the four entrances to the Zhengzhou East Railway Station in Henan since the Spring Festival travel rush began.

And already they have helped capture seven people wanted in connection with major cases, and 26 others traveling under a false or assumed identity. The authorities feel that these glasses are of utmost importance especially since the Lunar New Year is just around the corner and is one of the busiest travel periods in China.

While all this sounds great and will prove to be an asset for the Chinese Police, we can't help but think about this technology can easily be misused. Especially in a country like China which is already known for its unusual ways of surveillance of its citizens.
