Austrian Snowboarder Breaks His Neck Mid-Race But Miraculously Gets Up & Finishes It

The organizers of the ongoing 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games should probably consider changing the name to 'World's Most Dangerous Games Are Played Here'; because that's probably the best explanation one can come up with for the event.

If the games weren't tough already, the life threatening tracks further add to the danger for the players, making it unbelievable and tough for the people watching it on TV. And 30-year-old Austrian Snowboarder Markus Schairer can probably testify the same or agree with us.

Markus was eyeing for the semi-finals of the Snowcross Board, but his Olympic journey has now come to a tragic halt, after a horrific crash broke his neck.

During the last jump, Markus lost control and landed on his back and neck. He was immediately rushed to the hospital after the race when he complained of severe chest pain. Shortly after, it was revealed by the Austrian Olympic Committee that Markus has fractured the fifth cervical vertebra in his neck. The good news is that there are no signs of any neurological impairment or long-term damage.

Just by looking at the video, one can feel how deadly the impact was and how difficult it would have been for him to bear so much pain. Markus has returned to Austria to receive further treatment.

It is not miraculous enough that he survived, but it is also unbelievable how he got up on his feet, finished the race and even congratulated his fellow competitors. If this is not the mark of a true fighter and pure sportsmanship, we wonder what else does. Markus deserves all the respect in the world and we hope for his speedy recovery.
