In a tournament that has been full of exciting contests and shocking results, the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia saw yet another football heavyweight bowing out of the tournament. After the Lionel Messi-led Argentina were knocked out by France following their thrilling 4-3 win, 2016 Euro champions Portugal were beaten 2-1 by an in-form Uruguay in the Round of 16.

In a matter of just a few hours, football giants Argentina and Portugal were out of the coveted tournament. And, if that left the fans disappointed, the fact that Messi and Ronaldo - arguably two of the greatest footballers on the planet - were also sent packing, probably robbed the tournament of what many expected to be a great individual battle on the biggest stage.

While fans mourned their early exit from the big stage, others lauded their respective opponents for a gritty showing. But then, there were a few who somehow thought Ronaldo's girlfriend was responsible for Portugal's ouster from the World Cup.

Ahead of Portugal's Round of 16 clash against Uruguay, Georgina Rodriguez took to Instagram and wished good luck to Ronaldo and his team. But, after Portugal's defeat on 30th June, her post gave arsenal to many football fans who used it to throw insults at her.

While Uruguay fans used the opportunity to throw their national team's triumph in her face by pasting their country's flag and commenting on her post, the Iranian fans - who were left heartbroken after Portugal knocked Iran out of the World Cup - also took revenge by rubbing salt on Georgina and her beau's wounds.

If that wasn't enough, there were a few who even blamed her presence inside the stadium for Portugal's loss. "Your greatest mistake was to visit matches. You're not a lucky one, unfortunately," a comment read. Georgina was seen cheering for Ronaldo and Portugal from the stands inside the Fisht stadium in Sochi during their tie against Uruguay.

Well, this isn't the first time when the better half of a sportsperson has been blamed for their partner's dismal show on the field.
