Lionel Messis Heroics In Vain As Real Madrid Beat Barcelona To Their 33rd La Liga Title

The intense rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona witnessed yet another epic showdown on Sunday with the coveted La Liga title on the line. On the final day of the season, Barcelona needed a win against Eibar, and then needed Real Madrid to lose their game against Malaga to clinch this year's title.

However, despite coming back from 0-2 deficit to beat Eibar 4-2, the Catalan giants couldn't stop Los Blancos from securing their 33rd Spanish league title - their first since 2011-12 - following a 2-0 win over Malaga.

Takashi Inui's brace shocked Barca early in the game and allowed Eibar to earn a shock lead at Camp Nou. With Luis Enrique's farewell game in jeopardy, the hosts needed to come back strong and that's exactly what they did following an own goal from David Junca in the 63rd minute.

With Barcelona trailing 1-2, a blatant dive from Jordi Alba fooled referee Alejandro Hernandez into awarding a penalty. In what looked like a crucial opportunity, soon turned into a disappointment with Lionel Messi misfiring with his spot-kick - his first penalty miss in 10 games (all competitions) this season.

But, three minutes later, Luis Suarez, who was having a stinker of a game, scored the equaliser poking home from a few yards out after Paco Alcacer had flicked the ball towards the back post.

Soon, Enrique's men were handed another opportunity, this time, to take the lead after Ander Capa fouled Neymar to earn a red card while giving away a penalty to his opponents. Messi then atoned for his spot-kick failure earlier in the game by converting another to give Barcelona a 3-2 lead.

However, Messi had saved his best for the last. Showcasing his brilliant dribbling skills, the Barcelona talisman began his run from the halfway line to eventually go past six Eibar players before slotting it past Yoel in the back of the net.

It was Messi's 37th league goal this season which also earned him his 4th Pichichi - one better than Cristiano Ronaldo. It was also the first time Messi has won the Spanish golden boot in four seasons. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for to stop rivals Real Madrid from bagging the title this season.

I do wonder when Barcelona players will stop pathetically diving for penalties. Ridiculous how they get away with it.

Eibar winning 2-1 against Barcelona. Alba with a dive. Wins a penalty. Messi takes it and misses. This is great stuff.

Real Madrid have been in 3 of the last 4 Champions League finals and yet, nobody mentions them in the same breath as Pep's Barcelona.

"Barcelona fans mock Ronaldo for scoring penalties. Real Madrid fans mock Messi for missing them."

Congratulations to Real Madrid on winning the 2016-17 La Liga.
