There's A Swanky Lounge At New Delhi Railway Station And It's Every Passenger's Wet Dream

Anybody who's taken a train from New Delhi, or any other Indian railway station for that matter, knows the pain of battling it out in the crowd. At any given point in the day, you're sure to find to find a sea of humanity shuffling its way to nowhere. As if the torture of dragging your suitcase across platforms, steering through confused travellers wasn't enough, you find your train is 5 hours late. By now you probably have a phobia of railway stations. You are the anti-thesis of Geet from 'Jab We Met'.

What if we told you there is a swanky (as compared to the rest of the railway station) waiting lounge at the New Delhi Railway Station and it's been there for the past 6 years! The lounge has it all – deluxe suites for you to take a good nap in case your train is running way behind schedule, reclining chairs, free wi-fi, and a fine dining space.

The executive lounge is run by IRCTC and you need to pay Rs 165 for using it for 2 hours. Considering the mayhem outside, it's a pretty good deal we think. Of course, the deluxe suites come at an additional cost. Although bookings for the lounge are done online mostly, IRCTC offers a walk-in option too.

“Access to these lounges is controlled by a smart card, which can track how many hours you have been inside. People usually use the suites when they have a train to catch the same day,” an IRCTC official said.

The lounge is part of a pilot programme to offer lounge facilities on railway stations across the country and, true to the plan, more lounges are expected to open up in the next couple of years. Delhi, Jaipur and Agra are on the list of preferred cities where the railway lounges would be introduced.

While we desperately wish more lounges crop up at railway stations, we can't wait to try the one at New Delhi Railway Station! Have you seen it?!
