Attempting To Make A World Record, A Nepali Sherpa Is Scaling Mt Everest For The 22nd Time

While almost every one of us would probably can't even imagine climbing Mount Everest even once – and not even thought about it enough to care – there is a guy who is here to suddenly make us feel bad about it.

Kami Rita Sherpa has successfully completed climbing the highest peak not just once or twice, but 21 freaking times, and he's still not satisfied. One time would be the biggest achievement for us, but this guy is going for the win, and has already set off for the 22nd time to make the world record.

He already held the current record – which is of 21 successful ascents – but he shared it with two other Nepali climbers. As I said before, he's going for the win. Isn't this exciting?

Since both of his fellow countrymen have retired, this is the best chance he has to claim the title of the world's most experienced Everest climber. I kinda feel bad for the other two guys, though.

Before setting off for the 22nd time, the 48-year-old told AFP, “I did not start climbing to set a world record. But in the course of my work in the guiding industry this is going to be my 22nd ascent. It wasn't for any competition.”

So humble, that's so nice.

He first climbed Everest in 1994, where he was one of just 49 climbers to reach the peak. His last record-making ascent was last year in May.

For most of his career, he has worked as a Sherpa guide for US-based Alpine Ascents. So basically, he went from a guide to a world-record holder. Now, that's commendable.

He added, “I am not extremely happy, excited or very sad no matter how many times I climb. There are many Sherpas who have held world records, I am just starting.”

Before heading for the top of the world, he added, “My life is just normal.”

Well, agree to disagree on that, I guess. I don't know him, but I'm so invested now, I want him to successfully complete the 22nd time, that would be so awesome.

We're all rooting for you, man!
