With Bullet Baba Whisky Devi Temple andamp An Aeroplane Gurudwara Beliefs In India Are Stranger Than Fiction

The amount of gods and goddesses that reside in the hearts of Indians is probably more than the population of a European country, and why not? We are a melting pot of culture and the more, the merrier. Superstitions and beliefs drive the force for people and while the answer to ‘Mandir wahin banayega’ is unknown, here are few temples that highlight the level of creativity we Indians have in ourselves:

Whiskey Devi Temple

If you happen to stand outside Ujjain’s ‘Kal Bhairav’ Temple, you’d see people carrying bottles of whiskey inside. It is not only offered there but also given out as ‘prasad’ for the deities. Liquor is a part of the panchamakara ritual that consisted of: madya (alcohol), maansa (meat),matsya (fish), mudra ( parched grain) and maithuna (sexual intercourse).

People believe that ‘Bhairav’ swallows every drop that is offered to him.

Bullet Baba Temple

People literally worship a 350cc Royal Enfield! Sounds like a biker's dream? Om Banna is the god of this temple who, as per legends, dies years ago while riding his bike. When people took his bike to the police, it magically kept relocating itself and since then a ‘mandir’ was dedicated to him. People offer ‘beer’ here.

Modi Temple

You won’t be surprised, right? Namo is the catchphrase of the entire nation and a man with a stellar following is no less than a God for many people in this country. The temple is located in Gujarat and people worship him just like any other god.

Aeroplane Gurudwara

Punjabis and their love for ‘Canada’ and a green card is not an alien concept for us. There’s a gurudwara near Jalandhar city where people go when they apply for visas! Not kidding bro.

Karni Mata Temple

This temple is also situated in Rajasthan and is famous as the ‘rat’ temple. People might get pest control done for the rodents but here, everything is infested with rats, and devotees pray to them. If you kill a rat here, you have to replace it with a rat made out of pure gold, else you are cursed. That’s what the devotees believe.

Legends and beliefs are sometimes stranger than fiction.
